His first photo is indeed startling, but rest assured, this little fellow is absolutely thriving today! 💖

Bumper was merely 4 weeks old when he kindly introduced himself to a local family in their garage. They brought him to our Green Bay Campus, where his outgoing confidence impressed everyone. But, his large bulging eyes (most likely a condition he was born with) had our veterinary team concerned. He had damaged corneas and severe glaucoma in both eyes that would soon lead to total blindness. After extensive consultation with veterinary ophthalmologists, his eyes were surgically removed to prevent more significant problems. After two weeks of recovery in foster care, Bumper found his way to the heart of a family who are just as impressed as we are with his resilient spirit:

“This boy has been the perfect addition to our family - we have a nearly 1-year-old two-legged cat who needed a playmate, and Bumper has taken on that role well. I am always telling people that Bumper isn't blind; he just doesn't have eyes. If you watch him navigate his world, you would be surprised that he can't see. He runs, plays, jumps, climbs and wrestles like any other kitten his age. One of his favorite napping spots is on the top level of our seven-foot-tall cat tree. He gets up and down there all by himself.

And as his foster mom told me, once he has mapped out a room, he KNOWS it. He loves to wrestle with his sister, Kiwi, and play with toys endlessly. Loves to jump on the dogs and annoy them…when he finally runs out of energy, he loves to snuggle with his people for a nap.

…people view animals like Bumper as disabled, but not having eyes does not slow this boy down one bit…he doesn't have time to feel sorry for himself…he's got too much playing and wrestling and exploring to do.”

Congratulations, Bumper! We could not be prouder of you and wish you all the love and adventure your little heart desires! 🎉

04/17/2024

Octavia was 5 months old when she nervously arrived at our Kenosha Campus riddled with burrs and swollen red eyes. A bit of sweet talking and a few treats put her at ease, and by the time her exam was through, she was already earning her reputation as an outgoing and sociable pup. Our vet staff knew she would need surgery to correct the problem with her eyes, so we transferred her to our Ozaukee Campus, where we had a bit more room for this big girl to recover after this delicate surgery. Two surgeries later, Octavia was ready to find a new home. We soon found a loving family who could manage a potential reoccurrence of her eye issues – and just can’t imagine life without her:

“She immediately merged well with our family. We all say, “Octavia, you have always been a part of our family! We just hadn’t found you yet! We had two cats and another dog when Octavia came in—and our other dog was still grieving the loss of his dog companion a few months ago…Octavia immediately took to grooming our other dog’s ears and took care of him, and for the cats she has taken their lead and mostly just laid down next to them at most and made sure they feel safe. She likes to sit for long hours in the yard…We have an appointment with ophthalmology at UW Veterinary to look at her eye in May since the issue has been recurring. We keep her away from dog parks to avoid any possible infection at this time—but luckily, she hasn’t had a problem with itching the eye at all.” 💖

We are so happy to know Octavia has found a family who can return all the love she has to give, and we wish you all the best in the years ahead! 🎉

This mama cat and her kittens need your support! Mallory was found by a kind stranger who instantly knew she needed help. With a brood of newborn kittens and a severe open wound on her front leg, she was fighting for all of their lives. Mallory was brought to WHS, where X-rays confirmed that her leg was fractured so extensively that it would never heal properly. With amputation as the best hope for Mallory’s future, our vet team quickly formulated care plans to see them all through to healthier days. Due to the severity of her injury, the surgery could not wait. During the procedure, staff carefully monitored and hand-fed Mallory's kittens, who were all thrilled to be reunited with mom once she was feeling better.

Since her successful amputation surgery, Mallory and her babies have been recuperating with one of our loving foster families. Despite recovering from a major surgery that has her relearning how to navigate the world, her supreme confidence and natural instincts have impressed everyone who has had the pleasure of watching this doting and confident mama shine. Her kittens are thriving, and so is she, thanks to an incredible care team behind her – and the support that makes it possible.

Will you make a gift today to help Mallory and her kittens on their road to recovery? Donations are currently being MATCHED, so your $5, $10, or even $25 gift will have twice the impact for Mallory – and all the animals in our care.

Splash was rescued and brought to our Ozaukee Campus after being found shivering in a local car wash. He was wet, cold, and partially dyed pink from a sea of soap upon his arrival. Worst of all, the sensitive skin on all four of his tiny paws was bleeding, infected, and terribly inflamed.
Our veterinary team removed the most severely damaged tissue, and spent the next month treating, bandaging, and monitoring his paws as a more confident and affectionate personality began to shine.

Finally healthy enough for adoption and ready for some fearless pouncing, Splash was adopted mere hours after he was made available for adoption! He’s been warm and cozy ever since 💖

04/08/2024

When Bestie's family reached out to share how well he was doing and the remarkable difference he was making in their home, we could not keep it to ourselves:

“I adopted Bestie last week Tuesday to be a companion to my rescue Tiny Toni. We lost the other two dogs we had with her the last six years since we rescued her. She wasn’t eating or really responding to anything the last three weeks. She began eating and acting herself the same day he came to stay with us. He loves being by her and I can’t tell you how happy we are she is back to her normal self. His name is now Prince Charming, since he saved her. I call him My Prince. Just wanted to let you know he is doing great with all his training and a wonderful addition to our family.“

We are so happy that Tiny Toni has found her Prince, and he has landed such a loving family. ♥ Congratulations to you all!

Lexie was found running loose, unable to use her back leg, and her entire body trembled in fear as rescuers brought the 15lb dog to WHS. Her left rear leg was scraped and swollen, and X-rays revealed a fragment of her bone dislodged near her knee. We gave her pain medication, antibiotics, and put her on strict bed rest, but the leg proved to be beyond repair – Lexie needed amputation surgery. We can’t imagine how much pain she must have been in before, but today, Lexie is thriving on three legs and is completely adored by her dad – all thanks to supporters like you.

Over the course of a year, thousands of animals come through our doors. They require varying degrees of treatment, from simple vaccinations to life-saving surgery and extended periods of therapy. As animals heal and await adoption, we’ll meet whatever other needs they have, too. But as you can imagine, the expenses really add up! We're hoping that you'll consider making a donation to offset our medical costs for animals like Lexie.

🎉Exciting news! Donations are now being matched through April! Every dollar you give to the Wisconsin Humane Society is being matched right now by some incredible friends, up to $65,000. It's the perfect time to make twice the impact for animals in need ❤

We often get asked: which dogs have been at the shelter the longest?
Meet Landon, the sweetest pup looking for a loving home! This handsome 5-year-old has been at WHS for months. Since his arrival, he has won the hearts of our staff and volunteers, and was even nominated as the one and only “Employee of the Month” at our Ozaukee Campus due to his outstanding professionalism. 💕

We know Landon’s match is out there, and we need your help to find them! He is not without his quirks, as he has shown behaviors associated with separation anxiety, and while he adores people, Landon cannot share a home with cats, dogs, or children under the age of 13. Although he takes his time warming up to new people, once you’ve earned his trust, you’ll have the most loyal best friend! Landon is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, plus his adopter will receive a certificate for a free vet exam, a free starter bag of food, 30 days of pet insurance, a free training session from GoodPup, and even more perks! Plus, you get to name your own adoption fee for Landon!

Can’t adopt right now? Landon would also be thrilled to find a foster home where he can decompress and get a break from the shelter environment. If you’re not already an approved foster parent, you can start your foster journey today at www.wihumane.org/foster/apply 👈.

Can you open your heart and home to Landon? To find out if you’re a good match, come meet him during adoption hours at the Ozaukee Campus! https://www.wihumane.org/adopt/animal?id=50163229

Named Flight Attendant when she arrived as a stray to our Ozaukee Campus, this lovely lady has settled beautifully into her new life and has a new name to go with it. We received this update from her adopter, Debra Jo, and it's simply too good to keep to ourselves:

“Her forever name is Stella Blue. (I'm a Grateful Dead fan.) She settled into life with me quickly and appears quite happy. As you can see from the picture of her on my lap, she is Queen of our home. My previous cats were both elderly, so I had to adjust to a few things- she is spry, active, and curious. I am now used to finding my pens and pencils on the floor- because they are perfect for batting around! Houseplants no longer live on windowsills, and the toilet seat is always left down. She loves sitting on my lap in the early mornings while I read. She enjoys 'hunting' her toys, especially if I'm dragging or swinging them for her. Watching her leap and play is better than television!”

Congratulations to Stella Blue and Debra Jo on all the love you have found and all the fun that lies ahead!

Zeus already had a well-earned reputation as a gentle giant and all-around Good Boy© with our staff and volunteers when a family planned to celebrate their daughter's 10th birthday at WHS. The party included games, pizza, birthday cake, and a tour of the shelter. When the family mentioned loving big dogs, our staff knew they had to meet Zeus.

We can’t be certain who was struck first, but it's safe to say there was love at first sight. 😍 Zeus went home with them that afternoon and has been thriving ever since.
We are so happy to know that he and the birthday girl share a “best day ever” and wish them years of happy memories to come!

This allows the animals to search for an adopter from the comfort of their current home, plus it leaves more room at the shelter for animals who don't already have an advocate. 💙
All listings contain information from the current owners whom you’ll work with directly to find out more about the animal’s personality, ideal living situation, and to coordinate adoption.
