🐶 Newborn puppies grow fast — really fast!

🍼 Most puppies will double their birth weight in just the first week of life thanks to near-constant nursing and lots of cozy sleep.

💛 That quick growth tells us they’re getting the nutrition they need and that their bodies are developing right on schedule.

👩‍⚕️ During newborn exams, we track each puppy’s weight to make sure they’re gaining steadily and thriving from day one!

🐶 Sometimes even the tiniest puppies can come into the world with an unwanted hitchhiker!

🐛 Roundworms are one of the most common parasites in dogs, and the tricky part is that a mother can carry dormant larvae in her body for years.

🍼 During pregnancy, those larvae can “wake up” and travel through the placenta — or even later through her milk — to the puppies.

💚 This is why regular deworming for both mom and pups is so important! A healthy start means healthy growth, happy tails, and fewer tummy troubles.

🩺🐾 Routine Care, Lifelong Health

Every check-up gives us a chance to catch small issues before they become big ones. Listening to the heart, checking the teeth, feeling for lumps. It all adds up to keeping tails wagging and pets feeling their best.
💚 Preventive care is the best kind of care.

🦷🐶 DOG DENTAL CARE: MORE THAN JUST FRESH BREATH!

Did you know 80% of dogs over age 3 have dental disease? It’s one of the most common (and most ignored) health problems we see at The Waggin’ Train. Here’s what every pet parent should know:
😷 Bad breath isn’t “normal” – It’s often the first sign of gum disease or infection. Bacteria in the mouth can travel to the heart, kidneys, and liver.

🪛 Extractions are common when disease is advanced.
Severely damaged teeth often need to be pulled to prevent ongoing pain or infection. Professional dental exams remove plaque under the gumline—where disease hides.

🪥 Brushing really matters – Even 2–3 times a week can cut down tartar and prevent infection. Small breeds are especially vulnerable due to crowded teeth. If your dog has a tiny mouth and big breath, it’s time for a check-up!

Book your dog’s dental exam today—because a healthy mouth = a healthier pup! 💛

🐶🪱 Why A Puppy’s Belly Might Look Bloated

This little one came in with a swollen belly, a common sign of roundworms, one of the most frequent parasites in puppies. These worms live in the intestines and can make young dogs bloated, tired, and underweight even if they eat normally.

💚 Regular deworming and early check-ups are the best ways to keep growing puppies healthy and full of energy.

🐶🍼Keeping a Litter Healthy

🐾 A mother dog’s pregnancy lasts about 63 days, and litter sizes can range anywhere from one to twelve puppies, depending on her breed and size.

💚 Newborn puppies can’t see or hear for the first two weeks of life, they rely completely on their mother’s warmth and milk to survive.

🦴 The mom’s body produces colostrum in the first few days after giving birth, which is rich in antibodies that help protect her puppies from disease.

🩺 Puppies begin to open their eyes and ears around 10–14 days old, and they start walking, playing, and exploring shortly after.

🐕 By the time they reach six to eight weeks, they’re ready for their first vet check-ups, deworming, and vaccines, setting the foundation for healthy, happy lives.

🐾💚 Focusing on Comfort and Care

This sweet dog came in with a large melanoma growth on the forelimb. Because of its size and location, removing it would cause more harm than good — so our focus is now on quality of life care.

Every patient deserves comfort, dignity, and love. With pain management, close monitoring, and gentle daily care, we make sure this pup stays happy and comfortable for as long as possible.

💚 Veterinary care isn’t always about curing — sometimes it’s about caring, every single day.

Why Some Dogs Keep Their Dewclaws and Others Don’t

🐾🐶 What Are Dewclaws?Dewclaws are the small extra toes found higher up on your dog’s leg. Most dogs have them on their front legs, and some breeds also have them on the back. They may look small, but they serve a purpose in helping dogs grip and stabilize when running or turning.

✂️ Why Some Are RemovedMany breeders and owners choose to have dewclaws removed shortly after birth to prevent them from getting caught or torn during play, hunting, or grooming. In some breeds, especially working dogs, removal is common to reduce the risk of future injury.

🧼 The Importance of TrimmingFor dogs that still have dewclaws, trimming them regularly is important. Because these nails don’t touch the ground, they don’t wear down naturally and can grow in a curve that may cut into the skin.

💚 A Simple Step for ComfortKeeping dewclaws trimmed and healthy prevents pain and infection, helping your pup stay comfortable and ready to play.

🩺🐾 Listening for What You Can’t See

During every check-up, we use a stethoscope to listen to your pet’s heart and lungs. This simple step can reveal early signs of conditions like murmurs, arrhythmias, or respiratory issues long before symptoms appear.

💚 Even healthy pets benefit from regular monitoring — small changes from one visit to the next can make a big difference in catching problems early.
