Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of periodontal disease by the time they are 3 years old!?

Seeing your veterinarian for a dental checkup and scheduling a cleaning is an important part of your pets health! Dental disease is the most common disease amongst dogs and cats and it can cause a lot more issues than just smelly breath! Periodontal disease is linked to many systematic disease issues that include the heart, kidney, liver, and lungs!

What you can’t see can be hurting your pet! Often times dental disease goes unnoticed by pet parents because it starts under the gum line. The bacteria can get into the pockets and cause serious disease issues

At home dental care can help keep your pets teeth clean in between professional dental cleanings! Brushing your dogs teeth every day or providing a water additive to your pets water can go a long way for their health

Have questions about your pets dental care or want to schedule a checkup? Give our office a call today! Our team will be happy to help

April is Heartworm Awareness Month!
Heartworms are contracted by the bite of an infected mosquito and can be very dangerous to pets. There are a lot of common misconceptions surrounding the disease. Here are the top 3

1.) Indoor pets are not at risk for heartworms.
TRUTH: Any pet is at risk for heartworms. Mosquitoes can slip into the house and bite your pet, possibly infecting them.

2.) Only dogs can get heartworms.
TRUTH: Cats are also susceptible to heartworm disease. Although the disease is much less common, monthly prevention is just as important for them. There is no known treatment for heartworm disease in felines.

3.) I can stop heartworm prevention in the winter months
TRUTH: For the best protection year-round prevention is recommended. It only takes one bite from a mosquito infected with the disease to infect your pet

A vast majority of heartworm positive pets are asymptomatic. It is best to test your pet yearly to stay up to date on their heartworm status even if you give monthly prevention.

Clinical signs of heartworm disease include:
Coughing
Lethargy
Unintentional weight loss
Loss of appetite

Contact us today at (812)754-0341 to schedule your pets heartworm test and get started on prevention!
