I realized I haven’t updated about Ellie or River.

Ellie is doing wonderful. Since I split the girls into two main groups again, Spice Girls and the Darlings, she is with the darlings in Gen Pop. The Darlings, as an entire group, are less spicy than some of our Herd Hanchos and we felt Ellie would have a milder transition back into the larger group with the darlings. My milder mannered adult Does such as Winter also stayed with the Darlings.

One thing I love about Pygmy goats is that even if they have a stronger sassy frassy personality, they are not mean to people. But Ellie. Ellie has no sass. She is like pure cane sugar you put in tea to make it sweet sweet sweet! We are very happy she is toddling along doing well back in the herd.

River is also doing great and almost ready to return back to the herd after her c section, but I’d like to make sure she is completely healed with no chance of reopening her surgical site. River is a very sociable character. She is always up in the mix and she would definitely be happy to get spicy with the other group. She and Pecan get to battle it out for now. Make no mistake though. Pecan is a gangsta and normally wins. 😂😂😂😂

It’s been a busy couple of days, but things are going back to normal. Well normal for us. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😂
We had visitors and thrilled to say Louis and Hamilton will be going to their new home at the end of July. The twins and Nova are little spunky monkies having the time of their lives in the nursery. At the end of the month Jolie will move with the darlings. I’ll probably keep Blush in the nursery a little longer, but Shelby and Jaylynn will go back full time with the older girls and Jolie and Blush will officially be Doeling Darlings. I haven’t even considered letting go of any of the kids yet. I will most likely let this crop of kids grow out for awhile here before I make any kind of decisions on their future. It’s so nice having a nursery group to enjoy at the moment.

Maybeline is doing well. She has moved to Preggy pop so I can watch her on camera, because you know I stalk these girls constantly.

We’ve got a few girls in the breeding pen with J$, Turner, and Tiger Eye. Thankfully even though it’s hot it’s not the scorch the earth drought temperatures we had last summer so every one is handling the summer nicely so far.

The bucks have all moved into the Darling Dorm permanently. That’s going to smell awesome during rut since it’s right next to the house, but I can’t smell so…😂😂😂
They have managed to figure out the alleyway that runs in the back yard down the side of the house to the front pasture. Something the girls never mastered. Except Ben. Ben gets himself out there, it rains, all the bucks come back but him. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Then he is hollering at me like come get me. So…of course I do and he gets to take a short cut. I feel like I’m getting played a bit. 😂😂😂

We still have three wethers available. Waylon, Kaycee, and Cory. I have no doubt their perfect people will find them when the time is right.

Hoping everyone is doing well. If we haven’t heard from you in awhile. Check in. We’d love to know what’s Goat’n on with you! 💙💙💙

Mater was our very first Pymgy goat. He didn’t want to interact with us at all, but he had a hilarious personality. When he was younger he hopped around like Peppy Le Pew and claimed the lawn mower as his throne.
He still doesn’t want love and cuddles, but he is comfortable with us being around and scratching the top of his head while he eats. His coat is always nice year round, loves the ladies, and gets along well with a group of bucks.
He is no longer in our breeding program, but would make someone a nice buck for their herd. If interested, call, message, or text.

Ellie update:
Ok so we went to the vet this morning did the ultrasounds and X-rays again and…a kid was verified at her first two previous ultrasounds. From February to May there was a kid, so the dates are accurate, but the kid’s growth rate was concerning and raised flags in May. There is no sign of a kid today after Ellie fasted yesterday.

Ellie is healthy, showing no signs of distress or that anything is amiss. Doing a c section or trying to force her into “labor” seems like unnecessary procedures that would cause more harm than good considering her current state of being. Especially since we can’t even see a kid from the images.

So… we are sad to have lost the kid, but as always, happy the mom is doing great. There is no reason to believe Ellie couldn’t be bred again and go on to have more healthy kids like her twins Tante Chels and QT17.

Ya’ll know I retire these girls faster than you can say “retired” if I have one tiny doubt they would go on to successfully kid in the future. I don’t have that reasonable doubt with Ellie.

I do think, after to discussing kidding trends with some vets in our area that the brutal summer did play a part in some of our kidding issues. They have had some interesting deliveries or stories about what other animals have gone through this breeding season, not just goats. If the weather we have been having lately is an indication of this summer, we will be having the complete opposite of a drought. So, we continue to do EVERYTHING we can to ensure our goats health and we’ll see what next season brings.

We are SO THANKFUL that all mom’s, no matter what the difficulty, are happy and healthy and to have had Mambo, Blush, Nova, Renard, and Reese this season. Maybeline will be last to kid next month then we get to rest for awhile and enjoy watching the kids grow.

Dr. Whittington will be here this afternoon and we will ultrasound our 3 in Preggy Pop for their 45 day check and Maybeline (just to make sure all is well with her).

It might never be a dull day around here, but right now, Ellie is happy and healthy, so it’s a good day.

I am HORRIBLE at Calendar math. Especially when I’ve got to figure out when to breed a goat. I don’t want to have summer kiddings like this year. We have shows in Sept, Oct, Nov, Mar, Apr, and Nationals in June. I’ve got to figure out what date the doe kidded, 3 months of weaning, then where 8 months after that falls for when I can breed the Doe again and Lord help me if that falls on a Month that I end up kidding at the wrong time. Not to mention if she didn’t have the kid, the kid was born sleeping, etc. I’ve got spread sheets, I’ve got notes, I’m doing star charts (just kidding, I’m not doing star charts). I’m looking at kidding calculators, I’m typing in what’s 3 months after this and 5 years after that and I don’t do it once. I do it for EVERY Doe that is in my breeding program and I’m looking ahead to see if it messes me up for the next year. I finally found a calendar I like on excel, but it was still taking me forever to look up all the could be scenario dates. At 1:30 am I decided to give Siri a try.

“Hey Siri, what’s 3 months after…”
Bruh… Game Changer!
I’ve still got several resources and I’m still making sure things are correct but talking to Siri is magical. She (he on my phone) loves calendar math!!! Now if I could just get Siri to enter all the dates on my excel calendar…

In today’s episode of WTH…

Ellie never kidded, never bagged up (but Pie didn’t either), no signs of labor, and we are on day 150 something. We did ultrasound her the day after River’s c section and saw a heart beat, but Whittington our vet was like…are you SURE that she’s almost due????? Unless there was some Free W***y loving I wasn’t made aware of, those were definitely the dates.

I actually slept in my own bed last night because I was 100% confident no kids were coming, but I didn’t want to go into the weekend blind and not have vet access if things took a hard right. Thankfully, we have an AMAZING goat vet and he said come on over. I loaded Ellie into the Enclave, she did not think this was a fantastic idea, and headed on down the road.

Whittington ultrasounded her in the back of the car and was like…uhhhhhh…so we brought her inside and ultrasounded her again. We were all still…uhhhhhh…so we got Xrays. We are still…uhhhhhhhh…(making scratching head motions and scrunching up our faces).

She absolutely was/is bred. Her uterus is huge. There are some ribs (see the blue circle), but we couldn’t find a heart beat. Is the kid still alive and the view is obstructed and there was a break in Buck??? Is she absorbing the kid? Are we mummifying a kid? Too hard to tell at the moment.

We will fast Ellie on Sunday, then bring her back first thing Monday and try again on ultrasound and X-rays to see which direction we are headed in.

Ellie is happy as a clam. Eating, drinking, and looking cute.

I tell ya’ll what. These girls…
We fight hard as hell for these kids if that’s what it takes (looking at you Renard), but if a healthy mom is the only best scenario outcome then that’s what I’m hoping for.
In the least, at the moment, I can rest easy that she is doing fine and I can get some much needed sleep over the weekend because my own well being has taken a huge hit this last month and it’s time to recharge. This kidding season has been way too all over the map for me. I’m going to have to change our farm motto from “Never a Dull Day,” to “Nothing to see here folks.” 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Upcoming Changes:

There are a few things that will be changing after this kidding season comes to a close. I’ve had to look at a few things objectively that all Breeders have to consider at some point. I appreciate you all, but we have grown too much to continue doing things as we have before. Even reducing our herd numbers, these changes will be necessary to keep everything running more smoothly and give me more time to spend with our goats.

1. Deposits/Payments for unborn kids.
I no longer accept deposits or payments for unborn kids. Nature is too unpredictable and Does are more of a 25/100 chance instead of 50/50 on certain years. When we have kids available, the website and page will be updated.

2. Waiting List
I’m most likely going to scrap it. At certain times of the year, I can get 8 or more calls a day. I ask questions. Fill out a form so I know what you are looking for. I then need to gather all the information when goats are available, put it in a format that I can update, contact you, share that information with you, answer the questions, etc. This takes A LOT of time and effort. I could send out 20 messages and RARELY do I get a response. I have already stopped notifying anyone after 2 non responses. Even a “I’ll pass at this time” is greatly appreciated.

I WILL LIST GOATS ON THE WEBSITE, our FACEBOOK PAGE, and a FEW GOAT GROUPS. I will not make individual waitlist calls anymore.

Even when I give the website link directly to the goats available, people either don’t open it, or don’t read it, and I repeatedly answer questions that I’ve already provided the answer to on the website or the listing. This is very time consuming. During kidding season especially when I’ve been up for weeks.

I want to answer with love and kindness all of your questions, as many times as necessary, but the reality is, I’ve had to start saying it’s on the listing.

I want you to get all the information you need, I am always happy to talk about the goat and answer any questions I haven’t answered before, but I provide a lot of information to begin with and answering information already provided that many times eats up my day.

I also understand that when you want a Pygmy you are hoping for instant gratification, but that is rarely how it works with Pygmy goats. Breeders all over the country are on waiting lists of other breeders and sometimes we ourselves have to wait a year or more for a Pygmy goat.

We, personally, are not a Pygmy goat mill. We do not crank out kids just to have 30 to rehome during the holidays. We match each Doe with what we feel is the best Buck for them and aim for each kid to be even better in conformation and breed standards than their parents. If we don’t have what you are looking for, but I know a reputable breeder that does, I will send you their way, but other than that, it’s a waiting game for you and us both.

3. Wethers
One of my greatest joys is rehoming wethers. They are such an underrated class of goat, and bring so much happiness to the people who have them.

Sadly, this will most likely be the last season I get wethers from other breeders and offer them to my clients.
A few of those reasons are what I spoke about above.

To get these wethers, often requires me to travel to get them, get them microchipped, band them, feed them from 8 weeks to 3 months, give them any veterinary care, take pictures, etc. I don’t pass these costs on to you, and I rarely charge more than I was charged for the goat. Sometimes, I actually got the goat for more than what I quoted you.

We are a business, but I have never looked at raising or rehoming goats as such. Breaking even is rarely achieved. I am completely fine with that, and LOVE LOVE LOVE matching ya’ll with your forever wethers, but because of all the other things I have spoken about and the next thing, I am going to have to conserve some time and energy they would require. That actually breaks my heart more than anything I’ve written so far.

If you are looking for pets, WETHERS ARE BEST. I encourage you to give these amazing fabulous wonderful life brightening boys a home no matter what breeder they come from.

4. Pickup/Delivery
Here’s the thing. Pygmies may or may not require a bit of traveling. READ THAT AS YOU WILL BE TRAVELING TO GET YOUR PYGMY GOAT.
Three hours travel or more may be required.
Some people like me have traveled over a 1000 miles to get one…or several.

Sometimes I can come to you or meet you half way and other times I can not. My instinct is to always say “Yes! I’ll make that trip!” but reality is my husband’s business is 24/7 and we have A LOT of goats and other animals. It’s not fair for me to expect him to work all day and then expect him to come home and do my barn chores, while I am running Pygmy goats all over the place, and most likely am costing us money. He always asks how I have a job and I end up paying. Well…because I do what I love and it’s about the people and Pygmies for me, but reality has to play a part sometimes as well.

It’s also unrealistic, and I am just as guilty for agreeing to it, for me to hold these goats for long periods of time and then when it’s time for their pickup it falls through. Things happen. I get it. Trust me! I understand! You may have waited months for your goat to be available. You were excited. I was excited! We were both excited for you! Then that pesky travel part gets in the way. It is a bummer!

However, if you are from out of town, which you probably are, you commit to a goat, and that goat is ready to roll, then a two week window for pickup will be standard unless we come to a different arrangement on a case by case basis. If the goat is not picked up within the 2 week time frame, it will be relisted. If I try to coordinate with you about a pick up and get no response after 3 days, I am relisting the goat. I want these goats to have the best life possible and that means letting people know they are available as soon as possible.

These are things all breeders deal with. I do understand that and I’ve held off making changes as long as possible, but it’s time. I absolutely want you to find your Perfect Pygmy. We would love to be the one to provide you with your Pygmy. So we hope you understand and wish you Pygmy love as we make a few managerial changes to the business side of things so we can do and enjoy more of the on hand Pygmy things.

What are the chances of getting stung by a wasp two days in row in almost exactly the same spot of my calf when trying to reclaim the playhouse from vines and weeds behind one of the blue houses? Pretty high! 😂😂😂 It was worth it though!

All the blue houses are functioning again. It absolutely astonishes me the weird weeds and vines that grow here. The nursery yard had these gigantic things I don’t remember ever seeing before. I keep looking at my planters in my front yard and those vines are capturing them too. If it was blackberries, I’d be thrilled.

Bea and Fyre are spending a romantic evening with Johnny Cash. Might be some Cash kids in the near future by the looks of things. We are already hoping he bred his two girls last month. Cornelia gets Tiger Eye all to herself, but she isn’t seeing stars in her eyes for him just yet.

I’m hoping to get ultrasounds next week on the three girls already in Preggy Pop. I was going to wait till September to breed the other three since we were hand breeding without the blue houses, but happy to give them the opportunity now so we can find out if everyone took before September. We can retry again then if necessary. If they didn’t take in September then that would be a wrap. No more summer kids for me! Last summer was so brutal that almost none of the girls took even in September and we had to put them together again much later than we wanted to. This next season, we welcome all the kids by April or we have a nice quiet few months till the next round.

The twins are spending their first night in the nursery with the rest of the moms and kids. They were hippity hoppity in the freshly mowed nursery yard this evening and have found their napping spot.

The Bucks in the dorm made their way through the alley in the back yard almost to the front pasture. Pretty impressive because the Does hadn’t managed that before them. Hoping to get the two front pastures bush hogged tomorrow before the rain comes later this week. It’s been nice having the ground dry out.

My personal goal tomorrow is to work on Gen Pop’s yard with my new favorite thing, the BEAST! That was the best money I have spent in a long time. The girls will be so happy once it’s done and they can be porch queens on the chicken coop since the evenings have been nice and cool.

Pending pickup the following are now no longer available:
Tilly, Tante Chels, Biscuit, Dani, and Whiskey.
We are happy the Does are going as a group since they are already bonded.

We still have a few great bucks available, a young wether (possibly two more). I am considering letting FyreWalker and Zombi go as wethers, and some lovely pet only Does that are older, but would make great companions and look darn cute in your pasture. These Does/Bucks/Wethers I’ve been holding onto simply because they brighten our day tremendously when we interact with them, but if this weather trend continues I’ve simply got to downsize more.

Wethers/Does not currently on the market but I would consider letting go:

Show quality:
Fyre Walker (wether)
Zombi (Buckling but could be a wether)
* These two would make a great pair

Pet quality:
Tator (wether)
Ritz (wether)
* These two would make a great pair

Older girls with lots of personality that would brighten your day:
Jaden (once she weans her kids, she could be bred again, but would make a great pet as well)
River (PET ONLY)
Sadie (PET ONLY)
Brown Betty (PET ONLY)
Tatum (PET ONLY)
Teddie (PET ONLY)

That hurt my heart just to type those names, but if they found a good home, I would be glad for them.

Renard is officially a Ninja N***y and is no longer on the danger list. That boy loves his milk shakes! Of course Reese didn’t nurse as much today. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ They got to go in the middle lands pasture for about an hour since it cooled down this evening. Reese thought the cinder block was the best thing in the world! She’s an easy one to shop for at Christmas. 😂😂😂 They are both hoping and bopping around having a grand time when they aren’t cuddled up in the corner together.

River got a little excitement today because the nursery girls spent some time in the Alleyway while we were cleaning Ellie’s pen. Pie went from being one of my shyest girls to really holding her own. Pregnancy and being a mom has been great for her. She gave River a run for her money. River could probably go back to Gen pop now since her stitches are nonexistent, but I’ll wait to reintroduce her till they are in the pasture. I prefer wide range capability for herd reentry. Although Gen Pop’s stall is large, it turns into a bunch of mean girls herd situation when it should be more of a mean one or two girls situation. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

You ever wonder how that works? You know there are the top tier, the bottom tier, and the middle tier goats of the herd, but do you think it’s like class ratings? Like is Tator number 12 or 32 and do they know it?

I would have not thought Holly was the herd leader, but since she left it has really changed the dynamics of the herd. She wasn’t necessarily top girl, honestly I would have said she was in the middle of the pack, but she was the one who always went to pasture first even if there were puddles. Now that she’s gone it’s an act of Congress to get them to go. My top stall girls are absolutely not intrepid explorers. Maybe River will take up the Pasture mantle. Hmmmmm….

When it comes to heating bottles for the kids I’ve tried several things.
1. Heat water on the stove.
2. Heat water in the microwave then put the bottle in the hot water.
3. Baby bottle warmer.
4. A small crockpot filled with water and left on warm for as long as I am bottle feeding (topping off the water as the level drops)

The small crockpot has been the easiest to warm a bottle relatively quickly. I check the temperature using a cooking thermometer.

HOWEVER, I have spotted a gadget at the shows where people heated their bottle in a bucket with this wand thing. AND I WANTED ONE! I have hunted for it forever using different search names with no success. Tonight I FINALLY found the note I made with the name brand of the wand.

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Ya’ll! It is not a livestock bottle warmer! It’s an immersion sous vide machine. I would have NEVER found it with my searches. With ALL the cooking shows I watch, I can’t believe I haven’t seen this gadget used before.

I’d prefer not to have to bottle feed, but I do want to try this gadget out badly, so of course I ordered it, and…if I ever want to cook something in a tiny bucket whirlpool bath (this will not happen) all I need to do is run to the barn. 😂😂😂😂😂

Now that I can breathe and actually appreciate watching the kids hop and play and explore, I got some good pictures of Reese.
She is a Black Agouti with very little white around her eyes and not a lot of white on her crown like Renard, but she is a nice looking little Doeling. I wondered if either of the kids would have the peculiar Brown Agouti spot like Tator has on his back, but I haven’t spotted one yet. It wouldn’t have been uncommon for Tator to be a Black Agouti with extra white, but apparently Jaden’s Brown Agouti genes really wanted to show giving him that unique Brown Agouti birthmark about the size of a silver dollar.

Renard takes after his Dad, Goo, a Grey Agouti, and has the cutest waddles (from Jaden) with white frosted tips. He also has a partial belly band on his left side like his Momma.
