It’s going to be a wet winter! 💦💦

We have been struggling with standing water along the east side of the coop’s run for various reasons. You can see some of the standing water in one of the pictures below.

We installed a French drain today to combat this issue along with a large tarp - we are hoping this will reduce the muddy conditions which will facilitate healthier chicken feet and improve the overall cleanliness of the run. Chickens also love the enrichment of added mulch and pine bark chunks for foraging and scratching- we now have a good amount in the run after today.

Thank you Kate, Trevor, Tegan and Shreck for all your hard work today!

Feed day! 🐔

We go through ~5 bags of layer-feed a month. The amount the flock eats fluctuates with the season as the hens require more nutrition and energy to lay eggs in the spring and summer months. The days are also longer!

The flock is supplemented with greens from Marra Farm and members bring leftover compost and vegetable scraps from their homes. Mealworms and seed blocks are given as an occasional treat!

Hens require adequate calcium to maintain robust eggshells - so crushed oyster is supplied daily. Crushed granite grit is also given to prevent crop stasis and keep the flock healthy.

We recently upgraded to concealed water containers which function by use of a “poultry ni**le system” - this system allows the flock to drink fresh water without contaminating the stored water. We also offer a ni**le system connected to our rain-water cistern.

Together, all of these dietary needs - supplied sufficiently - keep a flock healthy and happy!
