Many dogs can be desensitized to fireworks and many can't. There is nothing wrong with you or your dog if it is terrified of loud explosions, fireworks or thunder. Actually it is a very normal thing to be scared of. Of course there are many dogs that can be trained through counter conditioning and calming exercises to be more comfortable with all those loud noises but there are also some that can't.

I think it is absolutely gross the way I see trainers shaming owners of fearful dogs every year around this time.

Think about it from a a dog's perspective for a second. Everything is fine and peaceful and suddenly the house lights up and there's a terrifyingly loud sound. The dog has no understanding of why that just happened, where it came from and how to get away from it. It screams danger yet the dog can't run and feel safe from it. Thunderstorms, gun shots, fireworks are all very scary sounds that make sense for a dog to want to get away from and being in our homes their flight options are very limited.

If you have a dog that is terrified of fireworks you are not a bad owner and your dog isn't messed up!

I recommend making your dog's crate nice and comfy. Get them heavily exercised prior to the start of the fireworks and/or storm. Once the fireworks are going to start crate them. Put on some music, fans, air conditioning etc to drown out the sound. Shut the lights and if necessary cover the crate. Just make your dog as comfortable as possible to get through it and then life goes on once it's all over. If you feel that your dogs' fear is just too intense then you may want to speak with your vet about getting something to take the edge off just for this situation.

Don't feel like you're a failure of an owner for having a dog that's scared of things that are completely unpredictable and totally natural to be scared of.

Hard to believe it's been 2 years already. This is why we're here, showing Griffon's Journey. We get it. We were the owners struggling, and hopeless. We went through it, we did the work, and now we get to live a happy, safe, healthy life with our once "dangerous" dog. We've been where you are, and are proof that it doesn't have to be that way. YOU can make a difference. WE can show YOU how, just like Solid K9, and The Good Dog showed us.

Great info

The original shock collars suck—seriously. I would never recommend them.

Cheap modern e-collars suck too. The $50 Amazon special is NOT WORTH IT.

But modern, high quality e-collars? They’re muscle stimulators with 100 different levels, which means you can dial in precisely to the level needed for any given moment—and no higher.

When you pair modern, high quality e-collars with proper training (there must be training!), the e-collar becomes a communication device that can bridge the gap between human and canine. That tactile feeling can get through to your dog even when words do not!

The only thing “shocking” about modern, high quality e-collars paired with a conscientious training approach is how effective and gentle they can be.

Four snoozing doggos. Training is tiring work 😴 🙃

Charlie is with us for the weekend. He knows basic obedience commands, but his arousal level is off the charts. We're going to work on getting him to slow down and chill out. First thing we worked on was calmly going in and out of the crate.

We've been a little quiet on social media lately, but just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that we are working on BIG things for 2022! Look for new training options, including a "do it yourself" instructional video series, as well as group obedience classes and problem solving weekend seminars!

So happy to be able to educate people on the tools we use to train dogs. So many people get the wrong idea when they see the tools and many have unrealistic expectations that you can just put the tool on the dog and it's magically trained. We had a great turn out tonight.
Hope to hear from some of you soon :)

It's also really awesome that we were able to bring Griffon and Sparky, and see her so relaxed and calm with so much going on around her.

So important to understand the difference 🙌

So important to understand the difference 🙌

We get this comment often anytime we show a dog on video with off leash recall that happens to be wearing a remote collar.

It’s an interesting statement and I think we all need to understand marker training a bit more to bring some insight to this statement.

When we teach ANY obedience command with positive reinforcement, we use something called a “marker” to mark the behavior when it’s performed. This can be a clicker, a verbal “good” or “yes” hell, you can even use the word “pizza” if you wanted to. What matters most is what follows the marker- usually food and praise. That word/marker now holds a very positive association.

We also use verbal/audible cues that we link to the behavior in order to teach it. For example, we use the word “here” for recall. But you could also use “come”, a whistle, or a kazoo if you really wanted to. What matters most is that you show the dog what you want AFTER they hear this noise. You can teach that through leash work and luring and eventually low level remote collar work.

Every single dog that we train is trained this way. They are trained all the way up to verbal compliance before they ever even feel a remote collar for obedience.

So a magic whistle isn’t teaching our dogs to come back, and neither is an e collar. Good old fashioned dog training is.

The remote collar becomes our “what if” button IF the dog decides NOT to come back on verbal cue. It’s rare, but let’s face it, it can happen.

We prefer to have dogs off leash with 100% reliability vs praying and wishing for the best if they decide to blow off a command to chase prey or catch a scent trail (which never happens in the real world right?)

Responsible off leash reliability starts with multiple means of communication with your dog. Marker training is the foundation of everything we do, but we also want our dogs to be safe and reliable ALL of the time, so we reinforce it with our invisible leash (aka e collar) just to be extra safe when enjoying our freedoms.

Just a reminder! It will be here before ya know it! Come see us at Diversion Brewery this Friday from 5-9pm
