That’s a wrap for the 2023 Teens and Oregon Mustang Challenge. Though it didn’t go how I had hoped, it was still fun and we learned a lot! Oakley and I are very glad to be home, and
I want to say a huge thank you to my stall sponsors Tucker Cool Auctioneer and Rodeo Announcer and my wonderful Grandparents, Jerry and Shari Hendrick! Also a big thank you to my family who went with this crazy project and supported me through the process, and thank you to my Mom who drove us all the way down to Oregon and helped me out a ton. And to my little sisters who are the best stable hands a girl could ask for! Thank you all of you for following along on this journey, and supporting Oakley and I. Can’t wait to see where life takes me with this mare!
I will still be posting here about Oakley’s journey so keep following along.

Oakley is pretty dang cool! She did so much better today, yesterday was interesting, she threw a huge temper tantrum when trying to do the trail course, so we didn’t end up doing that or our freestyle, then body conditioning went ok, she only got one foot in the trailer before she decided she was done, she did stand ground tied while I pick up all 4 of her feet, I also had to turn her lose in a round pen for somebody else to catch, she walked right up to him! But today was a lot better, she did super well in showmanship and then we played on the trail course! Tomorrow we have awards, then we will head home!
I want to say a big thank you to Best Bid Auctions and my Grandparents for sponsoring Oakleys stall!

Day 101
These pictures are from a few days ago, Oakley is doing really great! She stands tied pretty well, I’ve been working on her feet for a few weeks now, and finally got a picture. My mom led her down the trail and road while I led my gelding, she did really well, and didn’t spook about a car! Yesterday she went down the road without her buddy and was very clam about it. Oh, and my brother flew his drone around and over her and she didn’t care!

I haven’t posted anything in a while (sorry about that) but Oakley is doing well! She went on her first trail walk, and did very well! Wasn’t spooking at all! And when she does spook, she just stops, looks and is like ok fine!
Also, on Sunday I gave her a bath, she’s all soft, smooth and shiny!

She loved rolling in the nice arena dirt!!

Oakley aka Oakie as my little sisters call her!
Rosie wanted to put flowers 🌸 in her mane, we have never had a mare before, so it’s fun to get all the girly stuff, with pink halters and all!!
( The flowers only lasted about 10 seconds before she shook them all out!)🤣🤣

Day 51
The past 10 days have been great! We went from pretty much nothing to getting the tag off to touching both sides with ease, to walking up and clipping a lead rope on to changing out her halter, then to leading a little bit and brushing out her tail! Oakley is really picking up everything fast, it just took a lot of time to win her trust! She has lots of potential, with time and patience she is going to be a great horse!

Day 40
After over a month trying to get close, we went from not being able to get within 2 feet to being able to touch all over to getting the tag # off in 2 days! 8029 is officially Oakley!
Oakley is a very smart gal, a little on the stubborn side, you just have to earn her trust, and she makes you work for it 🤪 She has lots of potential, with time and patience she will make a wonderful horse!
I think now she will pick everything up quickly, it was just getting though her barriers, she isn’t a fan of her right side being touched yet, but her left I can touch from behind her ear to to her hip! It’s progress!

Day 30
I was finally able to grab the lead rope and get her calmed down. The 1st time I grabbed it she tried to get away, but she never tried to turn on me or kick me. When she stopped and turned to me I let go of the lead rope. 2nd time, she pulled it out of my hand, but the 3rd time I was able to hold on and she stopped right away and I dropped the lead rope, and we did again, she did really well!

Day 30
I haven’t been posting anything lately, but here is an update on Oakley.
She is doing well, still haven’t been able to get the tag off yet, we’ve been taking it slow and steady. Today we worked on disengaging her hindquarters, she did really well! That is what we have been working on for awhile. That and touching her nose a bit. She is really on her guard, but she has calmed down a lot, so it’s progress! Slowly, but surely.

Day 10
I haven’t been posting much lately, but here is a update on Oakley; she has settled in well, she’s been drinking out of her trough, eating out of a feeder, and been going under her cover like a champ! Last week it was raining like crazy, and she just camped out under the cover. She will eat her grain with me standing right there.
Today it was really nice out, so we did three sessions today; first session she had a lot of energy so we did lunging till she settled down a bit, then I let her rest while I worked with my gelding. Second session she was a lot calmer, so we did approach and retreat, and did really well, 3rd which was this evening, I got super close to touching her but she wasn’t quite ready for that. She still has her tag on though, but we are working up to that!
