šŸ™šŸ¼šŸ† I wish I could put all my feelings into words and my words in sentences that would make sense right now. I canā€™t even begin to describe how proud I am and all the emotions I have of my amazing wifeā€™s, Jana Aguel, day today and the entire show so far!

This week, Javier Suarez (La Cuarta Jota), gave Jana the most amazing opportunity to try his beloved senior Fino Stallion, ā€œMaƱanero Del Condeā€, to see if she got along with enough to show in a very difficult class filled with amazing stallions. Not only did they get along during the practice sessions but it was like they molded into one solid being, one solid bond and alliance between woman and horseā€¦ā€¦ so much so, Javier turns and says to me, ā€œ Did I just see what I saw, did he really just work that board like thatā€¦. Wow!ā€

Sorry, let me get to the pointā€¦. Jana and MaƱanero went into their class today like lifelong partners and had amazing rail work and board work. The judges said during their explanation that from the beginning of the class there was no doubt amongst any of them that this horse and rider were the entire package.

Iā€™m just beyond elated! šŸ™šŸ¼ā¤ļøšŸ’ƒšŸ•ŗšŸ» I canā€™t wait to see what the championships may bring on Sunday for both her mountsšŸ’•

Thank you to everyone that went out of their way today at the show to congratulate Jana on her very first win in the Fino Stallion division.

Congratulations my Love ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø

This is an amazing and right on point article.
Replace the MT winter mentioned with the AZ 120Ā° summers

We love, appreciate and respect our vet, Dr Jana Echols of Perfect Balance Equine Dentistry and Veterinary Services

Following is some important food for thought courtesy of AAEP member Dr. Matt Witzel:

"Iā€™m writing this because it needs to be said for the betterment of the profession that I love, AND the well-being and health of your horses. I apologize for the length of this and feel free to skip to the last 3 paragraphs if youā€™re in a time crunch.

As horse owners, how hard has it been for you to find a vet that is available all the time for your animals? Did you know right now there is a huge demand for more equine vets? In my graduating class from vet school thereā€™s only about 5 of us (out of close to 100) that are still working on horses. That number is down significantly compared to how many of us were dedicated equine oriented vet students.

The fact is, there is a general exodus of younger veterinarians from equine practice that switch to small animal medicine because it pays better and lacks after hours emergencies. Equine practices as a general population, however, provide emergency services 24/7 for their clients because large animal emergency-specific hospitals are extremely rare. I shouldnā€™t have to say this but emergencies are never fun. We donā€™t wake up in the morning hoping for a horse to colic, or some kidā€™s first horse to break a leg. We donā€™t enjoy leaving our kids right before tucking them into bed to go see a bad laceration. Itā€™s not fun to rearrange our 8 hour day into a 12 hour day so that we can fit in a choke thatā€™s an hour and a half drive out of our way. Itā€™s all awful. But we do it because it needs to be done.

The difference between the pay in the vet industry is based on the fact that you bring your dog or cat to their vet who will work on them while working on 2 or more others at the same time. Small animal vets are therefore able to see many more patients in a day. Equine vets on the other hand will most of the time be working on a single patient at a time, focusing 90% of their attention (phone calls happen during exams, itā€™s a thingā€¦) on YOUR HORSE. Sometimes thereā€™s significant travel time between appointments. Itā€™s possible to spend 6 hours of a 12 hour work day in the truck and only see 4-5 cases in that time. Why???? Because weā€™re dedicated to your horsesā€™ wellbeing and some people donā€™t have a trailer. Or some people donā€™t feel comfortable hauling a trailer on icy winter roads in MT. I get that and I donā€™t blame those people. Itā€™s just something that needs to be accepted so we can move on.

With the growth in horse ownership that weā€™ve seen recently and the increasing demand for vet work with a simultaneous lack of available young equine vets that are willing to put up with the conditions listed above, Iā€™ve come to the obvious conclusion that something needs to change.

Hereā€™s my request to you:
Please appreciate your local vet. Please be loyal to him or her. Please donā€™t think of your vet as someone to call only when your horse is about to die because you didnā€™t want to pay for an emergency fee last night when treatment would have mattered. Please ask to discuss costs up front if thatā€™s an issue for you rather than stating youā€™d do anything and everything necessary for your horse then turn around and complain about the bill. On that note, please compare medical costs of your animals to medical costs for yourself BEFORE insurance kindly tells you what your copay is. Please let your vet be involved with your horsesā€™ wellness before it becomes a problem. Please consult your vet with horse health questions instead of an internet based forum.

And last but not leastā€¦ please consider using your local vet for things like dentals, vaccines, and lamenesses rather than someone traveling from out of town. Income from these routine services enable service expansion and improved care. That includes things like mobile digital X-ray, endoscopy, or ultrasound equipment so that we can accurately diagnose and successfully treat your sick animal.

I want you to think long and hard about taking away the enjoyable work and needed income from us and giving that to someone who you donā€™t have a relationship with, who might be practicing those procedures ILLEGALLY (dentistry for instance can only legally be performed in Montana by a veterinarian or under the direct visual supervision of a licensed veterinarian; ā€œequine dentistsā€ who do not fall under these categories are not properly trained to handle dental diseases and have been known to cause more harm than good), who wonā€™t be available when your horse has a joint injection reaction, who wonā€™t get out of bed to come to your place and help get your hypothermic geriatric horse off the ground before it freezes to death.

All of us as veterinarians put a lot into the relationships that we build with our clients and itā€™s because of those relationships that we dedicate ourselves to becoming better at what we do and trying harder to keep your horses healthy. So when we find out that you use a traveling vet or a non-veterinarian dentist for your horses dental work because itā€™s $20 or $30 dollars cheaper, youā€™ve just put a price on what our commitment is worth to you."

SOLD

CuliacƔn

7 yr old bay Paso Fino gelding

At 14 hh Culi needs a rider who will take the time and effort into putting miles on him. He responds best with someone calm, patient, with a confident seat. We want a great match for both rider and horse. He has been hauled and ridden in the desert, water and local streets with traffic. All he really wants is to be someoneā€™s pocket pony who will love on him.

He is up to date on all his vaccines, dental, deworming, and farrier every 6 weeks.

Located in Mesa, AZ. Please PM this direct page for more information.

I didn't have any plans to post anything insightful today, but some of you have seen a viral post that's making the rounds that says some rather scathing things about equine vets.

The post definitely raised my blood pressure a bit, mostly because my perspective can't be farther from what that person has posted.

Time and again I see vets work around the clock to do everything they can for horses in need, and even donating resources, services, and time away from their family when situations have been dire. Having ridden along with various vets locally, I am always amazed at how much people demand from them, and how patient and calm they remain in order to help a horse, despite how a client might be feeling or acting. Some drive thousands of miles a month, keep their trucks stocked with thousands of dollars in supplies, tens of thousands of dollars in diagnostic equipment, have hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans, have invaluable amounts of education, and have to constantly hear complaints about pricing and clients saying "they're only in it for the money."

I am impressed with vets who work around the clock, manage a dozen twirling plates at once, de-escalate difficult situations and spiraling clients, and still remain focused and able to save horses in need.

Feel free to drop a comment about a vet you're thankful for, or a situation where a vet saved your horse's life (or one who helped you compassionately decide if it was time to let them go). I would love to show them some appreciation for an (often thankless) job well done.
