This adorable Shiba Inu puppy is working with us on all of her puppy life skills! From mouthing during teething to learning to leash walk, the world is a big place and it’s our job to teach our puppy that we’ve got their back as they mature! Meet Frenzy🌪️ She’s an aptly named one year old Belgian Malinois! This leggy lady is working through her teenage feelings and building foundations for a future in dog sports!

During adolescence, struggles with behavioral challenges and resistance to training, are a normal part of the developmental process! This phase, characterized by hormonal changes and increased independence, can be very disheartening for pet owners. However, with patience, consistency, and some empathy, most dogs overcome these challenges and mature into great canine counterpart’s! What did your dog struggle with when they were angsty teens?

We talk about this in our lessons a ton but this is a great comprehensive guide for why!

Making sure that our dogs are comfortable mentally AND physically should be top of our priority list! Symptoms of pain can look like sudden behavior changes, regression with lifestyle skills, or aversions to seemingly random things and activities. We should always keep the full picture in mind when working with our canine companions to set them up for the most success!

Meet Jarvis!

This Corgi dude and his handler have worked his dog reactivity feelings to the point where they’re ready for bigger goals!

He’s right on his way to getting his CGCA and CGCU! He’s also been building the skills to compete in Rally, a competitive obedience sport. Rally requires dogs to complete a course of obedience tasks swiftly and precisely for points!

This is definitely a team to watch and I can’t wait to see them succeed!

Congratulations Erin and Arlo on completing your CGC and TKN certification! It's been so fun to see your progress and hard work in overcoming Arlo's challenges with car chasing and dog reactivity.

For those who are unfamiliar, the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) and TKN (Trick Dog Novice) certifications are an excellent way to demonstrate your dog's training and obedience skills. The CGC shows that your dog can follow basic commands and behave well in public, while the TKN showcases your dog's ability to perform specific tricks and commands.

These certifications can be incredibly beneficial for both you and your dog. They can even lower your homeowner's insurance rates! Additionally, they can be a great way to bond with your dog and showcase their unique abilities.

Congratulations again to Erin and Arlo on this amazing accomplishment! We wish you all the best in your continued training and look forward to seeing all that you both will achieve in the future!

Meet Nilla! 🐾

Nilla is an Australian Shepherd with big feelings about the world!

She’s doing a Board and Train with us to recondition negative feelings and learn ways she can enjoy the world! We’re working on creating better alternatives to dog and human reactivity, practicing emotional regulation, muzzle training, and learning to settle in the home!

Nilla does have a bite history, which means it’s important for us to get her on a realistic routine and training plan to prevent any potential future injuries. We know she can stress easily so a fair clear training plan is essential to prevent unnecessary stress and start her on the right foot!

Nilla’s got this! 👏🏼

Recall Under Construction? 🚧

A recall, or “coming when called”, is the MOST important skill for our dogs to have! An unsecured and uncontrolled dog could potentially get injured or cause harm to others in their environment!

Here are some helpful tips and tricks to help you practice your recall!

Did you know we can teach our dogs HOW to learn?

Today we’re learning to shape with Kilogram! Kilo’s had no formal training before and is establishing skills with us!

Training formal behaviors is productive but conceptual learning is my favorite way to start puppies! Understanding luring, capturing, and shaping are all important skills our dogs can use to make long term training easier later!

In these videos we’re shaping Kilogram to put her face in a muzzle voluntarily!

Shaping uses context cues and specific rewards of successful approximations to build new skills!

There are some big benefits when it’s done right! There’s no prompts to fade, it can help break down training impasses, build independence and confidence, and build stronger more reliable skills than other methods!

Though there are plenty of benefits it’s not always the most efficient method of training. It requires control over the environment, good marker timing, specific reward placement, and fair criteria adjustments! Make sure you have a trainer around to help you start this skill!

In this post you’ll see Kilo at the very start of this process! First learning that exploring the bowl gets rewarded, then learning that putting her face in the bowl gets her treats! From there we changed to a mug that more closely resembles the tighter fit a muzzle will have. After that was an easy choice we transitioned to offering her nose into a muzzle!

This behavior is far from finished (still waiting on the Kilo-sized muzzle to come in!) but is well on its way and she’s understanding the concept better each session!

Reach out today and nerd out on conceptual dog training today!

Meet Noda!

Noda is an almost three year old Shih Tzu mix who we just started working with! Noda lives in a tight apartment building that’s created some unwanted habits!

Those habits include barking at hallway noises and dog reactivity in those unavoidable tight spaces. He’s also got resource guarding behaviors in select situations!

Noda’s owners are very committed to him and are well on their way to mastering the mechanics of training and redirecting behaviors! This is a fun team to watch figure each other out!

Sensitive dogs like Noda need clear consistent handling and a relationship built on trust that they’ll advocate accordingly for his space, and this team is well on their way there!

Brewery Skills with Chester the Chow Chow!

Chet came to us for a Board and Train after getting rescued from a tough situation! He had lots of big feelings about people and dogs in his space, a bite history, and zero desire to work for food! Chet was very under-socialized and after showing him the world is a safe space he came right out of that shell and started making much better choices.

We made huge progress on all of those fronts during his Board and Train and reconnected with his owners earlier this summer to expand on those now easy skills they’ve kept up with! Our new goal was to make acclimation and application of these new skills easier in busy places like breweries !

Those skills include -
- Polite ways to solicit attention from people!
- Settling around busy activity, like people and dogs in close proximity!
- Polite Greeting skills with new people that don’t involve jumping!

I’m so happy with how far Chester has come since I first met him and know him and his owners are so much happier they can enjoy outings like these together!

Meet Millie! 💕

Millie is a two year old Mini Aussie whose owners reached out to us after she unexpectedly nipped at a visiting family member in the house! She also had a pretty relentless window barking habit at delivery folk and contractors!

Upon meeting Millie we identified some underlying factors that contributed to her bite. We were able to immediately remove some of them with management! We’re addressing her window barking with new alternative behaviors and a proactive training plan!

Millie was experiencing what we call Trigger Stacking. Trigger stacking is when our dogs are unable to decompress between individual small stressors that occur in a window of time. They then add up to the point where a seemingly small stressor causes a big reaction or unprecedented outburst!

After acknowledging those stress factors, and modifying Millie’s routine slightly, her and her owners are well on their way to a long happy life!

Millie’s owners have done a great job of coming together as a family to work on her training and it’s helping immensely! Way to go y’all!!

Nobody likes labels but sometimes they can help us understand our canine counterparts even better! 🐕🐾

Dog sociability is something we can get caught off guard by, because every dog is so different!
What’s happening when our happy go lucky puppy suddenly doesn’t enjoy play groups as much as before? Why does my older dog not want to say hi on walks anymore?

As owners it’s important to remember that sociability may ebb and flow throughout our dogs life and that’s absolutely normal! Factors like play style, breed predispositions, and physical health can impact how willing our dogs are to engage in canine social interactions! They may also have preferences towards types of interactions! Do they like long walks on the beach? Or a WWE match with their best buds?

If you’ve noticed a sudden change in your pup’s demeanor or would like to understand where your pup falls on the spectrum reach out to a reputable trainer (like us!) today!

Sport Puppy Foundations with Yakira (Kiki)!

KiKi spent a couple of weeks with us to jumpstart her future dog sports career! Though our sport foundations training is customized to each puppy’s goals and needs, things like offering attention and happy traveling are always needed!

One of the sports Kiki’s owner plans on doing is French Ringsport, one of the very same sports demo dogs Caicos and Kosovo do! French Ringsport is complex, with varying aspects of obedience, jumping, and protection. Easily switching between toys, practicing offering attention around distractions, and multiple marker systems will all set KiKi up for long term success!

During her visit we worked on -

- Functional toy play skills like switching between toys for fast conflict-free rewards!
- Offering attention around distractions at home and in public!
- Building a multiple marker system to clearly communicate during our training!
- Body awareness games that help to encourage self preservation and practice proprioception!
- Happy crating and settling skills in new places like dog trials and training facilities!
- Enrichment and exposure opportunities to promote happy confident feelings towards novelty!

Multiple marker systems are where we get a little crazy! A marker is the cue to our dogs that we liked their last behavior and a reward is coming! A multiple marker system breaks that down even more by having multiple cues that clarify where the reward will be delivered, if they should keep going or are done, and even what kind of reward is coming! These will always be specific to our individual teams and should aim to clarify our communication!

Yakira is wicked smart, a bundle of enthusiasm, and absolutely something special! It’s already been so much fun watching her grow and I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes when she grows up!

Meet Arlo! 🐾

Arlo’s a two year old Australian Shepherd who originally began working with us to address his car chasing habits and reactivity towards running dogs!

Nowadays Arlo’s car chasing is a thing of the past and his reactivity is continuing to progress in leaps and bounds! We recently added some new goals for him and his owner, because they have high hopes of competing in dog sports soon!

Arlo is now nearly ready for his CGC and building toy skills to compete in canine disc league! He’s already successful in his first group class for nosework too!
I’m excited to watch this team take to the field early next year and compete in their first real competition!

It’s been a pleasure to watch them grow!

Reminder - It is never a bad thing to say “We need some space” or “ We’re not ready to say Hi yet!” if your dog is not in the position to greet either an incoming dog or person! Sometimes that even looks like stepping ahead of your dog to block that incoming excited greeter!

Every dog has their “bubble” and especially when we have training plans in place it is vital to have that bubble remain a safe space! I would much rather you blame your trainer, “we’d love to say hi our trainer says we’re not ready yet!”, than to unintentionally put our dogs in an uncomfortable position!

This is just as important for our excited greeter as it is for our timid puppy! Our timid puppy needs to see that their space will be respected by strangers and advocated for by their person! Knowing we’ve got their back will help that timid pup come out of their shell! Our excited dogs will self reward and pattern quite quickly if they get to say hi to every single person!

No matter the training plan you can always stand up for your pup!

Meet Yakira, a baby Belgian Tervuren!

This little lady is here for a Board and Train for foundational dog sport skills and puppy lifestyle groundwork!

Yakira’s owner has high hopes of competing with her in various dog sport venues, one of them being French Ringsport! This is a bitesport that requires a lot of independent thinking and clear toy mechanics, which is what we’ll start building now!

On top of that she’ll be learning how to travel, settle in her crate, and even see her first dog sport trials!

Though we want her to be successful in her future sports, it’s also import she learns how to do “dog” stuff! Polite greetings, learning how to learn, and safety skills like recalls are just as important as our flashy sports work!

That being said, I have no doubt this little lady can do it all! Keep an eye on our page over the next few weeks to watch Yakira’s progress!

Traveling home with your pup for the holidays? ✈️🐕

Here are some skills that will help you and your dog travel smoothly!

- Have short happy training sessions in a space where your dog can hear and see the airport activities. Cellphone lots are a great place for this! 👏🏼
- Teaching your dog how to settle in public, especially around the hustle and bustle of people will help them relax on long travel days! Matwork is a great way to do this! 💤
- Practice happy kennel skills with your secure travel carrier in new places! Loading in, relaxing, and waiting to come out until released are all separate skills to work on! 🧳
- Creating polite greeting patterns is also a great idea! Someone will undoubtedly want to say hi, and calmly doing that in public can be very hard for our dogs! 👋🏼
- Pottying on cue is an easily forgotten skill that can make or break some people’s travel days! We want to make sure our dog goes potty before going on long flights! 🚽
-Talk to your vet and trainer about your travel plans and see if they have any specific recommendations for you!

Many thanks to Rip the Aussie for rocking his Board and Train for travel skills and showing them off not long after! Him and his owner make a great team!

Meet Rip ! 🦈

Rip’s a teenage Mini Aussie who’s here for a Board and Train to prepare for his owner’s big move! He’ll be moving from farmland to the big city and traveling a lot more often! Thanks to his size he can actually fit in a carrier on a plane, which means we need to prepare some airport skills! Some of Rips goals include-
- Settling in busy public places!
- Going safely through security!
- Going potty on cue!
- Being comfortable being handled by strangers!
- Not jumping on furniture unless invited!
- Crating in public!

We’ve got alot planned for this boy but he’s wicked smart and tons of fun! If you see us in public come say hi so he can practice his greeting skills!

Big Congratulations to Moose and his handler for passing their Canine Good Citizenship test!

These two have come so far in their training, with their initial lessons being focused on dog reactivity! Not only does this test require polite manners with people, but also manners with other dogs and Moose passed with ease! I’m so happy to have been able to test this team and they were more than prepared after working so well together through his other training!

The test items for the CGC include -
- Maintaining position while their handler greets a stranger
-Politely accepting pets when cued to greet
- Stay and Recall from a distance
- Loose Leash Walking
- Reaction to Another Dog
And more!

If you’re interested in the Canine Good Citizenship test reach out today!
