Structurally, the Student AVMA consists of an Executive Board and a House of Delegates (HOD) composed of two representatives from each member chapter. The House of Delegates meets twice yearly; in July during the AVMA Convention, and in the spring during the annual Student AVMA Educational Symposium. Members of the Executive Board are selected by the House of Delegates. They include the president,

president-elect, secretary, treasurer, international exchange officer, communications and public relations officer, editor-in-chief, global and public health officer, veterinary economics officer, and cultural outreach officer. The formation of a national organization of veterinary students has enabled what were once isolated student chapters to function effectively as a single unit on the national scene. The Student AVMA coordinates student chapter functions, promotes the exchange of ideas and information among students, and represents its members in matters that concern them, both as students and as future veterinarians.

Black History Month is an important time to reflect on the immense lack of representation in the veterinary profession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only about 2% of veterinarians are Black which fails to match the diversity of our client population. Similarly, less than 4% of veterinary students are Black according to the 2022 AAVMC report. We encourage you to read about Black history and Black professionals in veterinary medicine. Furthermore, share events going on at your school with to bring greater awareness to your peers.

Be sure to check out blackdvmnetwork.com to get involved. You can also learn more about and the 2024 theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” at asalh.org.

Today we remember the millions of Jews and other minority groups that were subjected to suffering and death during the Holocaust. The date was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the day Soviet forces liberated the largest N**i concentration and death camp in 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is important to remember the horrors of the past to prevent them from recurring in the future. Today is a time for reflection, education, and raising awareness about the consequence of discrimination, hatred, and prejudice.

Students at Western University College of Veterinary Medicine are making a huge impact on both human and animal health! They hosted a Street Dog Coalition Preventive Care Clinic, providing free exams, vaccines, microchips, flea/tick prevention, grooming, and supplies to 36 pets in the local unhoused community. The event also partnered with students from the Pomona Homeless Outreach Program and the College of Osteopathic Medicine to offer human services, including blood pressure screenings, flu vaccines, hygiene kits, and housing resources. With volunteers from multiple colleges, it was a true One Health interdisciplinary effort!

SAVMA aims to empower the future of veterinary medicine through diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellbeing! Your SAVMA Wellbeing Officers Megan Gulsby (Tufts University) and Rebecca Michelin (Atlantic Veterinary College) represented SAVMA at the AVMA DEIW Summit with the goal of forging connections, gaining new perspectives, and engaging in conversations about Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Wellbeing in the future of veterinary medicine. After the summit, they treated themselves to a trip to the Georgia Aquarium, which was a soul-healing, energizing, and joyful experience for them both!

The AVMA's DEIW Summit—first of its kind in veterinary medicine—is more than just a conference. It's the gathering of a community united by the shared goal of fostering environments where creativity, wellbeing, and collaboration flourish.

Nominations for students close tomorrow! This is a great opportunity for you to recognize a fellow student who has gone above and beyond for our profession!

In recognition of Dr. John L. Pitts' service to SAVMA:
While still in veterinary school John served as President-elect of the University of California-Davis SAVMA. In 1969 he chaired a committee that was instrumental in creating SAVMA as an autonomous organization and enabling what were once isolated student chapters to function effectively as a single unit on the national scene. Honoring his contributions to veterinary students, in 2006 SAVMA established the Dr. John Pitts Distinguished Service Award which recognizes leadership exhibited by veterinary students.

This award is established to honor a veterinary student who has provided exemplary service to the veterinary profession. The John Pitts Award for Distinguished Service is open to any veterinary student who is a member in good standing with SAVMA at the time the award is presented.
