Wholy mammoth of an egg! 🥚🥚🥚

The brown egg is an overly large egg, and the green egg is a normal large sized egg. Psssttttt: check back tomorrow when we crack it to see if there’s a double yolk!

Here’s a few tidbits about the egg production process and how extra extra large eggs can happen.

Chickenology: a female chick’s o***y contains all of the ova it will ever have when it’s hatched. The o***y begins to convert ova to egg yolks when she is mature. With the right lighting conditions exists, hormones stimulate ova to develop into yolks. Yolks are released from the o***y into the oviduct when they reach the right size and travel down the oviduct to acquire their whites, membranes, color (if any) and shell. An egg requires approximately 25 hours to complete the addition of theegg white, the shell membranes, and the shell. Soon after an egg is laid, the process starts again.

Irregular eggs that are bigger than normal ordinarily contain double yolks, causing the hen’s reproductive system to work overtime to generate these monstrosities. Older hens tend to lay larger eggs because the oviduct loses elasticity over time.

‼️We will be partnering with a local business to bring you fresh chicken!‼️ 🍗

How many of you would be interested?

How would you prefer it? Whole or cut into thigh, breast, wing, and drum stick?

Would you be interested in the gizzards and livers?

We would also have the carcass available for broth from those that we split.

This will be happening this summer so we are just trying to get a feel for how many to process!

We will be accepting pre orders as well.

WE HAVE CHICKS!!

We have Barred Rock MALE day old chicks available!

The Barred Rock rooster has a calm temperament and handles the cold well. They like to protect their ladies. The barred rock lays a medium to large brown egg. So any chicks that would come from this roster would likely have those qualities as well.

They are considered a dual purpose chicken which means they can be butchered and will produce a good quality freezer stock. They are slower to grown than the average meat chicken which means they are easier to take care of and do not require as much work. They are ideally processed at 16 weeks.

New hoop house for the incoming meat chickens. Plus a big coop renovation for all our added ladies 😍 using our space to its fullest potential. Easy to clean roosting area, a chicken “jail” for injured hens or introducing older chicks to the flock, and my personal favorite roll away nesting boxes to keep eggs clean and unbroken when the hens are feeling a little rotten.

If you would be interested in purchasing processed chickens in late summer please message us for info.

It’s time to meet one of our ladies!

This is Thelma, she is a Silver Laced Wyandotte. They can be a dual-purpose chicken; used for eggs and meat. The Wyandottes lay on average 200 medium to large brown eggs. They are cold hardy and can tolerate being confined but love to forage.

The Wyandotte comes in many varieties. Such as: silver abf golden laced, buff, black, blue, and a few others.

They have a rose comb, which is more compact that what you picture when you think of a chicken. This is especially helpful in colder climates because it is less susceptible to frost bite.

They have a fairly chill temperament but can be more dominant. They may be docile but are not a fan of cuddling too much, unless it’s with their chicks. They tend to go broody and make good moms. They lay pretty steady though the winter and tend to be a good beginner breed.

And if all else they are a beautiful bird. ❤️
