Many dogs can be desensitized to fireworks and many can't. There is nothing wrong with you or your dog if it is terrified of loud explosions, fireworks or thunder. Actually it is a very normal thing to be scared of. Of course there are many dogs that can be trained through counter conditioning and calming exercises to be more comfortable with all those loud noises but there are also some that can't.

I think it is absolutely gross the way I see trainers shaming owners of fearful dogs every year around this time.

Think about it from a a dog's perspective for a second. Everything is fine and peaceful and suddenly the house lights up and there's a terrifyingly loud sound. The dog has no understanding of why that just happened, where it came from and how to get away from it. It screams danger yet the dog can't run and feel safe from it. Thunderstorms, gun shots, fireworks are all very scary sounds that make sense for a dog to want to get away from and being in our homes their flight options are very limited.

If you have a dog that is terrified of fireworks you are not a bad owner and your dog isn't messed up!

I recommend making your dog's crate nice and comfy. Get them heavily exercised prior to the start of the fireworks and/or storm. Once the fireworks are going to start crate them. Put on some music, fans, air conditioning etc to drown out the sound. Shut the lights and if necessary cover the crate. Just make your dog as comfortable as possible to get through it and then life goes on once it's all over. If you feel that your dogs' fear is just too intense then you may want to speak with your vet about getting something to take the edge off just for this situation.

Don't feel like you're a failure of an owner for having a dog that's scared of things that are completely unpredictable and totally natural to be scared of.

Hard to believe it's been 2 years already. This is why we're here, showing Griffon's Journey. We get it. We were the owners struggling, and hopeless. We went through it, we did the work, and now we get to live a happy, safe, healthy life with our once "dangerous" dog. We've been where you are, and are proof that it doesn't have to be that way. YOU can make a difference. WE can show YOU how, just like Solid K9, and The Good Dog showed us.

Great info

The original shock collars suck—seriously. I would never recommend them.

Cheap modern e-collars suck too. The $50 Amazon special is NOT WORTH IT.

But modern, high quality e-collars? They’re muscle stimulators with 100 different levels, which means you can dial in precisely to the level needed for any given moment—and no higher.

When you pair modern, high quality e-collars with proper training (there must be training!), the e-collar becomes a communication device that can bridge the gap between human and canine. That tactile feeling can get through to your dog even when words do not!

The only thing “shocking” about modern, high quality e-collars paired with a conscientious training approach is how effective and gentle they can be.

Charlie is with us for the weekend. He knows basic obedience commands, but his arousal level is off the charts. We're going to work on getting him to slow down and chill out. First thing we worked on was calmly going in and out of the crate.
