I still don't trust FB - never will, ever again, the hack cost me thousands of dollars - so there will be no fundraising through FB. Please see our fabulous website created by the talented Jennifer R Heuertz for goings-on at the farm! linkie at top of page

nothing like coming outside to find the minis have staged a breakout from their big, lush pasture and are now demanding to be let back into the smaller, more crowded and less green pasture. and are mad that there are other horses in there now.

Johnny and Fred try to convince me to feed them 2 hours early.

yes, the timing of Bootsie arriving so soon after the loss of Cake Pop isn't the best, but bringing Bootsie here was a project that was months in the making and things had to happen when they did. my grief over Cake Pop is not diminished or put aside for my joy over Bootsie. I can feel both things at once.

here's a video about farrier work and why buying a horse is the cheapest part of owning one

My howdy pen is ready! A new resident arrives soon that will eventually need it. As always mad thanks to Michael Walton, aka Mr. Fixit. If you need work done in central NC, he's your guy.

So apparently, it's a thing with disreputable horse auctions, to pump a sick horse full of drugs enough that he will seem okay, for a few days anyway. Cake Pop was full of steroids and anti inflammatories and pain killers, to hide the fact that he had a completely collapsed trachea, at the point in his neck where the trachea branches off into the lungs. The drugs wore off today, and every breath he took was agony, feeling like he was suffocating, unable to get enough air in or out. It's incurable, and progressive. He's on the Other Side now, free of pain and breathing easy.

RIP beautiful Cake Pop. May you run happy and pain free in the next life.

Well, I thought we had dodged a bullet and pulled a healthy horse from the kill pen, Cake Pop. But he went down today with severe pneumonia in all lobes of both lungs. Is being rushed to NC State equine hospital for emergency treatment and more in depth diagnosis. Initial bill for intake and stabilization is $6,000.

Does anyone want to buy a kidney? It's old but pretty healthy. Part of a liver maybe, I don't need the whole thing?

So I wrote a whole long post about the farrier and the vet coming today, and the work we had to do, and how everyone did (cake pop, applejack, and cream great, Cinnamon Bun a total fail, Cookie Monster tried repeatedly to bite the farrier) but FB ate that interesting and informative post. So you get this.

Lest you still think running a rescue is cheap, vet today was $300 (they give me a huge discount) and farrier is $200 and has to be done every six weeks. The vets have to come back try work on Cinnamon's stifle joint in 4 weeks, another $200. For the money I spend on my "cheap" rescue horses, I could buy young, beautifully trained, healthy horses. But that's not what we do here at Safe Harbor.

oh and look, FB has randomly turned off my donate button agsin. let's see if it'll let me add my linktree:

Cake Pop arrived today and if definitely NOT a Cake Pop. He's a sweet boy, but brays like a donkey and hates having his face touched. Not a Cake. We need another cute sweet food name that begins with C. we are considering Cashew Crunch.

our newest mini, Cake Pop, who we hope integrates into our herd. We are told he has been ridden in the past, but we won't know until he arrives if he is sound enough to ride. He is coming from the same kill buyer that Cream, Cookie, and Cinnamon came from. We'll know more after he arrives on Tuesday and has his vet visit.

Here's the progress on Applejack, the starved horse. He still has a long way to go but is steadily improving. starting from left, clockwise: first day collafe of three pics, then one week later, then bottom right, today. His ribs are less visible, his topline improved, his rump more rounded.
