Annually, our shelter finds homes for an average 500 pets & our humane welfare programs aid thousands more.

Did you know that xylitol is very dangerous for dogs and cats? And, did you know that it is found in TONS of foods? 😬
👉 Here's a list of things you need to keep away from your pets:
❌ Baked goods: Low-calorie and diabetic baked goods often use xylitol instead of sugar
❌ Chewing gum: Sugar-free gum, candies and gum drops often contain xylitol
❌ Peanut and nut butters: Some brands, like Go Nuts, Co., Nuts 'N More, and P28, contain xylitol
❌ Yogurt: Some yogurts contain xylitol as a sweetener
❌ Gummy vitamins
❌ Jello

These dogs worked very hard last night greeting diners arriving for dinner at the eight WONDERFUL local restaurants who took part in our annual Dine Out for Cats & Dogs. Each was chosen for his or her extroverted, friendly temperament & they did not disappoint!

🐶🐶Our board members usually work very hard for cats and dogs (and don't forget the rabbits)...
but this weekend a group of them went to a wonderful event celebrating the 20th anniversary of Black Feather Horse Rescue, a Plymouth-based rescue that helps horses, donkeys, and goats. We salute BFHR---and all those in our 'neighborhood' doing the important work of helping animals.

Meet Roman!
Isn't he something?! Roman is quite the specimen, weighing in at just around 100 lbs and the most gentle of giants. His sweet little nibbles and extremely kind nature make him a true gem of a XL dog.
🐾 Roman is around 6-years-old with lots of s***k. He is truly adored by all who have met him. He is excellent with other dogs too! We are unsure how he is with cats.
🐾 Roman was part of a hoarding case and lived with 21 other dogs. Since we have no real history on him and his exposure to children, along with his giant size, we are looking for a home with older kids.
🐾While Roman is working hard and generally gets the concept, we cannot guarantee he is totally housebroken. He needs kind, patient owners to continue the work.
🐾 This amazing dog walks excellent on leash and is an overall true joy.

New internet challenge! Find a cuter puppy then Dotty 🐾
At a whopping 2 lbs, Dotty will be a little thing when full grown. A combo of Chihuahua and Pomeranian, she has a spit fire personality. Dotty has been around dogs, cats and little kids and is a star!
Dotty uses p*e pads roughly 70% of the time. It’s tough to be a tiny gal! Since she is only 8-weeks-old she has not had a ton of exposure to be being outside.
While Dotty could fit into most homes, since she is XS she needs gentle children around and smaller dogs.
This petite princess will look adorable in a purse, fulfilling all millennial goals of having their own Paris Hilton sized pup.

We can't believe Kai is still here!!
Kai has been at the shelter for a month now and before he
came to SAS he was sitting in another shelter for months and we can't understand why!
🐾 A high energy year old pup who would love to go on runs and hikes and walks!
🐾 Loves other playful dogs and kids (although he can be a bit jumpy so sturdy kids are best)
🐾So smart and loving. He was the star of our dog training demo during our open house and did an agility course on the first try!

Police Dog Finn was stabbed in the line of duty protecting his handler PC Dave Wardell. After making a full recovery and returning to duty, Finn and Dave spent years campaigning for "Finn's Law" to give greater protection for service animals across the United Kingdom.

October is a VERY big girl...& sweeter than sweet. 😍
This girl came to us as part of an animal hoarding case--she was living with 21 other huge dogs.
-She is a Cane Corso mix and is probably about 4 years old
-She was shy at first but warmed up quickly.
-She's mellow and sweet
-She walks nicely on leash
-She is working very hard on her house training!
Simply because of her size (92 lbs!) we think she'd be best in an adult household, or one with teens and up. We think she'll make a big dog lover out of almost anyone!
