Off leash freedom = calm happy dog 😃
Dogs should never live their entire lives attached to a leash. It causes frustration. It would for you too! My experience has shown me that the more freedom I allow my dogs, the more they want to be near me. They’re more fulfilled, hence more calm and better behaved.
Puppies. Sponges. He’s proud he can do a down with only a verbal cue now. “I get it!! I get it!!” Puppies/dogs simply need to know what we WANT from them. Once they know, they want to be successful at doing it. Teach!
A simple impulse control exercise video using food. You get your reinforcement by staying on the bed-not by grabbing the falling food.
Spring break means lots of boarders! Love how 730am they have a moment to reflect on the morning then everyone just runs to start playtime. It’s like they all decide in a second let’s go!!!!
At lesson today- When you need a drink, you take it where you can.
Dabby will put up a fight and submissive pee to go into her crate. We moved the crate into the center of the room to make it look different to her. Then I lowered the back wall down and put her bed and blankets over the fallen wall. This allowed a tunnel for us to allow her to go through. We made it FUN and she got cheese for going through. Who doesn’t love cheese?!! Then we loosely named it “kennel” and put the back wall back up, then repetition repetition repetition. I’ll see how this is looking by our lesson next week.
Mabel Jane was learning how to “leave it” today. God I love her faces. She was quite an intimidating puppy when I first met her. Now we are bffs. I love being a part of her journey. So much to learn yet but she’s right on schedule. And she’s having FUN learning!!
Our small group obedience class. Jax and Wilett showing off some skillzzz at our last class
What you are watching is electric collar conditioning. Yes-that Dog is feeling a very low level stimulation every time we say come. Does she look upset? Hell no! When used properly, tools like an e collar are nothing but helpful. When people judge them it’s simply because they don’t understand them. Ignorance. In no time she will be able to be trusted off leash. Freedom is the gift your dog receives. She’s having a blast learning!!
This is the German Indian dog, Misiu, that I posted about yesterday. Here is a video from that lesson focusing on heeling. I brought a second dog for distraction. He staying in place:
Notice the handler providing reinforcement to Misiu with food to tell him he’s succeeding. At this point in lessons, we are also using e collar sparingly to “tap tap” at a low level if he sways from heel position.
I love Misiu’s focus on his human. Having that engagement starts with simply having a close relationship with your dogs, then becoming a consistent coach for them. It’s a beautiful thing to witness a dog looking at their humans for direction and the humans clearly providing it.
Fulfilling your dogs’ needs comes in many forms. Today I took my pup Keiko to do Lure Coursing up near Kenosha. She ran with friends who are veterans at it. She had SO MUCH FUN once she got the hang of it. If your dog loves to chase, TRY THIS! There’s a place in Oswego named Leash on Life we are going to try next time.
A very special client just sent me this video. She used to have a difficult time getting her dogs, Tank and Bella, to stop playing and come back to her when she asked. They paid no attention to her. Why? They had zero motivation to go to her! Look how she's made herself valuable!! Good training should look like disciplined play. I LOVE these dogs and I love my client for utilizing training as a way of life.
A little playtime before class starts :)
When a client listens to you and starts making brushing and grooming enjoyable from day one: you get a dog who enjoys the process. Bailey loves brushing time. 😍
A little training session with Margot just now. 😍
