Pinks and red dominate the Valentines Day bouquets this week but for the nonconformist we added the dreamy orange and pinks. Orange is my favorite flower color and I’m tickled with the fringe Orange Passion tulips that develop pink tones.

The anemones are creeping in quite early this year. I’ve posted a handful of 12” shorty bunches on the wholesale site. Sn**ch them up for this weekend. These cool flowers have great vase life and wash away the winter blues.

Round 3 seed sowing of Lisianthus. It has been a blessing having 2 sets of young eyes handling all of my seeding this year. San has graduated to a rapid seeder. Her speed is crazy! I need to take a final count but I think we are close to 3500 plants this year for our little farm. I made a big push with loads of pinks and peaches. I wish I had done more whites but there’s always next year. Here’s to loads of frilly babies in 2025.

Well hey there. The anemones are short and petite and are showing up. Anemones always start off short and then mature into long thick stems with beautiful blooms that are the perfect size for design. My cold treatment experiment is right on track for a Valentine’s Day crop. If you are farmers and want to know this process, look at Ednie’s Anemone cut flower catalogue. Apparently a chilling period will speed up the bloom time to 45 days following planting. I soaked and chilled at the end of September, planted in trays at the end of October, and field planted at Thanksgiving. 📸 Rainbow Pastel Violet Purchased through Ball

There is no set recipe in farming. Seed packets, bulb directions, and corm instructions must all be tweaked to meet your individual calendar. Social media produces a lot of FOMO but if you are a new farmer my best advice would be to dance to your own beat. I will say that it feels good to know what my vision is and instinctually fall into that schedule. I wanted my ranunculus and anemones earlier this year so I got them going a bit sooner. I did the same with snapdragons. I wanted them early again so I started them Sept 1. But I decided I wanted more a bit later so we did 2 more successions. Every farmer does things differently. Watch, observe and formulate your plan. A blind copycat rarely finds success because every farm, area, and farmer is different. And always ask questions. 📸 Italian Ranunculus

I only really worry about the ranunculus in the farm when it gets cold. We are sitting in the 20s at night in Atlanta which these plants can take just fine but we cover to herd them a bit faster toward blooms. Ranunculus are said to be cold tolerant to 28 degrees but I’m sure they can take little bit more cold. This year I chose to do a double layer of frost cloth (Ag 30) in lieu of 1 layer of frost cloth and a layer of plastic. Lawd the plastic up and down and up and down. There was little flexibility in leaving it dropped in a warmer day. Those low tunnels could stroke out at 90 degrees in hours. The other concern is protecting the plants from too much water. Ranunculus will rot in a hot minute. Fortunately I’m confident that the double layer is shedding enough water to keep these divas happy. Fast forward to March /April and we will have a flower explosion. It’s a tight walked journey. # #

This post is for all of my farmer friends and florists. This is the best book ever. It is a textbook of floral standards written by farmers for farmers. But I would extend it to florists as well who buy local product. I would go as far as to say it is the Bible to the cut flower community. It answers questions such as stem length, harvest stage, multiple stages of harvest, conditioning. This is so important bc it helps establish pricing. Your crops might exceed standards and therefore command a premium price or they fall short and need to be remarketed. The dahlia section alone is worth the $80. They tested varieties at different stages of harvest to see which ones can be cut early and still open. Blown away and thank me later. I’ll post the link on stories with some page snippets.

A few years ago I decided to take a course on how to force tulips in the winter. How hard could it be? 🤣 Fast forward to today and I can attest that they can slide sideways easily. The greatest challenge in the south is our humidity. Unmanaged it will literally break your crop. I decided last year to abandon growing hydroponically because of my inability to properly manage humidity conditions. Google stem topple. This year I finally had enough crates to soil plant all of my tulips. I’ve found there is less failure grown in soil and that the product is superior. Tall, thick stems. I also decided to push the crop from January to February. I need the breather and the pause. I’m excited that we will start moving the first crates to the greenhouse next week. I’m working on presales for my wholesale clients and will announce Valentine’s Day options in the coming weeks. I’m really excited about this year. 📸Tulip Largo. 2024 was a wild ride. I was lifted up in the spring when I discovered how to really sell wholesale in volumes. I was astounded with the amount of stems I was able to move on my small farm. I was shaking my tail feather. And then the record heat of June baked my dahlia tubers like potatoes causing me to lose 75% of my crop. Then I had my tail between my legs. But in this joy and disappointment I learned so much and I can be even better. 2025 looks off to a good start. I’m dreaming about my anemones because I think I’m going to hit Valentine’s Day. Last year I experimented and was later than I wanted. This year I experimented again and my gut tells me I’m going to nail it. The anemones are budding up and I hope February is swimming in blooms. Fingers crossed and tail up!! 📸 2024 Anemone crop.
