Happy National Ice Cream Day! 🍦

Dogs eating ice cream: It just sounds right! Your dog loves yummy treats, so you're sure he'd love a lick of soft serve when it's hot outside. But, is it bad for them, or can dogs eat ice cream safely? The truth is, as cute as it seems to share your dessert with your fluffy friend, it's best to keep your dog far away from any ice cream.

To keep your four-legged friend safe, we recommend putting down the scoop and opting for a dog-friendly ice cream alternative instead. Here are some ideas:
-Banana 'ice cream': Freeze bananas and blend them. You can also add apples, pumpkin or dog-safe peanut butter to the mix.
-Freeze plain apple sauce and pumpkin puree in silicone molds for a treat
-Plain Ice Cubes
-Pet-safe ice cream

Recently, there have been several cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) reported in the Champaign-Urbana area.

RMSF is a bacterial infection spread by the bite of an infected tick. Transmission occurs 5-20 hours after the tick bites. RMSF can also be spread by coming into contact with the tick’s blood or f***s. Signs of RMSF typically appear within 3 days but can take as long as 14 days.

Clinical signs are often vague in dogs, but common signs include:
·Fever
·Joint and muscle pain
·Lethargy
·Lack of appetite
·Bleeding from eyes/gums
·Tremors
·Swelling in face and legs
·Bruising
·Vomiting
·Abdominal pain
·Nose bleeds
·Dark, tarry diarrhea
·Wobbling while walking

Not all ticks carry RMSF. The ticks which can transmit RMSF include the American Dog Tick, Brown Dog Tick, Rocky Mountain Wood Tick, and sometimes the Lone Star Tick.

RMSF can be deadly if treatment is delayed. Proper removal and disposal of attached and non-attached ticks is critical.
·Do not squeeze or crush the tick.
·Do not light tick on fire.
·Do not cover tick in petroleum jelly or nail polish.
