Today was a heartbreaking and devastating day as my incredibly amazing lesson horse, Gem, passed away in the pasture sometime last night. All my students will greatly miss her and I absolutely will miss her most. She was a horse I never had to worry about when teaching and it made my job as an instructor so fun.
Three years ago I bought this horse taking a huge gamble on skinny big horse that had a horrible cough. The sellers didn’t know her name or anything about her other than she was a pasture pet. I decided the price was right to take a chance and she seemed like she could be a “Hidden Treasure”. First stop after purchasing her was to the vet for testing and thankfully nothing was wrong other than bad allergies and she needed major TLC. Next step was bringing her home and getting her the food and care she needed and slowly working with her.
She proved to have some trust issues and was stand off ish but within a month she was turning out to be the “Gem” I had hoped for. She had a great mind and once I won her over she was super eager to please and do anything I asked. She learned to canter and jump and loved it. Unfortunately her joints didn’t look like they would be holding up for jumping hold so quickly I decided to have her just be my trot and canter lesson horse.
By the time I opened my business in 2023 at our current location Gem was a saint and the most amazing lesson horse I could ever ask for. She was a perfect balance between whoa and go. Great breaks but liked to work. She was a gentle giant at 16.3 just shy of 17h and was so patient with every rider I ever put on her from 2yr olds to adults. She loved to be groomed and pampered, ridden, and go to horse shows! Always a super steady girl. Great confidence builder for first trot and canter. My lesson program is at a huge loss without her! Thank you to all my amazing students who rode her for spoiling and loving her so well!
