Is your dog coughing? Is your dog around other dogs?

We have received many panicked calls from our community about an unusual respiratory disease circulating in dogs in the Northeast. While we are seeing cases of kennel cough and pneumonia, we are not seeing anything that is out of the ordinary and have confirmed with the Maine State Veterinarian’s office that there is not an increased cause for concern.

Please reach out to your veterinarian if you are concerned about your dog or have further questions. Maine Veterinary Medical Center Rarebreed Veterinary Partners

We are pleased to introduce you to Dr. Katie Lopez, veterinary cardiologist and recent addition to the amazing Maine Veterinary Medical Center healthcare team in Scarborough, Maine.

Dr. Lopez received her DVM from Tufts University, where she also completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery, followed by a cardiology residency. After completing her residency, Dr. Lopez received board certification in cardiology from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). While she finds every aspect of cardiology fascinating, Dr. Lopez particularly enjoys managing patients with valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathy, as well as long-term management of congestive heart failure and arrhythmias. Dr. Lopez grew up in southern Maine and is thrilled to be back in the area. Outside of work, she enjoys all the outdoor activities that Maine has to offer, as well as spending time with her partner, Nick, and their two rambunctious cats, Tiny and Smalls.

Has your pet ever been treated by a criticalist here at MVMC? Many people don't know what exactly a criticalist is, so here are some quick facts to help!

🐾 Criticalists are veterinarians who specialize in emergencies and critical care.
🐾 Criticalists must complete specific training in other specialities such as: neurology, surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, etc.
🐾 Criticalists are highly trained to stabilize any type of emergency that comes through the doors including cardiac emergencies, respiratory emergencies, and shock.
🐾 Criticalists are quick thinkers under pressure, and are ready to be the "calm" during "chaos."

MVMC currently has FIVE criticalists on staff, and we couldn't be more proud and honored to work beside them every day!
