Meet Loki, a 10 week old kitten that sustained a left mandibular fracture (see the red lines on the 3D reconstruction CT). Since he is still growing and his jaw is so tiny, bone plates would not be the ideal repair as it might be in a larger/ older animal.
Loki had a modified labial button technique performed to help stabilize the jaw while the bone heals. It’s essentially a way to ‘wire’ the jaw but allowing for him to eat through the small opening in the mouth. Helpfully he’ll heal in 3-4 weeks and the buttons and suture can be removed.
No- his name is not getting changed to Buttons.

Meet Meyer, a 1 1/2 year old Sphynx, and his dad Dana. Meyer came to us 3 months ago for a severe ear infection that had migrated into his brain causing a life threatening abscess (yellow arrow in CT image). He had a CT scan and surgery to remove the entire ear canal as well as open the middle ear to get rid of as much infection as possible. This surgery is called a total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy. He just came back for a recheck CT scan and the infection is completely resolved. He is feeling great (despite being a little camera shy) and will need a few more weeks of antibiotics. Thank you Dana for trusting us with your baby and for taking such good care of him in the postoperative period.

Check out our new friend Harriet who was brought in by the amazing people at Darrowby Farm Sanctuary. She was the sweetest 🐷 and was an absolutely wonderful guest. Next time you want to donate to an amazing cause, think of helping out some farm animals that are lucky enough to retire with Amanda and her staff.

I’d like to introduce you to Patch who is a 5ish year old Pointer that was brought to us by the German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue New England with a chronic femoral fracture. The bone was starting to heal in an abnormal position and Patch was unable to use the leg. We were able to break down the callus that was forming and realign the bone. The bone was stabilizing using an I-loc interlocking nail developed by BioMedtrix, which is the first one implanted in Maine. Patch’s eye was removed and he was neutered at the same time- a surgical trifecta which will allow him to go through one postop recovery period and then resume a long normal life. A serious thank you to everyone that has been part of Patch’s care!!! Maine Veterinary Medical Center Harvest Hills Animal Shelter Animal Emergency Clinic of Mid-Maine

Rylee going home but we had to get a photo with Dr. Ezra and some of the staff who cared for our angel at Maine Veterinary Medical Center. I can’t say enough about the care and kindness they all showed us. Last Tuesday was our worst day and today might be one of the most joyous. ❤️❤️❤️

And the alley-oop to Meghan Vaught DVM and the amazing critical care department for some top notch care following the procedure. We normally see about 10 open chest surgeries due to quills every year and well over 400 PPQ cases that start off less serious. These porcupines are no joke and the main issues is that dogs (with few exceptions) never learn to stay away. American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care (ACVECC)

Thank you so much to Idexx for donating masks so we can protect ourselves while we protect your family members with four legs (and sometimes three ;)

Today we want to send a shout out to IDEXX for the generous donation of protective personal masks. It was an overwhelming feeling of joy to receive your donation and be blessed with enough quantity to share with fellow veterinary hospitals.

These are images from a young dog with a Salter Harris fracture of the proximal tibia (right next to the knee). This means that there is a break through the physis (growth plate), which is the region where the bone elongates/ grows.
Rather than making a large incision and disrupting blood supply, the fracture was repaired under fluoroscopic guidance using a c arm. This allows direct visualization with real time (motion) X-rays. A clamp was first inserted to hold the fracture in reduction and restore the normal anatomy of the bone. Next, multiple pins were placed using a powered orthopedic drill to span the fracture gap.
Typically a dog of this age would require up to 6 weeks of activity restriction when disrupting the blood supply during traditional fracture repair. However with a minimally invasive approach like the one shown here, that time period will likely be reduced to 4 weeks. Besides the shortened recovery period, this patient will benefit from less postoperative pain and swelling with quicker return to function.
