Maggie
The Maine Veterinary Medical Center's Neurology department recently welcomed a special patient: Maggie, a newly adopted Shepherd mix who began exhibiting an abnormal gait shortly after coming home.
With the help of the doctors at Casco Bay Veterinary Hospital, a plan was made to have neurology consults at MVMC. An MRI revealed a diagnosis of multiple cartilaginous exostoses, a rare condition affecting cartilage and bone development.
While these exostoses can be asymptomatic, they can also cause pain, lameness, paresis, and even paralysis depending on their location and size.
In Maggie's case, the exostoses were causing discomfort that necessitated surgery to decompress her cervical spinal cord.
Thankfully, Maggie's surgery with Dr. Gallo was a success! She is already showing remarkable improvement and is well on her way to a full recovery. The rehab and sports medicine team at the Maine Veterinary Medical Center will be working closely with Maggie to ensure she regains her strength and continues to thrive.
We at the Maine Veterinary Medical Center are thrilled for Maggie and her new family. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for even rare conditions. With the right treatment plan, pets like Maggie can make a full recovery and live happy, healthy lives. 💙

Meadow
Meadow recently presented to our neurology department with hind-end plegia and concerns for IVDD (Intervertebral disc disease). One of our neurologists, Dr. Maggie Green, and her team were quick to find answers for this sweet girl.
With IVDD the normal cushions that sit between the vertebrae become degenerative and can protrude or herniate into the vertebral canal. This material damages the spinal cord as it herniates/protrudes. Additionally, it prevents normal blood flow to the spinal cord that is necessary for healing.
An MRI confirmed a herniated intervertebral disc with spinal cord compression and surgical decompression was performed. Her recovery was quick and she was soon able to go home for continued care.
Meadow's family made this sweet video of her journey. We are so glad she's doing well at home! Thank you for entrusting us in her care.
