More 🥶cold, freezing🥶 weather is here (with lots of rain), so we ask that pet owners please keep your pets safe and warm. Best case scenario, bring them indoors where they can be warm, dry, and comfortable because they deserve to be.

If you are not able to, make sure they have a proper shelter free of drafts/leaks and access to a safe heat source. They should be able to have access to fresh food and water that is not frozen over. Be sure to use straw for bedding as blankets and towels can get wet and retain moisture, causing your pet to be even more cold.

We hope everyone and their pets stay warm for the coming week!

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and that means there may be more chocolate in the house. It's crucial to be mindful of the potential dangers chocolate poses to our pets and keep it out of reach! 🍫☠️

Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that dogs process much more slowly than humans. Even small amounts can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and an increased heart rate, while larger amounts can lead to more severe health issues. Since theobromine is found in cacao, chocolates with higher cacao content, like dark chocolate and baking chocolate, are especially toxic to pets.

February is ✨🦷Pet Dental Health Month!🦷✨ Everyone knows that routine dental visits are important for the health of our teeth, but did you know that it is just as important for your pet?

Dental disease results from the buildup of bacteria, plaque, and tartar on teeth and beneath the gum line, causing pain. If left untreated, it can lead to systemic health issues as bacteria enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs. So show your pet you ❤love❤ them by making their dental health a priority!

Please read! This is not a typical post you will see from us on here. We like to keep things fun and educational, however, it is of utmost importance that you all know what is happening in the veterinary community within our state government.

You may have heard that Kentucky is opening a veterinary school (or attempting to open a veterinary school) at Murray State University. While it is true that HB153, if passed, will open the door for Murray State University to open a veterinary school, it has not yet been passed. That is where you come in, and also where we feel it is important to educate you on the types of veterinary schools there are in the US and the model that is being proposed.

There are 2 models for veterinary schools across North America.

The original model is a veterinary teaching hospital model. In this model, students spend 2-3 years in the classroom and the last 1-2 years in the veterinary teaching hospital getting hands on experience with nearly all of the various specialties. Students rotate every 2 weeks through a new specialty learning as much as possible with a wide variety of small and large animal cases. Each student is taught by the same faculty therefore receiving the same level of education. With this model, students in their third year also take a junior surgery course where they learn to do basic surgeries on live animals. These animals generally are from humane societies or are bred for this purpose. These patients are then generally adopted out after they have served their purpose of teaching veterinary students. Students graduate with a broad knowledge and understanding of all species preparing them to go into practice or further their education with an internship and/or residency.

The second model (and the model proposed by Murray State University) is called a distributive model. Much like the teaching hospital, students in a distributive model will spend 3 years in the classroom. However, the difference is that in the last year, instead of staying at the university and learning from a teaching hospital of experts, these students are sent to any veterinary practice across the state (and outside of the state if there is not enough practices within this state to teach all of the students). Private practices, like Scottsville Animal Hospital, are responsible for teaching these students. Now, while we feel very strongly about education of anyone wanting to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, this would be quite the burden on us and practices like ours. What this model means for our clients is longer wait times to get appointments as we will be teaching and training which takes time. Your pets will be treated by these students. These students would be required to perform surgeries and among many other tasks. While we put your patients care as our top priority, this would be necessary. Students in this model rotate practices every 4 weeks. This causes each students learning and training to be vastly different as they all do not go to the same practices. What they are allowed to do at each practice differs as well. This model could very well graduate students who have never performed a surgery or handled emergencies. Effectively graduating students who are not ready to go into practice. Please understand that there are models of this type in the US that are very successful, however, as you will see in the shared post below, we don’t believe that will be the case with the proposal from Murray State University.

We are concerned that the long-standing contract Kentucky has with Alabama for in-state tuition to Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine will be stopped due to the added financial strain on the state. If this happens, we are trading a high quality, full scope education for a subpar education of our veterinary students.

If this concerns you, like it concerns the KVMA and the majority of veterinarians across the state, we ask that you contact your legislators and let them know that you have concerns with HB153.

KVMA has grave concerns regarding the Murray State proposal to build a distributive model veterinary school in Kentucky. This will ultimately endanger the contract seats @ Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine that has been in place for 73 years with over 76% of KY residents returning to KY to practice. Please read below our list of main concerns. KVMA will make daily posts breaking down each of these points and feel free to share this in your own FB feed.
Contact your Legislators if this also concerns you!
