Hi Everyone,
As many of you know, there was an incident at Woodland OLA yesterday that left a dog and a human injured. I wanted to post outside the thread about the incident so everyone can see what action COLA has taken on this matter.
I called Kara Main-Hester this morning (Acting Deputy Director of Seattle Animal Shelter and dog trainer extraordinaire at Ahimsa) and she said there was no report in their database for this attack. I asked her why a report would not be take or filed, and she stated the only reason reports are not filed is if they do not have enough information to act on. They need more than a dog and owner description to take a report. If they have at least the name of the dog, or the first name of the owner, that is a jumping off point, but the ONLY reason a report would not be taken is if there was not enough information. They do not discriminate against breeds either positively or negatively.
When fights like this occur, there are three things you need to do:
Safely try and collect as much info as possible about the offender. Assess the situation, and if you can do so, try and exchange information with the other owner. Listen to hear if the owner says the dog’s name. There was an incident in Genesee OLA where the person whose dog was attacked didn’t feel safe talking to the other owner and didn’t get the name of the dog, but they did snap a picture before they left, and a report was filed off of that.
In instances like this where a human has been bitten, call 911 immediately. If it is only dogs involved, contact animal control to file the report. They have three methods of communication. You can call them at 206-386-7387, email Tracy Bahrakis, Acting Manager of Field Services at [email protected], or you can file a report online at this link: http://www.seattle.gov/customerservice/request.htm.
After contacting animal control or the police, contact you park steward and/or me. My email address is [email protected]. Remember, your steward and I are here to help. Seriously, that is my actual job. I will do everything in my capacity (and then some) to keep our OLAs a safe place for well behaved pups and their people.
This extends beyond Woodland. I am here to be your advocate. I am here to be a resource for you. If you feel unheard by SPR, Seattle Animal Control, WOLF, or even COLA, let me know! Never hesitate to reach out to me. If I don’t know about an issue, there is nothing I can do to solve it, but if you bring it to my attention, I will try and move mountains for you.
