On , we're sharing a few important reminders on the importance of microchips - such as:

➡ 1 in 3 family pets will get lost
➡ Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners and microchipped cats are more than 20 times as likely to be returned to their owners

And remember - while microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen…a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate.

🌼 Our next staff highlight:

🩺 Dr. Cassie Ayers Panik has been practicing veterinary medicine in the Upper Peninsula since graduating in 2009 from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She is originally from the Ann Arbor area, but moved north when job opportunities for her and her husband were available.

⚕️As a veterinarian, Dr. Cassie knows the importance of and seeks to strengthen the bond between person and their pet with each visit. She enjoys meeting each new addition, whether young or older, and loves to see her patients grow and mature each year. Practicing in the area for the last 15 years, she has seen patients as puppies and kittens into their senior years! She is a very skilled surgeon, performing many soft tissue and abdominal procedures over the years. 🐈

👦👧🧒 Besides being a veterinarian, she is a wife to Michael and mom to three great kids who bring fun, love and challenges to each day.

🐕 Rusty Redford, a Chow Chow, fits in perfectly with their family, watching over them and being adored by all.

🌺 In the summer, you can find her in her flower and vegetable gardens, riding her horse, Sam, hiking, or enjoying the sun anywhere it is shining.🐴

🎿 In the winter, she enjoys cross-country skiing and snowmobiling with family and friends, or just curling up with a good book.

🇺🇸 The clinic could not operate without Dr. Cassie‘s hard work and dedication. She has covered two military deployments and several other missions while Dr. Jill is away on military duty. She is currently working extra days while Dr. Jill serves in an Army Civil Affairs mobilization in East Africa. 🇩🇯

🐾 Thank you, Dr. Cassie for your dedication to not only our clinic and staff, but our community, our clients and their beloved pets. We appreciate you! ❤️

Luca Bonacci
September 2008-May 21, 2024

On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, Molly and Joe said goodbye to their tender-hearted pit bull, Luca.

When Luca was about 3-4 weeks old, she was dropped off on the doorstep of the veterinary clinic where Molly worked at in Flint, MI. She was a tiny, injured puppy in a Tupperware container who ended up spending the next nearly 16 years with her family.

Luca was a remarkable girl who absolutely loved every single person or animal she met. She happily welcomed every new dog, cat, chicken, or duck that came into their home. With enduring patience, Luca was happy to let any animal friend invade her space. She was even a regular “chair” for her pit bull sister, Ice, who loved to sit right on top of her head.

Because of her patient personality and kind disposition, when adoptable dogs needed to be tested with another dog, Luca happily volunteered. She was also a regular blood donor and saved many lives.

Well-known for her long tongue and constant affection, Luca became famous for giving drive-by kisses. In her younger years, she enjoyed running, playing with toys, and she absolutely loved swimming. Her love for swimming nearly killed her in 2020 when she started swimming to the middle of a lake, and Molly had to jump into the lake fully clothed to bring her to shore.

In her golden years, Luca spent most of her days napping with her best buddy, Ching, their senior Shih Tzu. They bonded the second Ching was brought into their home almost 3 years ago.

Luca was Molly’s first pit bull and will always hold a special place in her heart. She often drove Molly crazy with her antics and head-in-the-clouds personality, but she was beyond loved. Luca was the last of Molly’s original pack of dogs and that makes the loss so much harder.

We will miss Luca and always remember her for being one of the most accepting and loving dogs we have ever met.

The AVMA proudly joins the World Veterinary Association, HealthforAnimals, and colleagues from around the world in celebrating World Veterinary Day. The 2024 theme is "Veterinarians are essential health workers."

Today's veterinarians are the only doctors educated to protect the health of both animals and people. They work hard to address the health and welfare needs of every species of animal. Veterinarians also play critical roles in environmental protection, research, food safety, and public health. Thank you to all the veterinarians around the world!

We would like to continue to recognize our amazing staff. Next up:

Jessica Hank

🐶Serving in the veterinary profession is a passion for Jessica. She has worked at our clinic for 6 years and worked with most of our team elsewhere prior to that so we know each other well!

🐾Jessica has the amazing ability to multitask, keeping track of everything happening at once! We only have one person answering our phone and she’s able to skillfully manage it all, answer the phone, emails, Facebook messages, text messages, in person communication. She does it all!

🦮She is compassionate and gently cares for each animal as if they were her own, especially when the pet is hospitalized. She enjoys the relationships established in our small practice and going the extra mile to take care of clients and their precious pets.

😁It is her friendly voice you will hear most of the time when you call our clinic. She has a heart of gold and provides excellent care and compassion to each animal she meets, and has a natural calming ability to soothe scared or stressed animals.

🩺Jessica has been in the veterinary field for 18 years and counting. She studied veterinary technology at Penn Foster College and holds a degree in accounting from Kaplan University.

😻While she has worked in veterinary clinics in multiple states such as North Carolina, New Orleans and Houston; there's just no place like home and returned home to Sault Ste Marie, living with her four dogs; Kimber, Ferdinand, Mason and Skip, and her husband Chris.

🦴While Jessica loves all breeds, she has a soft spot for Australian Shepherds. When she is not at work, she enjoys spending time at her house on the river relaxing and reading a good book. Jessica looks forward to seeing all of you and caring for your fur babies. ❤️

⭐️Earlier this week, we introduced you to our newest team member.

🙂Now I’d like to highlight our dedicated staff who have been with the practice for many years.

🌻First up, longest team member:

Molly Bonacci

🏆For those of you who know Molly, she is not thrilled with being in the spotlight, but she deserves some recognition!

👩🏽‍⚕️Molly was the very first employee I hired when I started this practice in 2015, nine years ago. Molly took the risk to change jobs and help develop a brand new practice and idea, house call veterinary care serving the eastern upper peninsula. She spent many hot July days out in the new mobile clinic doing inventory and getting the clinic ready for patients.

📳We were both so excited when the phone started to ring and we were able to do our very first house call together.

🚐Over the last nine years, the practice has evolved and expanded. Molly has been through it all and has helped the practice be what it is today, doing so much behind the scenes with organization and efficiency.

🩺Molly has served in the veterinary profession for nearly 20 years. She was educated at NMU, LSSU, Penn Foster College and Baker College and studied veterinary technology before working full-time in veterinary clinics throughout the state. Her technical skills are impeccable, with the ability to draw blood and place catheters in the most dehydrated, fragile and elderly patients. It can be very challenging and she makes it look easy. She is a good mentor to those learning new skills in difficult situations.

🐈Over the years we have captured cats from behind couches and under beds, crawled in dog houses and have had some unique experiences as we cared for pets in the home-setting.

🦴Molly can be quiet on the surface, but she cares very much for all the pets that walk through our doors. And when their final days come, she handles their bodies with dignity, respect and care, as if it was her own pet.

🐾She makes the most beautiful clay paw prints so clients can have a keepsake of their beloved pet forever. 🎀

🦮Molly shares her home with 5 lucky dogs and 7 cats, husband Joe and a lot of chickens! An avid runner, Molly starts every day with a 5+ mile run and a walk with her dogs. She pet sits and has a knack for handling the most challenging animals (my Walter is top of her list ha ha).

🐶Molly, you are appreciated for all you do. Thank you for persevering through the challenging times over the last nine years to continue to serve our clients and patients so well.

👩‍⚕️Stay tuned for more staff highlights. And thank you to all of you who entrust us with your pet’s care.

Dr. Jill

🐾We are excited to welcome McKenzy Wagner-Sebastian, LVT, to our team! 🐶

🩺McKenzy grew up here in Sault Ste. Marie on her family’s farm. It was early on in her life when she realized her passion for medicine, specifically veterinary medicine. McKenzy has been in the veterinary field since 2018 and became a licensed veterinary technician (LVT) in 2022 after receiving her degree in Veterinary Technology from Penn Foster College. She has worked for several practices, two being Riversbend Animal Hospital (Big Rapids) and Animal Emergency Hospital of Grand Rapids. McKenzy would not be the technician she is today if it wasn’t for the many amazing doctors (over 30!) and technicians who have coached her along the way. She thoroughly enjoys learning and strives to continue her education to provide the best care for her patients and their people.

🐎McKenzy lives on her family farm with her husband Zach, two dogs, one cat, and nine horses. She and her husband also own and manage two local small businesses. In her free time, McKenzy enjoys horseback riding, barrel racing, hiking, and boating.

Cat Herders Day is one of our favorite days of the year because tasks that may seem impossible (like, say, herding cats) are considered routine in the veterinary profession. Some days, the job of a veterinary professional really does feel like herding cats, both figuratively and literally, but we love our work anyway! 😾👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

As more cases of canine respiratory disease pop up throughout the U.S., we want to share a few best practices to ensure your dog stays healthy and safe this holiday season.
