Please join us today in remembering the sacrifice the men and women in blue make for us every day. We lost a family member 7 years ago today, please thank a man or woman in blue today to honor his sacrifice. Never forget.

We would like to give a shout out to a local small business. We purchased a few new leads from American Leash Co. and we have to say they look to be pretty good. If you are looking to purchase a lead please give them a shot. Great prices, great quality, excellent service. Even if you aren’t in the market for a new lead PLEASE go to their FB page and give them a like. The more likes they get the more their name gets out there and as you know small businesses need all the help they can get. Smashing the like button cost you nothing but means the world to a small business.

A locally owned small business in Central Wisconsin, specializing in BioThane dog leashes.

Wishing everyone a Happy Holidays and a Merry Christmas from all of us here at CWK9!

12/22/2023

First we would like to say Merry Christmas to everyone!!

Second we would like to announce some big changes that will be coming to Central Wisconsin K-9 in the new year.

1) We will be moving from our current location in Schofield so we can save on some cost to prepare to have a new facility built.

2) Due to our temporary locations size we will be scaling back on our obedience training so there will be less spaces each month.

3) Unfortunately our biggest and most impactful change of all will be the lose of our trainer Erica. Erica has been with us for a little over three years and has gone from a timid unsure assistant to the manager and lead obedience trainer of our operation. Not only has she grown to be a powerhouse of a trainer, she has also always gone the extra mile to take care of you, our customers. From nail trimmings and grooming, to potty training and doggy photographer you could always be sure your pets care was her number one priority. She could often be found dancing with your dogs during training enjoying what she did with all of her heart. Her passion for all things dog is second to none and her knowledge of the world of dogs is inspiring. Losing such a customer focused and dedicated employee is never easy and we will defiantly feel the sting of her absence but she will forever be a key part in our growth and our success over the years. We wish nothing but the best for her on her new chapter in life and she will always hold a place in our hearts. We encourage everyone that has been blessed enough to have worked with Erica to join us in wishing her well over the next week before she moves away.

With the last purebred dog breed that we've worked with posted, we are going to end this series with the most popular type of dog we get for training!
The mixed breeds.
When it comes to having a dog that has multiple breeds in them, it is a complete grab bag of traits that you may get. The biggest take we wanted to share with talking about different breeds and their quirks is that genetics is huge in determining their looks and behaviors and what each breed brings to the table. Mixing does not negate those traits. Temperament wise you may get a dog with both parents temperaments, or a dog that leans more towards one or the other. That can be both nice and harder to manage traits if you are not experienced in certain breeds. Temperament is genetic. Dog aggression, fearfulness, resource guarding, mouthiness, high prey drive, herding and hunting instinct, friendliness, aloofness, human aggression, high energy, affectionate vs more reserved, independence, vocalizing, and so many more. Certain breeds with their traits have different needs that need to be met and worked with, however genetics can not be trained out. This is why it is important to understand the breed of dog you have and especially with mixed breeds it's a guessing game as to how they could turn out.
There is a huge misconception that just because a dog is mixed means that it is inherently more healthy than purebreds, this is false. It comes down to once again genetics. The only way to ensure a more healthy dog is by properly health testing the parents, and making sure they have conformation that is not causing discomfort. Dogs can be carriers of a genetic disease without being affected by it themselves so if you breed two carriers you now have affected puppies. Breeding mixed dogs does not guarantee a healthier puppy.
Stray Dogs, Dogs in Shelters/Rescue, Breeders, Oops Litters,
However you acquire your dog it is important to do your research if they will be a good fit for you, regarding energy levels, drive outlets, coat maintaince, specific behavioral concerns, possible health risks, and how to go about making sure their needs are being met so they can be the best dog they can be, and so that you are well equipped for your new family member!

Breed 38!
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
This breed of dog has been around since possibly the 10th century! The Welsh used them as herding dogs, but they made lovely family companions as well. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is typically seen with a docked tail, they can be born with a natural bob as well! They are a short double coated breed that has some intense shedding. This breed should be bold but friendly, occasionally they may be aloof but never shy or aggressive! They do well having a job to do, and like to be active. They are very smart and can pick up things quickly, but can have a stubborn/independent streak as well. It is not uncommon for this breed to have a voice, they are known for liking to bark!

Breed 37 that we've worked with
The French Bulldog!
French Bulldogs started to be created in the 19th century, the lace makers of Nottingham, England began breeding a smaller breed of Bulldog as a lap dog and companion. They have silly clownish personalities, are incredibly friendly, affectionate, and playful. They love a good cuddle. They are more active than most people believe bulldogs to be and do need an outlet for their energy but typically have a lovely off switch and are happy to chill on the couch for a nap. They are more dog social than most "bull breeds" but its not uncommon for dog aggression to pop up in some of them. French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed which means they have a shorter snout, they don't do too well in excess heat for long periods of time. Their wrinkles require to be wiped out often to keep them clean. This breed has blossomed in popularity, and due to the health concerns they can exhibit with bad breeding it's important to buy from a reputable breeder that is proving their dogs and doing the necessary health tests. Colors that French Bulldogs come in are white, cream, fawn. And markings are brindle, piebald, black masks, black shadings, and white markings. Frenchies do not come in dilute (Such as Lilac or Blue), they do not come in merle, any breeder marketing "rare" colors (Such as "albinos" or "pink") is one to stay away from. This breed does not come in a long coat, "fluffy frenchies" have been mixed to introduce the long coat gene and another thing to keep away from when looking for a breeder.

Breed 36
The American Hairless Terrier!
This breed is a direct descendant from the Rat Terrier. A hairless puppy that was born in the 1970s named Josephine and she became the foundation dog for the American Hairless Terrier! Despite the name, they can come in a coated variety as well. These dogs are terriers and can be prone to having a prey/hunt drive. They can have more high energy, but also should have a nice off switch. They have the typical terrier grit and confidence! They tend to excel within sports and can be quite versatile. This breed can be a good option for those struggling with allergies, but they do require some maintaince to keep their skin clean and healthy. They can be suspectable to sunburn, and tend to get chilly in the colder climates.

Breed 35
The Australian Shepherd!
Aussies were created around the late 1900s and were bred as herding dogs. The Australian Shepherd is the only livestock working breed developed in America! They were named for the sheep brought over from Australia, which their ancestors herded on the West Coast. This is a working breed, they absolutely thrive on having something do to! They are not couch potato dogs. They do best in either a working, sport, or active home! They are quite versatile dogs that will tackle anything you throw at them. Docking of the tails is common in this breed, but CAN be born with a natural bob as well! They are a double coated breed that require regular coat maintaince to maintain. Aussies are meant to be intelligent, with an even and good natured disposition who may be reserved with strangers. They are not meant to be aggressive, fearful, or shy.

Central Wisconsin K-9, LLC

Central Wisconsin K-9 was founded to provide industry-leading training, using the most effective, well-balanced methods available. Teaching techniques are constantly evolving, yet many trainers seem to be stuck using the old "tried and true" methods of yesteryear that don't yield the results we desire.

We aim to break that mold and move canine communication and training forward into the current era. Our team is constantly attending trainings and educating ourselves on new and different techniques to provide the best training program possible to our clients.

Here at Central Wisconsin K-9, we don't believe in buying customers for life, but instead empowering clients to learn how continue to build on their dogs training whether it be at home or in the field, without the need to constantly return for additional services.

We are not teaching your dog to simply do a few tricks, but giving you and your companion an effective, easy to understand communication method in which you can use to build future behaviors.
