Echo is a 5-6 year old (estimated), female Cane Corso. She is adoptable through Wiley’s Wish animal rescue. Echo was pulled from the stanislaus shelter, and was clearly used as a breeding bitch. I’ve been fostering her for about a month now and she has been a delightful dog. She is cautious with strangers at first but quickly turns into a puddle of love. She never gets tired of petting. She loves laying down in the water on a hot day and blowing bubbles. She is balanced with other dogs. Doesn’t want to play, non-reactive, ignores them. She is a very quick learner, walks nicely on leash, is crate-trained, house-trained, and has 100% reliable recall despite being given a brand new name. If you or anyone you know would like to meet and potentially adopt Echo, reply or send me a message.

This is Echo (formerly called “Maleficent”). Echo was pulled from the stanislaus shelter by WILEY’s Wish animal rescue and is being fostered at Woof Work until she is adopted.
Echo is a cane Corso, about 6 years old. She loves to play and to be as close as possible to her humans. She gets along great with other dogs. She walks nicely on leash. And she is crate/kennel trained, house trained and doesn’t seem to bark at all.

Do you know what the number one sole cause of death for dogs is? Euthanasia. The place where most of these dogs are euthanized is in the shelters. We need to rethink our animal shelters and the contributions given to them. Yes, some dogs cannot be saved, some cannot be rehabilitated. And some do you have such critical health conditions to her euthanasia is the most humane option we have, but the sick animals are not the ones we are discussing here. I’m talking about the 1.5 year old dog that has been trapped at the shelter for 5 months and has since developed kennel stress- this dog is euthanized. So many of these dogs are euthanized. Euthanized because of a problem that developed in the shelter and at the hands of people that are caring for them.
I was at the Santa Cruz shelter waiting in the lobby, to be able to evaluate a dog for a program. A man came in who had found a beautiful female mastiff a week prior, near his home in Corralitos. He took the dog into his home, and the dog was perfect with his family, his dogs, his children, but he was told that he must bring the dog to the county animal shelter. He was told that it’s the law. As he answers the questions of the lady at the front desk, he is told that there is no guarantee that the dog won’t be euthanized- An unnecessary and insensitive statement to make when you are requiring somebody to hand over a dog. The man goes to his truck and returns to the lobby with the mastiff walking calmly by his side. A male volunteer with the slip lead approaches the dog, and she backs up, crouches, download the ground, ears down, and whale-eyed. Absolutely terrified and looking like she might snap at any moment. I call her to me and give her some treats from my pocket but the man with the slip lead puts it over her head and starts to tale her away. I try to tell her to be good, knowing that her life depends on it now. Knowing that if she is afraid because she is in this horrible place, they will kill her. They will kill her for being afraid. Any dog that is deemed by the staff to be “un-adoptable” is killed. This beautiful, sweet, Young, female mastiff never made it out of the shelter. She had to die with so much fear, in a loud and terrifying environment,
at the hands of people who didn’t understand her and didn’t appreciate her. The shelters weren’t full at this time. Many rescue groups would’ve taken her. I would’ve taken her. I kick myself every day for not stepping up and intercepting that dog.
If you find a lost dog, and you take that dog to the shelter or even worse, to the Santa Cruz emergency overnight drop-off, within 12 hours of that dog being lost, the owners could be required to pay a bill of over $400 just to get their dog, their own “property” back from a place that is so likely to kill them otherwise. this is the most sick form of blackmail I have ever witnessed. Pay or we kill them. All because people get scared when they are told that it’s the law to surrender them to the shelter when they are found. Because people think that the animal shelter shelters animals. It’s called the Animal services. It wasn’t created to protect animals. Animal Services was created to protect humans from animals.
if you find a lost cat, it’s probably not lost. It’s called an outdoor cat. If you find a lost dog, don’t put it in your car and take it all the way across town. Take a photo and post on social media immediately. Ask around the neighborhood. See if the animal knows where its home is. If not, keep them safe, scan them for a chip and call the chip company if they have one, and if you can’t do these things, contact me.

Humans, especially in this country feel like they need to save everyone and everything. We meddle with things we shouldn’t and the unintended consequences can be devastating as history has shown us. “Save” dogs from the streets in Asia- and here we are with the Asia-1 strain of distemper arriving in the US. We “save” dogs from Mexico, living in harmonious packs and bring them to live in our artificial world because we know what’s good for them…. A love for animals, and all good intentions, all too often causes harm. Kindness is to treat something or someone the way they were intended to be treated, to treat them in a way that is in-line with their design. But the shelter has deemed much of this treatment as unacceptable. They won’t adopt a dog out to somebody who says the dog will spend most of its time outside. I have heard stuff at the shelter say that living with a homeless person on the street is no way for a dog to live. So instead, tax dollars and monetary donations are spent on more sodium pentobarbital.
Do your part and be responsible. Don’t breed your dogs. Get them spayed and neutered. Start training immediately so that you don’t have to relinquish them due to a behavioral issue. Rehome them yourself instead of taking them to the shelter if it comes down to that. Give your time and support to a rescue group instead of this particular shelter.
This post is likely to upset a lot of people. It’s not my intention. But I’m okay with the consequences.
And finally, I must add that not all shelters are like this one. But they are all bound by some awful rules. Monterey county animal services in Salinas doesn’t have a fraction of the support that Santa Cruz does. The staff, and the few volunteers that they have care so deeply about the animals. They try so hard to get them placed and to prevent having to make that decision to euthanize. They have a realistic view of dogs and the life they should live. They deserve a lot more support than they get.

Phantom continues to improve each day. She is walking around more, eating normally, and having bursts of playfulness.
The concerns at this point are her lung sounds- she has a wet cough intermittently and there is a strange, audible ‘pop’ that occurs near her spine, every time she exhales. It could be from the separating of her ribs during surgery.
Nevertheless I couldn’t be happier to have her home and comfortable. Thank you to all of you who donated to help with her vet expenses. And thank you to all of those who offered your time and assistance. I’m deeply touched by you’re generosity and compassion.

Phantom was finally able to come home today after a week of hospitalization, surgery, diagnostic imaging, IV meds, repeated blood draws, sedation, and anesthesia. She is under close watch and must stay confined for 3 weeks. The risk of recurrence is extremely high for giant breeds. But attempting a second surgery this soon, would pose an even higher risk of death.

@ 1 am My heart is breaking. Called again to check on her and they are still drawing a significant amount of air out of her chest every 4 hours. If there’s no improvement by Sunday mid morning, then we discuss another surgery. This pain and sadness is unbearable. And I want to be able to see her so much but I know it will only make things harder.

I’ve never met a dog with such a big heart, so deeply caring, and loyal. Phantom has been in and out of the hospital since Tuesday, and was finally admitted to ICU Wednesday night at Sage in Campbell. She was underwent a 5 hour surgery to remove one of her lung lobes which had a ruptured abscess from a foxtail. She is recovering now in the ICU and hopefully will have her chest tube removed today, and come home in 2 days. Poor phantom. This is the 5th anesthetic procedure she’s undergone in her 2.5 years of life.
