🐴 The Tennessee Walking Horse may show out with their flashy strides and high steps but they were originally bred for utility. They are an excellent breed for pulling carts, racing, long rides, and just a great all purpose horse breed.

🐴 The Tennessee Walking Horse has a closed stud book. This means that every single foal bred since 1947 must have two registered parents to be eligible for registration.

🐴 The breed is famous for overstepping while in stride. Horse people refer to this as the “Big Lick.” It is unique to the breed and it’s what makes them stand out during shows. This over-stride would be considered a fault in other horse breeds while as with the Tennessee Walker it is a desired trait.

🐴 They have three distinct gaits: flat-foot walk, running walk, and a canter. Both of the walks are four-beat gaits and the canter is a three beat gait also know as “the rocking chair canter.”

🐴 Tennessee Walker’s are not easily identified by their colors because they come in 14 different varieties. Their wide choice in color is due to their diverse lineage.

🐴 The breed averages at 17 hands tall but usually weighs between 900-1200 lbs. Tall and lanky suits them just fine.
