The Indoor Pet Chicken

The Indoor Pet Chicken Yes! You can keep a pet chicken in your home! The Serama makes a beautiful pet and companion, both indoors and outdoors. Let's keep this page fun!!

This page is for the indoor pet chicken enthusiast. Although Seramas are discussed as a good breed for indoor taming, all breeds of chicken may be discussed on this page. No drama please. Serama cockerels are a naturally friendly breed and can be easily hand tamed and handled
The Serama makes a beautiful pet and companion, both indoors and outdoors. Seramas are the smaller breed of chicken in the

world. Their small size requires very little space and a pair or trio can comfortably be caged in a 24 inch by 18 inch enclosure. Seramas should only be let out of their cages when they are safe from predators such as dogs, cats, and birds of prey. They make great companions while gardening and enjoying the mornings/evenings on the porch. Their regal appearance and natural beauty adds to the splendor of any garden or home. They are inexpensive to rear as each Serama consumes only about one pound of feed per month. Although the Serama rooster does crow, the crow of the Serama is much less loud than that of a standard Rooster. Some say they would rather listen to the calming crow of a Serama vs. the loud screech of a parrot. Promoting the Serama as a mainstream cage pet will reduce the demand for wild caught birds, such as parrots. Serma eat regular chicken feed. They can also be given veggies, and a little grain for treats. Seramas are not winter hardy and should be indoors in winter. Even though the Serama can be kept indoors year round as a cage bird pet, please be aware of your local ordinances, as many municipalities do not allow 'poultry'.
