In early July (2024) as a HARTT volunteer was leaving her home, she noticed an emaciated Dalmatian with a red collar roaming the streets. After talking to a neighbor, she found out the dog had been hanging around for several days and had taken an interest in her own dogs. Slip leash in hand, the HARTT volunteer got right to corralling the dog, then lassoed and loaded him up into her car. She could see his collar was engraved with the name “Rocky” and a phone number. Although the dog was in questionable condition, she reached out to the presumed owner to see if there was a logical explanation. Ultimately, “Rocky” went unclaimed and HARTT needed a rescue to take him in. It was at that point we decided “Rocky” would become ROCKET and he would be launched into a new life at our rescue. Naturally, after coming to Stay With Me, Rocket’s life had absolutely taken off! He learned how to walk on leash, behave inside the home, kennel training, to walk/run on the treadmill, and even how to swim! He became well mannered on adventures to OHSO, Home Depot, and PetSmart as well! With Rocket’s general personality being fun-loving, intelligent, and ACTIVE, it was clear he needed both mental and physical stimulation to keep him satisfied. His athletic breed is not for lazy nor passive pet owners, and a Dalmatian savvy adopter, one who would provide leadership with structure just as I have, would be ideal for his success. So, when I got an application in from a lovely person who had owned several Dalmatians through out her life, a lady who is outgoing, ready to love again after the passing of her last dog, has her own swimming pool, and only lives five minutes up the street from me… you know we had to set up a meet and greet right away! Of course, it didn’t take long for us (and her) to realize that this was going to be it for our boy. The best part about Rocket is that, if you give him a life that is out of this world, he is sure to love you to the moon and back! After all the updates I’ve gotten on him this week, it’s abundantly clear he’s found someone to love him to the moon and back, too ❤️

On September 2nd, Reuben was surrendered to our rescue by a Good Samaritan after a 10 day stray hold brought forward no owner. Since coming to Stay With Me, Reuben has been an outgoing, goofy boy in typical frenchie fashion! He’s been focusing on kennel training, walking on leash, learning to treadmill, managing his allergies, and playing with all the toys! In foster care, he has proven to be dog friendly / tolerant of both large and small dogs, male or female. He can be a bully when first meeting dogs and may need correction when he exhibits those kind of behaviors, BUT he always becomes friends at the end of the day! Even more so, Reuben LOVES humans! He’s super adoring of people and, truth be told, there hasn’t been one single person he hasn’t gotten affectionate with! Overall, Reuben is an adventurous, chill, happy, social boy ready for a day trip with you or a movie at home. Of course, it’s important that Reuben’s health remains just as glowing as his personality, so keeping him on prescription Apoquel in his new home will be a must! For the last several weeks, we have been working diligently to get his allergies under control and have found that prescription Apoquel is critical to his wellness. He takes a half of a chewable once a day. Additionally, he’s given one and a half Benadryl tablets in the morning and at night. Together, the Benadryl and Apoquel keep Reuben ready for whatever life throws at him!

On September 2nd, I took in two French Bulldogs under my rescue, one male (we named Reuben 🥪) and one female (we named Panini 🥙), both unaltered. Just a few days after taking them, the female was clearly in heat. They were never left together unattended, and I even kenneled them separately when unable to watch them. To be extra safe, I actually moved Panini up to my mom’s house on September 9th and I held onto Reuben at my place. On September 13th, I was assured by my vet that she was in heat and it was decided that, as soon as she was done with her heat cycle, she would be spayed. I booked her alter appointment for October 3rd.

Well, about two weeks after that vet appointment on September 13th, Panini’s abdomen swelled up like you would not believe! My first thought was pyometra (a serious infection of the uterus) and we were back at the vet for treatment… but boy was I in for a shock! Our sweet Panini was not sick… SHE WAS PREGNANT! AND ALREADY HALF WAY ALONG!

WHAT?!?!?! How could this be if she was in heat just a couple weeks ago? How could this be if she was separated from Reuben?

Ultimately, it didn’t matter as our vet advised it was in Panini’s best interest to still get her spayed on October 3rd (the following week). I agreed for a number of reasons including (but not limited to) the fact that her body condition reflected a mother that had already produced more litters than any dog should, the fact that French Bulldogs are known to have high risk pregnancies/deliveries often needing c-sections, and (of course) the fact that we are in a population crisis as rescuers.

BUT PANINI HAD OTHER PLANS! The day before her scheduled spay appointment (October 2nd), she had started showing some pre-labor signs (nesting, restlessness, panting, and a drop in temperature), even though our vet had said she was only about half way along in gestation. I told myself, “It’s in my head. If she was really going to have her puppies, she wouldn’t be in labor for another three or four weeks at this point!” Just in case, I set up a welping area for her with a camera… And at 1:20am on October 3rd, less than 8 hours away from her spay appointment, Panini naturally delivered her first puppy! By sunrise, she revealed all SEVEN little loaves of bread she had been hiding in her oven 🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖

What’s more, all of her puppies seemed well developed and healthy… not premature… which told me Panini must’ve been pregnant long before she came into my care (a relief to me, because I had begun to doubt if I had been a responsible animal rescuer). Unfortunately, this peace of mind was overshadowed as one of her puppies did pass away a day after the birth. I’m not sure why Panini rejected that particular puppy, but perhaps she sensed something was wrong with him that I couldn’t see (it’s not unusual for mother dogs to reject puppies that have issues, it’s nature’s way). Trying to focus on the positive, I’m thankful her other puppies have been growing and gaining weight daily… they are strong, thriving, and SO DAMN CUTE!!!

To this day, it’s still a wonder to me how/why Panini was in heat if she was pregnant, and if she was ever in heat at all or if it was just a complication in her pregnancy. More importantly, I wonder what these six precious puppies’ personalities will be like in a few weeks. In the meantime…

❤️🤍💙HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY❤️🤍💙

Tipsy (chihuahua mix) and Moonshine (boxer mix) want you to remember…
Keep your pet INSIDE this holiday, only letting him/her outside for BRIEF SUPERVISED POTTY BREAKS ON LEASH (even in your backyard)‼️
Keep a COLLAR WITH AN ID TAG on your pet at all times (even if your pet is microchipped and / or inside your home) and make sure your pet’s MICROCHIP IS REGISTERED WITH ACCURATE INFORMATION‼️

If you don’t want to be looking for your pets on the 5th of July, practice maximum safety on the 4th🇺🇸

A couple nights ago, I gave Moonshine her first bed ❤️ She hasn’t destroyed any towels, blankets, or toys since coming to Stay With Me… So I thought I’d give our latest addition a nice little upgrade! She is still recovering from her past life, but I think she really appreciates this… Later on, I actually heard her begin to snore (video in comments for proof) 😴 Beyond endearing! She also got a bath earlier this week and her new collar just came in the mail too 😍 I wonder what she thinks of all this…
