🩺 It’s the clotting that’s the issue. When a dog gets an aural hematoma—a swelling in the ear caused by broken blood vessels—it’s the clotting over time that causes what we call “cauliflower ear.” That thick, crinkled look isn’t just cosmetic; it can cause permanent discomfort and trouble for your pup if left untreated.

💉 Here’s why draining the ear matters. Aural hematomas need to be drained, and the ear must be allowed to keep draining. If it doesn’t, the blood clots and hardens, leading to scar tissue that distorts the ear permanently. This isn’t just about looks; it’s about your dog’s comfort and long-term ear health.

🐶 Don’t forget the bigger picture. Aural hematomas often happen because of an underlying issue—like ear infections, allergies, or excessive head shaking. If you’re only treating the swelling but not what’s causing it, you’re likely to see the problem again. Addressing these root causes is just as important as treating the hematoma itself.

Keep an eye on your pup’s ears, and if you notice swelling, act fast. The Waggin’ Train is all about keeping tails wagging and ears healthy.

⚠️Have you seen these on your elderly dog?

🐾 Understanding Sebaceous Adenomas in Dogs
“Sebaceous adenoma” refers to a common, benign tumor often found in older dogs. These growths originate from the sebaceous glands, which produce the oil (sebum) that keeps your dog’s skin and coat healthy. Typically appearing as small, raised lumps, they can vary in color from white to pink and may resemble warts.

🦴 Why Are They Common in Senior Dogs?
As dogs age, their skin undergoes changes, including the development of sebaceous adenomas. Certain breeds, such as Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, and Poodles, may be more predisposed to these growths. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, genetics and the natural aging process play significant roles.

💉 Are Sebaceous Adenomas Dangerous?
Generally, sebaceous adenomas are harmless and don’t pose a threat to your dog’s health. They are non-cancerous and often don’t require treatment. However, it’s essential to monitor these growths for any changes in size, color, or behavior. If a lump becomes bothersome or shows signs of infection, intervention may be necessary.

👩‍⚕️ Consult Your Veterinarian
Even though sebaceous adenomas are typically benign, it’s crucial to have any new lumps or bumps examined by your veterinarian. A professional evaluation ensures an accurate diagnosis and helps rule out other conditions that might require attention. Your vet can provide guidance on monitoring the growth and advise if any action is needed.

🩹 What If the Adenoma Bleeds?
If a sebaceous adenoma starts bleeding regularly, it could indicate irritation or injury, possibly from your dog scratching or licking the area. In such cases, it’s important to consult your veterinarian. They may recommend treatment options, which could include surgical removal to prevent further issues and ensure your dog’s comfort.

⚠️Hot Spots on Dogs: What You Need to Know

🐾 What Are Hot Spots?
Hot spots, also called acute moist dermatitis, are red, irritated patches of skin that can appear out of nowhere. They’re often itchy, painful, and downright annoying for your dog.

🔥 How Do They Happen?
Hot spots usually start with something small—like an itch your dog scratches or licks too much. Excessive licking traps moisture, and bacteria love that warm, damp environment. Before you know it, a little irritation turns into a big problem.

Some common causes include:
• 🦴 Allergies (food or environmental)
• 🦟 Bug bites or stings
• 🐕 Poor grooming or matted fur
• 🧼 Skin infections
• 😟 Stress or boredom

🩹 What Can You Do?
If you catch a hot spot early, here’s how to help:
1. 🧽 Clean the Area: Trim the fur around the spot and gently clean it with a mild antiseptic or a vet-recommended cleanser.
2. 💨 Keep It Dry: Moisture makes hot spots worse, so pat it dry and keep your pup from licking it.
3. 🛡️ Use a Barrier: A dog-safe antibiotic cream or spray can help protect the area. Consider using an e-collar if your pup won’t stop licking.

🏥 When to Visit the Vet
Hot spots can quickly escalate if they’re not treated. You’ll want to see your vet if:
• 🚨 The hot spot is spreading or getting worse.
• 😢 Your dog seems uncomfortable or is in pain.
• 🦠 You notice a foul odor, swelling, or pus.

✅ Prevention is Key
Regular grooming, keeping your dog dry, and addressing allergies or skin sensitivities early can help prevent hot spots from starting in the first place.

At The Waggin’ Train, we know your dog’s health is a top priority. Spotting issues early and knowing when to get help can make all the difference in keeping your pup happy and comfortable.

🐾 Yeast Infections in Elderly Dogs: What You Need to Know

Yeast infections in a dog’s ears are common, especially in senior pups. 🐕 They can cause itching, discomfort, and irritation. Here’s how to identify the problem and help your dog feel better.

🦴 Why Do Yeast Infections Happen?
• 🌊 Moisture: Water trapped in floppy ears or after swimming creates the perfect environment for yeast to grow.
• 🌸 Allergies: Food or environmental allergies inflame the ears, making them prone to infection.
• 🐕‍🦺 Weakened Immune System: Older dogs often have weaker immune systems, which makes them more vulnerable.

🐕 Signs to Watch For
• 🐾 Excessive scratching at the ears.
• 🐶 Head shaking or tilting to one side.
• 🔴 Red, swollen ear canals.
• 🤢 A funky odor or dark discharge from the ear.

🛠 How to Help
• 🩺 Visit the Vet: Get a proper diagnosis to confirm it’s a yeast infection.
• 🧴 Clean Gently: Use a vet-recommended ear cleaner to remove debris.
• 💊 Treat It: Your vet may prescribe antifungal drops or ointments.
• 🐾 Tackle the Cause: If allergies or moisture are the problem, address them to prevent future infections.

🚫 Preventing Future Infections
• 🛁 Dry their ears after baths or swimming to avoid trapped moisture.
• ✂️ Keep hair around their ears trimmed for better airflow.
• 👀 Check their ears weekly for signs of redness, discharge, or odor.

Keeping your dog’s ears clean and healthy is key to preventing yeast infections. 💙 If you notice any signs, don’t wait—consult your vet.

Start Early: Why Your Puppy Needs a Groomer

Getting your puppy used to professional grooming early is one of the best things you can do for their health and happiness. 🐾 Here’s why it matters—and what happens if you wait too long.

The Benefits of Starting Early

✔️ They get used to it. Puppies exposed to grooming early adapt to being handled. This makes future grooming sessions and even vet visits less stressful.
✔️ It keeps them healthy. Grooming isn’t just about looking good. It helps keep their coat and skin healthy, prevents matting, and can catch skin issues or parasites early.
✔️ It builds confidence. Starting young helps your puppy feel more relaxed and comfortable with regular grooming.

The Downsides of Waiting Too Long

❌ Stress and anxiety. Dogs introduced to grooming later often struggle with the process, leading to fear and behavioral problems.
❌ Health issues. Neglected grooming can lead to painful mats, infections, or undetected health problems.
❌ Challenging behavior. Older dogs new to grooming are often resistant to being handled, making it tougher on both the dog and the groomer.

Tips to Get Started

🐶 Start brushing and handling your puppy at home early to get them used to the process.
🐶 Book their first professional grooming session during puppyhood.
🐶 Stick to a regular schedule—it’s easier for your pup and keeps their coat healthy.

At The Waggin’ Train, we make grooming a positive and safe experience for your pup. 🐾 Our expert groomers are the best in the business—they know how to help your dog feel calm, comfortable, and cared for, whether it’s their first visit or their fiftieth.

Bring your puppy to The Waggin’ Train today, and we’ll help set them up for a lifetime of healthy grooming habits. Trust us—your pup (and their shiny coat) will thank you!

⚠️ PSA Dog Owners! Fighters aren’t the only ones who can get cauliflower ear—your dog can too.

👂Dogs’ ears are full of tiny blood vessels, and excessive head shaking or scratching—often caused by itching or irritation—can cause these vessels to burst. This leads to painful hematomas, which are large pockets of blood that can swell up inside the ear flap. Direct trauma to the ear can also cause this condition.

If left untreated, the blood inside the hematoma can harden, calcifying into firm, unsightly lumps that are uncomfortable for your dog and often permanent. While this may seem like just a cosmetic issue, it can be painful and interfere with their everyday comfort.

If you notice swelling or unusual lumps on your dog’s ears, don’t wait—take them to the vet. Treatment typically involves draining the blood and a minor procedure to keep the ear draining while the tissue heals. The sooner you act, the better for your dog’s health and happiness!

Keep an eye out, and give those floppy or pointy ears some love.

⚠️Make Sure Your Groomer Isn’t Leaving Long Hair Inside the Ears!

That fluffy ear hair might look cute, but if it’s not trimmed regularly, it can cause some serious problems. For breeds like Poodles, Shih Tzus, and Cocker Spaniels, long or matted ear hair can block airflow, trap moisture, and even lead to painful infections.

Here’s how to keep your pup’s ears healthy:

🐶 Ask Your Groomer: Ensure they’re trimming inside the ears properly. Skipping this step can cause major discomfort for your dog.

📚 Know Your Breed: Research your pup’s specific grooming needs or ask your vet for tips.

👀 Check Between Trims: Watch for matting, redness, or anything unusual in your dog’s ears to catch problems early.

Healthy ears mean a happy, tail-waggin’ dog! Don’t let ear hair become a problem.

😂 This one had us all cracking up at the clinic yesterday!

This little calico kitten was abandoned, but two of our amazing clients rescued her and brought her in for a checkup. Everything looked great—except for a little hookworm, but no worries—that’ll be an easy fix! 👍
