Thank you so much to those who have emailed [email protected] to ask Seattle City Council to end the violence and s*x trafficking in our North Seattle neighborhoods. You don’t have to live in Seattle to add your voice to this conversation!

People have asked me for ideas on what to write. The message can be short, simple and from your heart. Here are some ideas:

OPENING:
I am writing regarding the (insert adjective of your choice) situation on the Aurora Corridor.

PICK YOUR POINT:
Option A:
Personal story of your own experience or observation along Aurora. Nervous about doing business on Aurora? Live nearby and are considering moving? Been in the car with your mom, your kids, or out of town visitors and struggled to explain why the highway appears to be an open air s*x market? Almost hit a s*x worker on the highway? Witnessed abuse of these women by their pimps—hitting, yelling, etc? For women, have you been harassed by johns as you walk on the sidewalk? For men, have you been approached by a s*x worker--or spit on when you declined?

Option B:
Don’t feel like writing anything. Here’s a solid point to use:
The lucrative criminal enterprise of commercial s*xual exploitation brings violence along with it. Neighbors along this stretch of Aurora deal with the side effects every day: gun shots, shell casings in their yards, the occasional bullet hole in a home or car, condoms, human waste (there are no latrines for the s*x workers), johns blocking their driveways or parking spaces, street racing, threats and assaults.

OR:
Option C:
Aurora is already a dangerous highway without the addition mostly unclothed women walking and dancing in the bus lanes and turn lanes. A person would have to really not care if they live or die to behave that way. This situation is a problem on two levels: First, these people present an additional hazard to drivers. I heard some of these women have been hit by cars. Secondly, why are these individuals being ignored by the law? These women deserve to be protected from the pimps who exploit them for money.

CONCLUSION:
We all deserve to be safe. S*x trafficked women deserve to be safe, drivers deserve to be safe. Neighbors and businesses deserve to be safe as well. It’s time to stop protecting the pimps and reinstate law and order on Aurora!

Now is the time to stand up against the organized crime groups who have brought s*x trafficked women, guns, drugs, and violence to neighborhoods along the Aurora Corridor. The issue isn’t “Not in My Backyard.” The issue is, “Not Anywhere!!”
What you can do?
+ Email your thoughts to City Council at [email protected]
+ Show up to the Public Safety Committee meeting at Seattle City Hall tomorrow August 13th at 9:30am, or attend virtually. The line to speak will form at 8:30 am.

Here’s more information on what Aurora businesses and neighbors are grappling with:

Ideally, s*x work would be legalized and s*x workers protected from exploitation. That won't happen anytime soon, but the situation right now is intolerable and warrants change. At the moment, the law protects the pimps, not the s*x workers, not the neighbors listening to almost nighty gunfire, and not businesses trying to exist against a backdrop of crime and violence.

The elderly couple who own the Rose Corner—right next to Fuzzy Buddy’s—were assaulted by s*x workers in April and the woman ended up in the hospital with a brain injury. At Fuzzy Buddy’s, we often have to tell s*x workers, pimps, and johns to get out of our parking lot. We have intervened when s*x workers need help. This puts us at risk for retaliatory violence as well.

What can you do? Email the City Council and tell them it is time to shut down the organized crime groups operating illegally in our neighborhoods. S*x trafficked women should not be on display—day and night—along our major highway. Neighbors should not hear gunfire almost nightly, should not wake up to shell casings in their yard or bullet holes in their homes or cars. Neighbors should be able to enjoy their front yards in the evening and take walks at dusk with their kids or dogs without fearing for their safety. People who work on Aurora should not need to worry about retaliatory violence.

The proposed legislation may not be perfect, but with collaboration and fine tuning it has a chance to turn this area around. I have no idea why this stretch of Aurora has been neglected and allowed to fall into such a state of lawlessness, but we are ready for change and willing to be loud to make that happen!!
