Hi 👋!

Day 19 of recovery: It's been almost three weeks since my surgery. Nothing has really changed. Although it remains at a controllable level, I am still dealing with swelling and pain. I am continuing to elevate my hand, use ice, medication, and, of course, follow the doctor's orders by not using my left hand at all. I have been really concerned about the tingling and numbness I am feeling in my left four fingers. A pinprick test (a test that assesses your ability to feel a pinprick and differentiate between sharp and dull) was done. I could feel dull pinprick to all by fingers except my index. This worried me, but after speaking with my occupational therapist, she informed me that it is quite normal to experience tingling and numbness in your fingers after thumb surgery. She said this is often a result of the surgical procedure impacting nearby nerves, and these sensations usually subside over time as the nerves heal; however, if the numbness is severe or persists for a long period, it is important to consult my doctor. I found this information very comforting.

It's been physically and emotionally challenging at times, but I've been enjoying binge-watching, going out and about some days with my husband, and doing what I can to stay busy and not just lie around bored. I have now begun working on the cute dachshund puzzle I received for Christmas from some clients. I'm enjoying this 🧩!

Although I am temporarily closed due to surgery and recovery, I am trying to keep up with the clerical work needed to maintain the business during this time. Happy Furbaby Friday! 😺🐶

So, for a while now, I've been trying to transition my dog Tango to sleeping at the end of the bed or by my legs because, with him beside me, it's gotten harder and harder for me to get out of bed during the night sometimes because well... my body ain't getting any younger lol it's aging. 😌
Since he was a puppy, he's usually slept by my pillow, beside me, like when my sons were toddlers and I could cuddle with them throughout the night. Since I was a child, I've always cuddled with stuffed animals 🧸 or furbaby friends who enjoyed cuddling. Tango has been my teddy bear; he's an excellent cuddler! I am very considerate of animals' feelings. For example, unless it is extremely necessary, I will crawl over, scoot, or slide rather than disturb a sleeping dog or cat lying beside me or on me. Having Tango transition to sleeping on his floor bed at night hasn't been an option for me, but one my husband has been urging, especially since it's even harder for me to prop myself up and get out of bed with one hand. This winter I bought an electric blanket for him because we always sleep with fans on, regardless of the outside temperature. Tango and my husband have had to deal with this 🙃 because the fan helps me fall asleep and sleep well. Since I placed Tango's new heating blanket at the foot of the bed, he has chosen to sleep there every night! I haven't had to redirect him once! I'm so happy because it was making me sad having difficulty getting him to transition to sleep there since he's been my snuggle bug for six years. He'd give me the saddest looks. We will still snuggle, but just not all night long anymore. He's officially my feet and leg warmer now. Lol 😃❤️🐾

Day 13 of recovery: The swelling continues to subside, and the pain is subsiding as well. For the past two days, I have been able to use ice to help with the pain rather than needing to resort to pain medication. It has been a relief! This evening, during my appointment with Liberty Rehabilitation Specialists, I was able to get my stitches removed. That was a relief as well! They itched! Steri-Strips were used to stabilize the incisions after the stitches were removed. I'm feeling better!

I learned about my surgery as the specialist read surgical notes to me.The surgeon fused two nerves, a process often called "nerve repair" or "nerve grafting," where severed nerve ends are carefully stitched together to allow regeneration and restoration of nerve function. This is typically done in cases of significant nerve damage due to trauma or injury. During the procedure, the surgeon also realigned bone fragments. Smaller fragments of bone or cartilage that had become separated and were floating in the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint were removed. The splint I have on will hold the bone fragments in place and allow the nerves to regenerate and regain function. Apparently a splint is suitable for fractures where the bone fragments are relatively aligned and stable, allowing them to heal while immobilized with minimal movement. The recovery period for the combined procedures is approximately 12 weeks.

I am restricted from using my left hand, but thankfully I am right-handed. However, the inability to use both hands for tasks creates many challenges. Some tasks are more difficult than others; some are impossible. It can be very frustrating at times.

Difficult Daily Tasks:

• Thoroughly washing my right hand and arm while showering.
• Getting dressed.
• House chores such as:
• Washing dishes.
• Mopping with certain mops (exchanging mop heads).
• Sweeping.
• Tying a trash bag and putting a new trash bag in the can.
• Opening and closing certain products (e.g., foods, drinks, hygiene products).
•preparation of certain foods

Pretty Much Impossible Daily Tasks:

• Folding laundry and linens (some laundry is manageable).
• Making a bed.
• Using a dustpan after sweeping.
• Mopping with certain mops (exchanging mop heads).
• Certain dishes that require both hands for thorough cleaning.
• Opening and closing certain products.
•Carrying heavy items that require use of both hands
•preparation of some foods

*I'm learning that different methods and products for certain tasks are thankfully becoming helpful in managing tasks with one hand*

Here at home, I have the luxury of receiving any help I need from my husband, whereas at work, I do not.

24-hour Care and Overnight service:

These services require daily tasks involving light housework such as sweeping, mopping, washing dishes, taking out the trash, washing and folding laundry, and making the bed before checkout. Showering and dressing are also necessary.

Other tasks may include opening canned food, cleaning a cat box, picking up dog waste, picking up soiled dog pads and cleaning messes, cleaning up accidents, applying harnesses, applying dog diapers, and administering medication—all of which will be difficult or impossible for me.

I must also consider liability concerns.

A major liability concern would be the need to lift dogs (except small dogs that do not squirm excessively) and dog walks.

For example: Walking a reactive dog. A reactive dog is a dog that overreacts to certain people, objects, or situations. This can include barking, lunging, or growling. Although I am highly experienced working with reactive dogs, without the use of both hands, this becomes a potential liability concern.

It is for these reasons that I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding, and ask that you continue to be patient and understanding until I reopen my business and return to work without worry about my performance or anything that could become unsafe for me or my furbaby friends.

I am eager to return to work, so as my recovery continues, I may eventually be willing to take on drop-in visits that do not involve dog walking and require minimal tasks I can perform.
