Upcoming Changes:
There are a few things that will be changing after this kidding season comes to a close. I’ve had to look at a few things objectively that all Breeders have to consider at some point. I appreciate you all, but we have grown too much to continue doing things as we have before. Even reducing our herd numbers, these changes will be necessary to keep everything running more smoothly and give me more time to spend with our goats.
1. Deposits/Payments for unborn kids.
I no longer accept deposits or payments for unborn kids. Nature is too unpredictable and Does are more of a 25/100 chance instead of 50/50 on certain years. When we have kids available, the website and page will be updated.
2. Waiting List
I’m most likely going to scrap it. At certain times of the year, I can get 8 or more calls a day. I ask questions. Fill out a form so I know what you are looking for. I then need to gather all the information when goats are available, put it in a format that I can update, contact you, share that information with you, answer the questions, etc. This takes A LOT of time and effort. I could send out 20 messages and RARELY do I get a response. I have already stopped notifying anyone after 2 non responses. Even a “I’ll pass at this time” is greatly appreciated.
I WILL LIST GOATS ON THE WEBSITE, our FACEBOOK PAGE, and a FEW GOAT GROUPS. I will not make individual waitlist calls anymore.
Even when I give the website link directly to the goats available, people either don’t open it, or don’t read it, and I repeatedly answer questions that I’ve already provided the answer to on the website or the listing. This is very time consuming. During kidding season especially when I’ve been up for weeks.
I want to answer with love and kindness all of your questions, as many times as necessary, but the reality is, I’ve had to start saying it’s on the listing.
I want you to get all the information you need, I am always happy to talk about the goat and answer any questions I haven’t answered before, but I provide a lot of information to begin with and answering information already provided that many times eats up my day.
I also understand that when you want a Pygmy you are hoping for instant gratification, but that is rarely how it works with Pygmy goats. Breeders all over the country are on waiting lists of other breeders and sometimes we ourselves have to wait a year or more for a Pygmy goat.
We, personally, are not a Pygmy goat mill. We do not crank out kids just to have 30 to rehome during the holidays. We match each Doe with what we feel is the best Buck for them and aim for each kid to be even better in conformation and breed standards than their parents. If we don’t have what you are looking for, but I know a reputable breeder that does, I will send you their way, but other than that, it’s a waiting game for you and us both.
3. Wethers
One of my greatest joys is rehoming wethers. They are such an underrated class of goat, and bring so much happiness to the people who have them.
Sadly, this will most likely be the last season I get wethers from other breeders and offer them to my clients.
A few of those reasons are what I spoke about above.
To get these wethers, often requires me to travel to get them, get them microchipped, band them, feed them from 8 weeks to 3 months, give them any veterinary care, take pictures, etc. I don’t pass these costs on to you, and I rarely charge more than I was charged for the goat. Sometimes, I actually got the goat for more than what I quoted you.
We are a business, but I have never looked at raising or rehoming goats as such. Breaking even is rarely achieved. I am completely fine with that, and LOVE LOVE LOVE matching ya’ll with your forever wethers, but because of all the other things I have spoken about and the next thing, I am going to have to conserve some time and energy they would require. That actually breaks my heart more than anything I’ve written so far.
If you are looking for pets, WETHERS ARE BEST. I encourage you to give these amazing fabulous wonderful life brightening boys a home no matter what breeder they come from.
4. Pickup/Delivery
Here’s the thing. Pygmies may or may not require a bit of traveling. READ THAT AS YOU WILL BE TRAVELING TO GET YOUR PYGMY GOAT.
Three hours travel or more may be required.
Some people like me have traveled over a 1000 miles to get one…or several.
Sometimes I can come to you or meet you half way and other times I can not. My instinct is to always say “Yes! I’ll make that trip!” but reality is my husband’s business is 24/7 and we have A LOT of goats and other animals. It’s not fair for me to expect him to work all day and then expect him to come home and do my barn chores, while I am running Pygmy goats all over the place, and most likely am costing us money. He always asks how I have a job and I end up paying. Well…because I do what I love and it’s about the people and Pygmies for me, but reality has to play a part sometimes as well.
It’s also unrealistic, and I am just as guilty for agreeing to it, for me to hold these goats for long periods of time and then when it’s time for their pickup it falls through. Things happen. I get it. Trust me! I understand! You may have waited months for your goat to be available. You were excited. I was excited! We were both excited for you! Then that pesky travel part gets in the way. It is a bummer!
However, if you are from out of town, which you probably are, you commit to a goat, and that goat is ready to roll, then a two week window for pickup will be standard unless we come to a different arrangement on a case by case basis. If the goat is not picked up within the 2 week time frame, it will be relisted. If I try to coordinate with you about a pick up and get no response after 3 days, I am relisting the goat. I want these goats to have the best life possible and that means letting people know they are available as soon as possible.
These are things all breeders deal with. I do understand that and I’ve held off making changes as long as possible, but it’s time. I absolutely want you to find your Perfect Pygmy. We would love to be the one to provide you with your Pygmy. So we hope you understand and wish you Pygmy love as we make a few managerial changes to the business side of things so we can do and enjoy more of the on hand Pygmy things.
