Grace, Duke, Greta and Suse went to a UKC show ... and this happened ... Grace three Best of Breed, one Reserver; poor girl was in heat so she could not compete in Rally; Greta one Best of Breed, three Reserve; G Greta 8 x 8 in Nosework with three High in Trial, the rest seconds, and her overall Novice Nosework title, She qualified for Total Dog. Duke 4 x 4, two high in trial, one second. Suse recovered from all of the fun about Tuesday of the next week. They are fun to show, and fun to spend any day with. That's the important part. Just love my pals.

I recently received this message from one of the nation's foremost Labrador breeders. Rye was one of his puppies...

"Rye is a Turner-Edward daughter; she is owned and loved by Anne Griffiths of Chagrin Falls. When Anne was preparing for Rye’s arrival, we discussed spaying options at great length. Anne wisely chose the ovarian spare spay procedure that may be performed after a female dog’s first complete heat cycle.

The procedure allows for retention of at least one o***y so that the dog has the benefit of her hormones. Both male and female reproductive hormones confer a variety of health benefits well beyond reproduction. What exactly they are has not been adequately explained to the general public. For instance, early sterilization can give rise to significant orthopedic problems. Canine reproductive hormones are also the first line of defense against an estimated 50 different types of cancer. And finally, hormone retention increases the possibility of extended longevity.

Today we are losing dogs earlier in life to cancer. Again it has been established that neutering and spaying can cause or contribute to the disease’s onset. Still veterinarians encourage traditional neutering and spaying; many do not explain the long-term downside of the procedure unless specifically asked.

Hopefully, there is no reason to neuter a male Labrador Retriever. Keeping the male Labrador intact is a lifeline. The relevant consideration is how responsible are the people that own the dog? I note that folks that acquire puppies from me are highly responsible. Their dogs are not left to wander. And they appreciate a male dog that has male features, examples of which are increased lean muscle mass, a greater width of the back of the skull, and so on.

Nevertheless, there are situations where neutering and spaying still have their place. Rescue organizations will not release puppies intact and I agree with the philosophy. They are usually unregistered mixed breed dogs that are going to stable and loving homes. Taking responsibility for the offspring of previously mismanaged breedings is enough responsibility. Providing discarded dogs a chance at life is likewise enough responsibility. And in the rescue’s case, the decision to neuter and spay has relevant social considerations beyond the medical advantages of not doing so."
