Always be sure to check if a plant is pet-friendly before bringing it inside, and if your pup likes to help you garden, always be sure you're aware of what you're planting! 🪻🌷

Dr. Lila Miller was one of the first black women to graduate from Cornell University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. The other was her friend and classmate, Dr. Rochelle Woods. During her junior year Dr. Miller started having severe asthma attacks, was hospitalized, and almost died. She was diagnosed with allergies to many things, the biggest offender being an allergy to horses, which were a subject in many of her classes, as well as being told she was likely to develop allergies to dogs and cats in a few years. Dr. Miller had decided not to pursue veterinary medicine, however thanks to some urging from her mentor, 6 months later she began her work as a shelter veterinarian. She made great strides in her advocacy for animals still in shelters, leading to improved quality of life, and a significant decrease in unnecessary euthanasia. In 1999 she taught the first shelter medicine course at Cornell University, and in 2001 she co-founded The Association of Shelter Veterinarians. Dr. Miller retired in 2019, but she’s still an active advocate for more changes in veterinary medicine.

Happy Valentine's Day! Since we can't give our furry friends a box of chocolates today, we thought it might be nice to make them some special treats! 🥰
Make sure you give these treats in moderation, and double check your ingredients to make sure they're pet-friendly.
(A special note, the 3rd recipe will make a lot of treats, so you may want to halve it, or split it with a friend!)
Have a safe and happy Valentine's day!

Frederick Douglass Patterson was born in October of 1901, orphaned at the age of two, and raised by his oldest sister Wilhemina, who was a school teacher in Texas. Frederick studied veterinary medicine at Iowa State College, graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1923, and then moved on to earn a Master's degree in Veterinary Pathology in 1927. Dr. Patterson taught veterinary science for many years, eventually founding the School of Veterinary Medicine at Tuskegee University in 1944; the same year he founded the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), which continues today as a critical source of yearly income for many Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Dr Patterson passed away in 1988, and his cremated remains are buried on Tuskegee University's campus.

Happy Black History Month from all of us here at NSVC! To honor Black History and celebrate the contributions of Black Americans, we'll be highlighting some notable people in Veterinary history this month!
To start us off, this is Dr. Augustus Nathaniel Lushington. He enrolled at Cornell University in 1890 to study human medicine at first, but his interest in the veterinary field grew. He transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1897 became the first black man to earn the V.M.D degree in the United States. He was a practicing veterinarian for nearly 40 years, primarily in large animal medicine. He passed away in 1939, and the University of Pennsylvania still displays his portrait in their halls today.

Rawhide has been around for a long time, but is it really the best chewable treat for your pals? This article has some great information about the risks of rawhide chews, as well as some good alternatives!

While rawhides may look like a nice treat for your furry friend, veterinarians warn they can do more harm than good.

Welcome to the NSVC team Dr. Nikki! 🩵🐾
Dr. Nikki grew up right outside of Chicago and attended Purdue University (Boiler up!) for her bachelor’s degree in animal sciences. She then moved to the sunny island of Grenada to pursue her veterinary degree. After graduation, she moved to the PNW and has worked as a small animal veterinarian since then. Her veterinary interests include surgery, dentistry, and preventive care.

Dr. Nikki lives in Lynnwood with her human and furry family. She has one kitty from the island, another one from Washington, and two small dogs who think they are 100lbs each! She spends most of her time with her husband and 4-year-old son when she’s not at work.
Her hobbies include crafting, reading (mostly fantasy), watching movies, and traveling. She is a “Disney adult” who hopes to visit every castle eventually! She tries to spend as much time with friends and family as possible.

Everyone please give her a warm welcome! 🩵🐾

To all the wonderful clients of North Seattle's family,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce my departure from North Seattle in the middle of July. It's been an honor meeting you and especially caring for your pets over the past 2 years. Being able to help your furry family members and share a part in their recoveries and victories has made me a better doctor. But it is you, the people behind the animals, that have made me a kinder and more patient human being.

North Seattle Veterinary Clinic is truly a magical place and leaving was a very difficult decision. As some of you know, surgery is my passion and I've been fortunate to be offered a surgical position that offers me more time with my family. Drs. Nathanson, Meredith, Allmendinger, Neer, Bergstrom, and Bruce are some of the most incredible veterinarians I've been blessed to know and your pets are so fortunate to have them. I'm so happy to have met, worked, and most importantly, learned from them.

As a citizen of the Luiseno nation, I truly believe that our paths crossed for a reason and I'm so thankful for that.

Yu' pannupo 'oy tiiwin (Goodbye),
Dr. Elizabeth Nordeen

RIP Wentworth (Our Supreme Leader)

Last week we said goodbye to our beloved Wentworth.

Wenty's life on the street brought him to us and to his true calling- a clinic kitty above all clinic kitties; a soul who spent his 20 years bringing laughter, joy, and love (and lots of drool) to all who knew him. (Even the UPS guy.) He spent his 186 extra lives getting into trouble and knowing he could always get away with it. He enjoyed snugs most of all, and sunbeams a close second. He was kind to other animals and would occasionally force a snug upon them whether they wanted it or not.

Wentworth will live on in our memories and hearts forevermore.
