We have the best volunteers here at Chubby Goat Acres, and among them are a couple and their two young children. Earlier this year one of the kids got a Lego farm sanctuary set! She was playing with it and said, “Look it’s Chris and Colin.” How cute is that?!

Colin had another visit with the neurology and physical therapy teams down at Purdue this week. They are thrilled with the progress he’s making. Our little man is over 18 pounds now and has gotten stronger and is much more aware of his feet! We’ll continue to work on his exercises until our visit next month. If you’d like to see the full report from the vets, sign up on our Patreon! Not only do you get to read exclusive posts from the CGA team, but you also help us to support the animals with the reliable, monthly donations.

“Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” After our post this morning, we received so many comments asking if we needed help, which we are so tremendously grateful for. Unfortunately we weren’t able to respond to those kind offers. However, one person saw our post and decided that we must need help. We have never met her before, but Jean showed up with her boots and a pitchfork, ready to dive into cleanup. Later, our volunteer Chrisann showed up to make sure the goats had a nice dry barn too. We are so thankful to all of you, to the helpers. We couldn’t do this without you and the million different ways you help us.

Meet Chrisann! She is one of our dedicated volunteers who comes every weekend to ensure that our goats have a fluffy, straw filled barn. She’s pretty popular here too, with her bright smile and willingness to do the dirty work. Plus, she always has pockets of animal crackers, which is always a bonus!! Thanks for all you do Chrisann!

This is such a simple, yet significant image. It’s taken Colin a tremendous amount of work to be able to achieve this position on completely flat ground. The nerve damage in his neck makes it hard for him to control a lot of the muscles in the front half of his body, primarily his neck and front legs. Little man has been doing a lot of intentional movement exercises, and it’s really rewarding to see them pay off. Colin is just over 7 weeks, and in the past week he’s broken 14 lbs and has finally began to really chew his cud. It’s true that Colin isn’t tracking the normal developmental milestones like most baby goats do, but that’s ok. He’s getting there- he’s just taking his time. And we’re right here with him for the ride.

Our perfectly imperfect boy is just over 6 weeks old now! That’s 6 weeks of stealing the heart of anyone who happens to cross his path or glance his way. Lori, pictured here, is one of his latest victims. This little man is just under 11 lbs now, and has finally discovered the joy of eating hay, pellets, and mulberry leaves- although the bottle still rules as the beacon of joy and happiness and everything good in the world. As our two house goats, Colin and Poppyseed have been spending a lot of time together, as she shows him the best tidbits to eat, or steals them for herself. Every day he grows stronger and stronger, and we know there is no limit to what this boy will be able to do.

For decades, George “Papa” Carter raised various chickens, ducks, peafowl, and pigeons as a hobby. From an early age, he involved his granddaughter Chris in caring for the birds. She would help care for them and learned all about their histories, needs, and different breeds. Although Papa didn’t kill any of his birds, every so often someone would come to buy them. One evening before the man was scheduled to come get some roosters, a family member told a young Chris the sad fate these birds would meet. That night she went into her papa’s coop and took every rooster. They didn’t go far- just across the field to her parents’ garage. The next morning, a shocked and confused George sent the man away with no birds, although he quickly suspected what became of them. Rather than scolding Chris, or forcing her to give the birds up, he built Chris her very first coop, and she had her first flock of chickens, a bachelor flock. The man never again came for any birds, and as Chris got older, more and more of the birds shifted to her care across the field. The bond that George had with Chris over the birds, and the love they shared between them and for the birds remained strong until his last day. Our co-founder Chris has continued this legacy, no longer raising birds, but caring for those in need. The avians we care for here at Chubby Goat Acres are a testament to what love, compassion, and respect for others can do.

Here at Chubby Goat Acres, we care for several unique residents. Stryker came to us as a young boy who was extremely sensitive to the sunlight. His eyes would get cloudy and weep and his eyelids would swell. When the cold weather hit, he was unable to maintain his body temperature. Thankfully, Dr. Keri suggested running an allergy panel on him. It was the worst she had ever seen, and ever since then he has been on oral immunotherapy twice a day. Every few months we get him retested so they can dial in his formulation. Stryker eagerly takes his medication, and he’s now able to be outside on all but the worst allergy days. Having a doctor who works closely with us, and who is willing to think creatively is critical to ensuring that our residents live the best lives possible.

Happy Father’s Day! We have three groups of dads and their kids here at Chubby Goat Acres. Many farmed animal fathers never even get to meet their offspring, much less spend their lives with them. We are fortunate to have Roo the goat and his daughter Eliza, sheep Dudley and his son Raphael, and Riley, pictured here with his sons Bo Diddley and Bo Jangles. We wish you love, peace, and compassion today!

It’s been an incredibly long, exhausting, but good day today. Summers are hard. There’s hay to stack, flies to battle, and the constant pressure to keep everyone cool and hydrated on these long, hot days. But everyone is happy and healthy, and for that, we are grateful. Little moments, like this one between Poppyseed and Colin, help to remind us what it’s all about.

Colin is 4 weeks old today! He’s learning to nibble on grass and broadleaf plantain, which is an excellent choice. He loves to cuddle and is growing so big! He’s just over 6.5 lbs now. Little horns have popped on his head, and he always lets us know when it’s time for his bottle. This little man is continuing to amaze us every day with how strong he is, and everyone is absolutely in love with him. Between all of us here, Colin is never left alone- goats, especially babies hate being alone. This way Colin can use all his energy to be the strongest boy he can be.

UPDATE: We have someone who has kindly offered to donate theirs to us! Thank you!

Does anyone local have a gently used pack n play? We have one for Colin, but because our little man hates to be by himself, it means dragging the pack and play up and down the stairs a few times a day depending on where we are, and it gets to be a lot. If you have one you’re not using anymore, we would love it! Pic of our boy napping after racing around in his wheelchair all morning and finally getting sleepy after his 8 am bottle.

It’s hard to get pictures that aren’t blurry when the subject is racing around! Colin got his morning exercise, and he was squirrelly and impatient just like a baby goat should be! His PT team told us that it’s best to do his exercises before he eats, and it’s absolutely true. Once he has his bottle, the frenzied chaos turns into soft, sleepy cuddles. He might have some different needs, but Colin acts just like a perfect little baby goat!

Colin has been rocking his physical therapy! Every day we chat with Dr. J., and she tells us how strong he is getting. His biggest challenge is balancing, and while it’s improving, it’s very possible that he might always have some difficulties with that. Despite this, she is extremely confident that he’s a little boy who can live a very fulfilled, happy life. She also feels like they have finally gotten Zip’s bladder infection under control and they have been slowly weaning him off the morphine to make sure he isn’t showing any more signs of pain. If all goes well, we’ll be heading down on Friday to pick up Zip, his buddy Oprah, and our little man!

Every morning Dorie and Palmer have to get special medications for their metabolic conditions. We dose them with a syringe to make sure they are receiving it all, and because grain is not ideal for them since they have to stay away from sugars. This is the reason they can’t be in a full, lush field. Both of them suffer from conditions that make it hard for their bodies to process sugar, so too much of it is very damaging for them, making them connective tissue in their hooves become inflamed. If that happens too often or too long in equines, it can cause irreparable damage to their feet. Because of this, we are very careful with their diets and maintain a strict trimming schedule with our farrier to ensure that we are keeping them as healthy and comfortable as possible.

Did you know that some goats have wattles on their necks? If you look at Mabel on the left here, you’ll see them. They’re little cartilage filled appendages that hang off the neck, with no real apparent purpose. Some scientists suggest that they might be regressed limbs based on some gene research. All we know for sure is that they’re extra, which fits Mabel perfectly, because this girl is EXTRA in EVERYTHING she does! And thank goodness they’re regressed limbs and not actual ones, because we can’t imagine the havoc she’d cause if they were!

So many updates to share with you all, so I hope you have a minute.

Colin is doing great! He continues to get stronger every day, and now he is able to flip himself sternal (on his chest) when he’s laying on his side! He’s still too weak to stay upright on his own for long, but just being able to do that is a big accomplishment for him. His team feels like he is ready to come home anytime now! However, our little man will be staying there a bit longer, because on Saturday, after being home for less than 24 hours, we had to take Zip back down to Purdue. We’re not yet sure if his antibiotics aren’t working for the bacteria that he has in his bladder or if it just needed more time to work, but Zip was in pain here that we weren’t able to effectively manage, even with the guidance of Dr. Keri and the doctors at Purdue. Now, he’s much more comfortable on morphine, with his buddy Oprah by his side as his team works to get to the bottom of his issues. Once he’s ready to come home, we will pick up Colin, Oprah, and Zip all at the same time.

While all of that was happening, one of our Cornish cross roosters, Titan, is also dealing with some health issues. Titan had some swelling and infection in his foot, a common condition for heavier breeds like he is. Despite managing his diet and ensuring he has soft footing, he still got bumblefoot, so we immediately took him in for treatment. Dr. Wolk was able to relieve the pressure and clean out the infection and Titan was able to rejoin his flock mates. He seems much more comfortable with the antibiotics and pain medication on board. Veterinary care is our leading expense here at the sanctuary. Whether someone is hospitalized at the university or under the care of our primary vet team, we are always striving to ensure that our residents are healthy and that any pain they have is well managed. It’s not uncommon for us to have several different medical cases happening at once, so having trusted veterinarians who are ready with quality care is imperative. Please keep Colin, Zip, and Titan in your thoughts!
