HOOF ABSCESSES can be so frustrating!
Sooner or later - it seems we all deal with them with our horses.

What is this nasty problem really?

Most often seen during the wet months of winter or spring, hoof abscesses can plague our horses year-round. Typically a hoof abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms when bacteria or other foreign objects enter the body and cause an infection. They usually occur when debris and bacteria enter the foot through cracks and wounds or even horseshoeing holes. The bacteria gets trapped between the sensitive tissue layer that bonds the hoof capsule to the coffin bone and the hoof wall or sole and then creates pus. The pus builds up and puts pressure behind the hoof wall or sole, until it causes the sudden onset of acute lameness when the pain finally becomes too great for the horse to use their foot.

Some abscesses are uncomplicated and rupture on their own like a large pimple at the coronary band or heel bulbs; other abscesses can require medical attention.

Our Story

I have made the tough decision to shut down our horse lesson and training program of 30+ years. It began with my late daughter and I in the late 80s, through neighborhood kids, and shortly after 4-H. We started in the back pasture, spent many years with just a round pen and trails, and finally were able to build our current arena. We have learned much through training horses, and their riders. There have been so many good times – parades, drill team, cow events, games, camping, youth camp, performance shows and so many trail miles. It has brought great pleasure helping others develop their equestrian skills, confidence and even owning their own horse. It has really come full circle that one of our former 4-H member’s project horse now resides in our barn.

It was not an easy decision. So, a new direction and pace.....

Full care boarding, and open arena riding by appointment only will continue.
