Meet Kit — The Life of the Party! 🎉🐾

This clever, curious, and endlessly entertaining pup is bursting with personality. Nicknamed “Squirrel Girl” because she’s always up to something, Kit brings joy and laughter to everyone she meets. Whether she’s sneaking your work gloves or staging a heist for your phone, it’s all about the thrill of the chase—and she lives for it! 🐿️💨

Kit has come a long way and is finally showing her true, playful self. She adores being near her people, loves to play, and thrives on attention. She’ll need an energetic human with a good sense of humor who can keep up with her silly antics and zest for life. 🎾

Kit is 10 months old and weighs 60 lbs. We’re still getting to know Kit and will share more updates soon, but one thing is clear: this girl is something special. 💛

This is a team of dedicated volunteers who can step up and step in as fosters for a short period of time — from a few days to a few weeks.

Here are some examples of situations where our foster heroes might be called upon:

🌟 Emergency foster — we sometimes are asked to pull a dog from a kill shelter with very little notice, so will need a place for them to go to for a few days until we can find a long-term foster or a spot opens up at Malley Valley

🌟 Recovery from spay or neuter surgery

🌟 Long-term fosters might need some time off due to medical emergencies, vacation, or previous commitments

Meet Kodiak – Your Next Adventure Buddy! 🐾

Kodiak is a 3-month-old bundle of joy who’s equal parts playful, smart, and affectionate. A true love bug, he adores people and thrives on attention — you’ll rarely find him far from the action!

This little guy is already showing off his good manners: he needs minimal correction, stays out of trouble, and is house-trained with a doggie door. He’s also incredibly smart and eager to learn, making him a great candidate for training and new experiences.

Kodiak LOVES water and can turn any splash into a party. He enjoys playing tug with rope toys, chewing on nylabones and benebones, and exploring the yard — especially if there’s a bush to dive into or a w**d to pull up. Digging is part of the fun for him!

Although he’s curious about the bigger dogs in his foster home, Kodiak prefers to observe from a safe spot when things get too rowdy — yet he remains confident and playful. He’s independent enough to entertain himself, but also happy to engage with people or other pups when he feels like it.

He’d do well as an only dog, especially with people who are ready to shower him with love and attention. Kodiak is also a bit of a social butterfly — he insists that everyone he passes on walks stops to pet him. (Resistance is futile!)

Ready for endless fun, loyal companionship, and a pup who’s up for any adventure? Kodiak is more than ready to meet his forever family.

🐾 Koda Update + Help Needed for Round Two 🐾

We’re thrilled to share that Koda has made it through his first hip revision surgery — and what a journey it’s been!

Thanks to your incredible support, the surgical team was able to perform a complex surgery to repair Koda’s left hip, unfortunately he had to endure the surgery twice due to the hip not settling correctly in the few days post-op. But now, he's home, healing, and taking longer walks each day. He’s eating well, sleeping better, and leaning into the love of his foster family — truly becoming part of their trio. 💙
But Koda’s journey isn’t over.

A second surgery is needed to repair the right hip and give more life to this big, charming guy. So, we are once again reaching out to our amazing community for donations to help fund Koda’s second hip surgery. Every dollar goes toward giving this brave boy the pain-free life he deserves.

Introducing Lexington, a gorgeous 3 year old, 60 lb housetrained Husky.

This sweet, silly, and stunning girl is a total heart stealer! Lexington is a young pup at heart who lives for playtime, belly rubs, and quality time with her humans. The moment you walk into the room, her tail wags, her ears perk up, and she’s ready to show you just how much love she has to give.

Lexington is fantastic with kids and would thrive in a family setting where she can be part of the fun. She’s also a smarty pants who already knows sit, shake, and lay down. Though she gets excited and may jump when she’s really happy she’s very responsive to gentle corrections and eager to please.

This beautiful girl has undergone two hip surgeries and made a phenomenal recovery, you’d never know by watching her run and play! She’s full of energy, incredibly affectionate, and loves to be included in whatever you’re doing.

A Few Things To Keep In Mind:

*Lexington isn’t a fan of cats and would do best in a feline free home

*She tends to be selective with other dogs especially older dogs but may be a good match with younger dogs after a proper meet-and-greet.

*She may try and bolt out the door when excited so she’ll need some extra mindfulness around open doors until she settles in and bonds with her people.

Lexington has so much love to give and just needs a family who will give her the structure, patience, and snuggles she craves. Could she be the perfect match for you?

Mina came into our rescue in Cashmere, WA on November of 2023. While she has been with us for a little more than a year and half, she continues to be in good spirits and easy to manage. Her energy level skews to the low side. While she loves getting out for hikes and social interaction, she is also quite content hanging out and watching the nature around her. She prefers to be outside and often has to be coaxed into her kennel at the end of the day. True to her breed, Mina loves the snow and cold weather and is happiest when winter arrives!

We cannot figure out why Mina has been overlooked for adoption. The only possible concern is that she has a minor congenital foot deformity on one of her front legs. We have had this checked out by our vet and there is nothing requiring medical attention. Normally, this does not bother her or interfere with her activities (see links to videos), but her foot can become sensitive/irritated if she spends a significant amount of time walking or running on concrete or hard surfaces. However, she has been hiking on natural dirt trails with both volunteers and her fosters and has done really well with no incidence. Mina's videos show her running and playing with toys in our grassy playfield. She is very good at entertaining herself!

Mina deserves to find a permanent home of her own and if you think that you might be able to provide that for her, please reach out to us to schedule a meet and greet.

Don’t let the not so serious face fool you—Hades might look like a cattle dog, but he’s got the goofy, loving soul of a Malamute! 💙 He’s all about the snuggles, the sillies, and the scenic strolls.

🌿 Hades is a country boy at heart. He recently tried out apartment life, but city noise? No thanks! He’s much happier with birdsong over honking horns. A few short walks a day keep him happy, but he really lights up on a peaceful hike or chill car ride (windows cracked, ears flapping = bliss).

🎓 This smart cookie knows a ton of commands! Classics like “sit” and “stay”, cuddly ones like “hug” and “kiss”, and even fun party tricks like “dance” and “go through” (yes, he’ll do a little tunnel dash between your legs). His vocabulary is almost as impressive as his cuddles.

🐶 Hades gets along well with other large dogs and might be cool with a dog sibling, but he’d also be thrilled to soak up all the love as your one-and-only. He’s got some puppy zest left in him and a heart full of love to give.

🛏️ Bonus: He’s a pro cuddler and would love nothing more than to share your bed and be your #1 sidekick in a quiet, cozy home.

Meet Rocky!

Rocky is a 6 year old, 80-pound Malamute Mix who is ready for his forever home! He is neutered and fully vetted. Rocky is a sweet boy who is eager to please! He enjoys training and knows some commands, including "sit" and "down." He is full of energy, loves to play, yet is also affectionate and loves snuggle time.

He is very exuberant and loves to meet people. Rocky needs an experienced dog owner; someone with knowledge of the Malamute or Husky breed would be beneficial. He would love a family that is very active so he can go on runs, hikes and more.

Rocky has lived in two different homes with other dogs. While he gets along with most dogs, he has been competitive with another "alpha" male in one of the homes which has led to few scuffles. He would likely to well with another dog of similar size that does not insist on being the "alpha." He can be too much for small dogs, as Rocky doesn’t always seem to be aware of his size. Rocky would be fine in a home where he is the only dog but still able to have socialization with other dogs. He may do well with one other dog in the home who is compatible energy-wise and will tolerate his playfulness.

We prefer a home without small children only because they could accidentally be knocked over. We are insisting on a home with no cats, as we have not observed him around kitties. A yard and a strong, very tall fence are an absolute must for this boy.

Overall, Rocky's foster parents have described him as very sweet and affectionate!

Our story

WAMAL is a 100% volunteer run non-profit which serves Washington and Oregon. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and locations. In 2019, through an extremely generous donation from one of our supporters, we were able to open up our own small shelter where we are currently able to take in up to 8 rescues dogs. We use commercial kennels and foster homes for additional pups. The average number of dogs we have at any time ranges from 20-30, of all ages but rarely under 8 months old. Our adoption process involves an application followed by a home visit where we discuss the adoption process, answer questions and make sure applicants can provide a safe, loving and pet involved home for our rescues!

It takes a tremendous amount of volunteering to make WAMAL rescue possible and we open our homes and hearts to Malamutes in need. We are always looking for others who would like to help, in whatever form or amount of time people can donate. This organization is only able to do what we do because of this generous and dedicated team of volunteers - they truly make it possible to save the lives of this gentle and loving working breed.
