It's hard to leave your pets at home when you have errands to run, but being separated could cause your pet to become overly anxious. It's important to be aware of separation anxiety to help your pet overcome it.

Make sure to schedule an appointment with your VCA veterinarian to discuss how to handle your pet's separation anxiety.

This past weekend a team of our VCA doctors helped the Humane Society of Southwest Washington with their spay and neuter procedures. This partnership not only helps the shelter animals get the medical care they need to be placed in homes faster, but also helps our doctors gain valuable surgical experience. We had four doctors participate in the clinic along with four outstanding members of our veterinary technician team. At VCA we put the future of veterinary medicine first and constantly strive to improve our skills and be the best possible medical team for you and your pets. Great job all!
Surgical mentees: Dr. Yun Ting Agnes Ng (VCA Panther Lake), Dr. Rhianon Desidiri (VCA Crown Hill)
Surgical Mentors: Dr. Terry White (VCA 12 Mile) and Dr. Mary Arpaia (VCA McKenzie)
Technical Staff: Geoffrey Michaels (VCA East Mill Plain), Nica Morgan (VCA 12 Mile), Olivia Whitney (VCA Raleigh Hills), Karen Anderson (VCA Clackamas)

Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds: Is there such a thing??

Even though no canine breed 100% hypoallergenic, there are breeds that are less likely to stimulate allergies. All dogs produce saliva and dander, although some produce less of these. With that being said, breeds that shed less are less likely to make their owners allergies react because the saliva and dander stay on the hair, which stays in the hair follicle. But even hairless dogs produce dander. In the end, it all depends on the dog and the person. Just remember, any dog can stir up allergies, so don’t depend on picking a specific breed to eliminate the allergic reactions.

Today is more than Valentine’s Day … it is also National Pet Theft Awareness Day! There are some very easy things to help prevent the loss of a beloved part of the family:

πŸ’Š Do you struggle giving your cat their medications? Pilling a cat can be challenging, even for the most experienced technician or veterinarian. The easiest way is to hide the pill in food. If you do have to pull you cat by hand, follow these easy steps:
β€’Prepare a safe place for your cat and have the pill ready.
β€’Never interrupt them while eating, eliminating or grooming.
β€’If you are by yourself, it can sometimes be easier to wrap your cat in a blanket or towel.
β€’Hold the pill between your thumb and index finger and gently grab your cats head from above. Place your thumb on one side of the upper jaw and your fingers on the other.
β€’Tilt you cat’s head back over it’s shoulder so the nose points to the ceiling.
β€’With your pilling hand, use your little finger and ring finger to open the mouth by gently placing pressure on the lower lip and teeth.
β€’Quickly place the pill as far back over the tongue as possible and close your cats mouth while returning the head to a normal position.
β€’Gently rub your cats nose or throat to help stimulate swallowing.

Always follow up with positive reinforcement with something your cat enjoys!

February is National Cat Health Month πŸˆβ€β¬›πŸˆ Because of their mysterious nature, many myths or misconceptions have misguided our ideas of cat health care. Here are some examples:

β€’Cats don’t need to see the vet as often as dogs. MYTH! They are excellent symptom hiders and usually by the time we notice anything, they are probably sicker than they appear. Routine health care is vital.

β€’Cats don’t need grooming. MYTH! While they do a great job grooming themselves, this can be a great time to check for lumps, ingrown nails or even changes in their fur.

β€’Cats are solitary who prefer to be left alone. MYTH! True they don’t need to be β€œwalked” but socializing is still important. Most cats love attention, cuddling and snuggling.
