The majestic German Shepherd on duty! Lady is learning that making good choices leads to a more peaceful life. Sitting calmly and watching other dogs from a distance is a big step for her journey with reactivity. There’s nothing wrong with looking, but certain decisions have consequences and calm behavior leads to rewards.

Does your dog greet everyone with a jump? 🐾 While it may seem like bad manners, jumping is often your dog’s way of saying, 'I’m excited to see you!' It may surprise you to find out that it was likely a behavior that was created by the humans when we allow it as puppies!
To address jumping:
1️⃣ Teach an alternative behavior, like sitting when greeting.
2️⃣ Reward calm greetings with treats or attention.
3️⃣ Be consistent—don’t allow jumping sometimes and discourage it other times.
With patience and practice, your dog will learn that calm greetings get the best rewards.
Ready to tackle jumping? Let us show you how!

Did you know dogs show stress in subtle ways? Watch for:
🐾 Lip licking or yawning when they’re not tired.
🐾 Panting or pacing without reason.
🐾 Avoiding eye contact or suddenly becoming clingy.
Recognizing these signals can help you prevent unwanted behaviors and make your dog feel more secure.
If your dog seems stressed, let’s create a plan to help!

Timing is everything in training! When rewarding your dog, make sure you deliver the treat or praise immediately after they perform the desired behavior.
For example, if you’re teaching 'sit,' the reward should come the moment their rear touches the ground—not seconds later. This helps them connect their action with the reward. A clicker is a great way to mark this behavior!
Stay consistent and watch how fast they catch on!

Did you know play can be part of training? Tug-of-war, fetch, and chase games are great ways to bond with your dog while reinforcing commands like 'drop it' and 'come.'
Use play as a reward during training sessions—it keeps things exciting and teaches your dog that listening leads to fun!
How do you and your dog like to play?

Romeo and Winnie (housemates and both former board and trains) are back to hang out. I’m happy to say their training has held up. They still wait patiently when doors open, recall has been great, and when I needed everyone to settle after some intense reunion play, they settled quickly (I think Romeo is ready for a nap 😆😆😆).

Positive reinforcement isn’t about bribing your dog—it’s about motivating them!
By rewarding good behavior with something your dog loves (like treats, toys, or praise), you’re teaching them that good choices are worth it. Over time, rewards can fade, but the learned behaviors remain strong.
Struggling to find what motivates your dog? We can help discover their favorites!

Keep it short and sweet! Training sessions don’t need to last long to be effective. In fact, short, 5-10 minute sessions throughout the day often work better than one long session.
Dogs learn faster when they’re having fun and not overwhelmed. Take breaks, keep the energy up, and end on a positive note with their favorite reward.

Barking is your dog’s way of communicating—but why are they barking?
🐾 Alert barking: “There’s something out there!”
🐾 Demand barking: “Pay attention to me!”
🐾 Boredom barking: “I’m under-stimulated.”
Understanding the why behind the bark is the first step to addressing it. Solutions might include mental stimulation, clear boundaries, or desensitizing triggers.
Have a barking problem? Let’s talk solutions!

Say hi to Larry! This little German Shepherd just wrapped up his first four puppy lessons, focusing on basic obedience and structured play.

Larry LOVES to bite—typical for a pup his age—but we’ve channeled that energy into productive outlets through play. He’s all set to enjoy the holidays with his family.

We’re looking forward to resuming his training after the holidays to keep him moving forward and building those good habits.

Consistency is key when training your dog! Dogs thrive when they know what’s expected of them. Make sure everyone in the household is using the same commands and reinforcing the same rules.
For example, if you use 'off' to stop your dog from jumping on the couch, make sure no one else is allowing them up or using a different word like 'down.'
Clear communication = faster progress and a happier dog.

I’m over here hoping the snow on my sidewalk just melts, and then there are committed dog owners out here carving out what looks like an Olympic-sized track for their dogs. 🤯

Major props to this client for going the extra mile (or lap?) to make sure their pup has a place to stretch their legs in the snow. Who else is out here shoveling for their dogs? Let’s see those paths!

Let’s talk about dog breeds. I’d like to start some discussion and this will be the first of a few posts discussing dog selection. Every breed falls into a specific class, and understanding your dog’s breed traits can play a big role in shaping your training and lifestyle. Here are the breed classes:

• 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: Bred for controlling livestock.
• 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Bred for hunting and retrieving.
• 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Bred for guarding or pulling sleds.
• 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: Bred for hunting by sight or scent.
• 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿: Bred to hunt vermin.
• 𝗧𝗼𝘆: Small dogs bred for companionship.
• 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: A diverse group that doesn’t fit into other categories.

I’d love your help and involvement in this! Please answer these questions in the comments:

1. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺? (If you have a mix or rescue, feel free to answer based on the breeds you’re aware of or your best guess!)
2. 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼?
3. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲?
4. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸, 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻?

𝗕𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘀: Research the history of your dog’s breed and share something new you discovered. Even longtime owners are often surprised when researching their breeds history!

Power team here. This was just our second session! A great relationship exists between these two and this is critical with powerful breeds.
