Our last Scary night of the year! Come on out to our 36th Annual spooktacular Scary night.
Tomorrow and Saturday are our last kid friendly nights you don't want to miss those!
At the zoo, we try to offer enrichment that stimulates natural behaviors for the animals. Each species will have different behaviors that they would be partaking in in the wild, and it’s up to keepers to help them fulfill these. If you have ever visited Kit the Fox, you have probably noticed all the holes around his exhibit. That’s because wild foxes will utilize digging for den making for shelter, to dig up prey living underground, and they will also dig holes to hide excess food to come back for later. Typically Kit stashes his own food, but yesterday zookeeper Mandi did the hiding and buried some mice in a tote of soil. Kit wasn’t too sure why he was presented with a tub of dirt at first, but he figured it out and found his snacks!
36th Annual Spooktacular
Come one, come all!
Keepers at the zoo are still finding more and more ways to keep squash interesting for the animals! This morning Zookeeper Mandi cut a hole in squash and hollowed out the inside to hide snacks inside and then put the cut out piece back. The hyenas got a pelleted carnivore diet hidden in theirs and the chimps got soaked primate biscuits with raisins. Some of the chimps walked right past the squash not realizing they were anything special, but Jewelle was the first to figure it out. Watch the video with the audio on to hear one happy chimp!
We don’t know about you, but the animals at the zoo sure are happy it’s pumpkin season again! 🎃
With the cooler weather this weekend, it is the perfect time to come to the zoo and see some of our more heat sensitive animals out and about enjoying the break in the heat. We also have our Fall Fun area open across from our Mountain Lion exhibit! We are open today from 9:30am-4:30pm with entry ending at 4:00pm.
Today Sahel the Sulcata Tortoise visited a birthday party and on his walk back to the Muntjac yard he decided to stop at a puddle for some splashing! In the wild, wallowing in mud puddles and flipping mud on their backs is one of their natural behaviors they use to help them stay cool on hot days. 🐢
Our Highland Cattle Sandy is feeling 22! Earlier this week Sandy celebrated a huge birthday. Highland cattle typically have a total lifespan of 15-22 years. Sandy’s caregivers feel lucky to still have her around after so many years and appreciate every day we get to spend with her. If you visit our children’s museum you can still make her a (belated) birthday card! 🥳
We hope everyone is staying cool out there today! At the zoo we have many ways of helping our animals stay cool including soaking in pools, getting ice to roll around on or frozen treats, access to cool back areas, and as you can see our alpacas love playing in their sprinkler.
We want to remind everyone that during the extreme hot temperatures over the next few days, some animals will have access to behind the scenes areas for their health and safety. We greatly appreciate the understanding of our guests as we try to do what is best for our animals.
If you want to follow our Alpaca’s lead for cooling down, come visit our splash pad! 🦙⛲️
Otis and Cruz the Blue and Gold Macaws have been howdying so keepers can observe their reactions to each other through barriers before they are put together. Right now they enjoy having dance parties together!
Today is exactly a year since our highland calf Cinnamon came into this world! She has made her way into her keepers hearts and we hope she has made her way into yours as well. We will be celebrating her birthday this Friday, June 14th with cow themed crafts and games. We hope to see you there!
