Eastlake Veterinary Hospital was established in 1985 by Dr. Carl Anderson, a longtime resident of Seattle and the Eastlake neighborhood. After practicing six years in a large multiple facility veterinary practice, the idea of a smaller more intimate neighborhood clinic was very appealing. Over the years, the practice and the neighborhood has grown and changed but the goal remains the same — to pro

vide high quality personalized care for our client’s dogs and cats. When Dr. Anderson retired in 2019, he sold the practice to Dr. Alex Shearer who continues to maintain the same goal of providing excellent service to the community, alongside Dr. Mark D'Orazio and Dr. Jody Zawacki who practice at the Eastlake Veterinary Hospital.

Sharing a few holiday tips from Santa and Miso:

🌲 Keep pets away from toxic plants such as holly, poinsettias and mistletoe!

❄️ Check your pet's paws for salt when the walkways are icey! Salt can be harmful to pets so you'll want to wipe their paws when coming inside.

🍫 Be sure chocolate and other toxic foods are out of reach from your pets!

Happy from one of our newest clients, Truffle! To celebrate, Truffle is here to share a few of her favorite fun facts about felines:

🐱 Cats use their long tails to balance themselves when they’re jumping or walking along narrow ledges.

🐱 Cats mark you as their territory when they rub their faces and bodies against you, as they have scent glands in those areas.

🐱 Cats dream, just like people do.

🐱 Each cat’s nose print is unique, much like human fingerprints.

I think we all can agree, cats are pretty amazing. Happy National Cat Day to all of our !

It's "National Vet Tech Week" and Eastlake Vet couldn't run without all of our dedicated staff - so we'd like to introduce you to some of our techs.

First up is Amy! Amy grew up on a small hobby farm with dogs, cats, horses, birds, and other small animals in a small PNW town, near Steven’s Pass. She has worked with a wide variety of animals, specializing in dog training and boarding/daycare. She discovered her love of birds and wildlife after spending a year working at the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka, where she was trained to rescue and handle birds of prey. In her free time, she loves to go hiking, birding, play video games, read, and spend time with her animals — a cat, June Bug and two dogs, Zoey and Haru.

Amy says her favorite thing about being a Vet Tech is "definitely the animals! Knowing that I'm helping them, and helping by being their voice makes every day worth it!"

Another fall has arrived with a COVID backdrop. We remain thankful for your continued understanding and patience with us, as we try to balance caring for our patients and keeping our staff and clients safe and healthy.

Much of the veterinary industry is currently challenged with more patients, increased visits, and staffing shortages. If you've experienced a wait on the phone or in scheduling an appointment, this is likely the reason. But we remain committed to your pet's health and well-being, and to supporting your precious relationship with your best pet friend.

: September is National Pet Insurance Month!

Pet Insurance is always recommended for our furry friends. Depending on your coverage, it can help cover annual costs and those scary emergency visits that my pop up unexpectedly!

There are many pet insurance companies to choose from, all offering different coverage options. We highly suggest doing some research and getting quotes at different companies, so you can pick the plan that works best for you.

: Periodontal disease (gum disease) in dogs can contribute to heart, liver, and kidney disease.

This is the primary reason, along with issues of discomfort, that we may recommend dental procedures for your pet.

Currently, our dental procedures are booking out by around 8 weeks so give us a call sooner rather than later if you think your pet is due for a dental!

: During the pandemic, pet ownership numbers soared to record highs!

In the Seattle area alone, an estimated 130,000 homes brought home a new cat and 43,000 brought home a new dog.

While the pet population is still rising, sadly the veterinary population is not. Which means the physical and mental load on every veterinary professional has significantly grown.

We know that emotions can run high when it comes to our furry loved ones, but we ask that you keep empathy and compassion in mind.

Chia wants to tell everyone about the importance of microchipping!

Microchipping is a form of permanent identification for your pet that cannot be lost or removed. Without ID, 90% of lost pets never return home.

When you have your pet microchipped at Eastlake Vet Hospital, we will automatically register it to your information. Once your pet’s unique number has been registered, it will be good forever!

You can learn more about microchipping on our website:

As temperatures continue to rise, you may need to make small adjustments to keep your pets safe. Pictured is Annabel, ready to share her favorite hot weather tips!

☀️ Keep animals inside as much as possible. For walks outside, stick to grass or early morning walks to prevent burning your pet's paws on hot pavement.

☀️ Make sure your animals have constant access to water.

☀️ Know the signs of overheating! Signs of overheating include but are not limited to excessive panting, bright red or unusually colored gums, lethargy, vomiting, dizziness, and excessive drooling.

☀️ For those of you without air conditioning, you can help cool down your pet by placing damp, cool cloths on their ears, paw pads, belly and armpits.

☀️ You can also place a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan to get cooler air circulating inside!
