French bulldogs have been all the rage recently. In fact, they were named the most popular dog breed in the U.S. in 2022!

With their rise in popularity came a hefty price tag on the breed. French bulldog owners suffered from theft, sometimes even violent theft, of their dogs!

Beyond theft, other corruption arose from the popularity of the French bulldog, including the increase in backyard breeders.

When Asher from the Asher House in Oregon heard about a French bulldog breeder who was done breeding his dogs, he wanted to ensure the dogs had a nice retirement.

Asher shared on YouTube that the breeder insisted on selling the last of the puppies, but he didn't want the parents anymore. They weren't as profitable as puppies would be. The four dogs were being kept in tiny cages and used to produce puppies, but once they were no longer producing puppies, the breeder didn't want them anymore.

Asher convinced the breeder to give him the adult dogs. It wasn't easy, and it took weeks of back-and-forth before the person finally agreed to hand over the dogs.

In the end, Asher was able to pick up all four dogs, and he immediately got them out of the crates and started getting them used to "real life," where they didn't have to live like that any longer.

Asher explained in his video that the dogs were "very nervous" due to their lack of socialization. The dogs had only ever met their owner, since they were locked away and used to breed their whole lives. Now, they can finally unwind and enjoy life as a dog should: in freedom.

Working in animal rescue can be heartbreaking. You never know what kind of tough situations you're going to encounter. Despite that, it's incredibly rewarding work. When a dog goes from being near lifeless to thriving, all the pain and work from the job becomes worth it.

When rescuers with Animal Aid Unlimited in India received a call about a dog lying in a sewage drain, they knew they had to act fast.

They shared about the rescue on YouTube, saying that they found the dog "forlorn and worried, sitting perfectly still as the cold sewage water rushed past him."

When the rescuers lifted him from the drain, they didn't see any visible injuries. But it wasn't long before they noticed that the dog, who they named Hopper, was unable to stand on his hind legs.

They said, "We hurried him back to Animal Aid so that our team could determine what was wrong. We found that his hind legs were not responding when we checked for sensation by pinching his toes with a forcep. He was also not able to stand on his hind legs and had no proprioception, indicating spinal injury."

Spinal injuries in dogs can be incredibly difficult to treat. Every so often, though, there's a miracle story of a dog recovering and relearning to walk.

The rescue shared, "Spinal injuries have different rates of recovery depending on the severity, and we were honestly worried by the lack of sensation in his toes. But we gave him a chance and began his bedrest and physical therapy in hopes that the sensation and movement would come back to his legs."

It took weeks of daily work and therapy before Hopper could stand. But in the end, the dog surprised everyone!

Not only did he relearn how to stand on his legs, but he learned how to run and play!

His hind legs still have some paralysis, so Animal Aid Unlimited decided to offer him a permanent home with them, where he's free to be a dog without the worries of life on the streets.

A dog spotted living with a pack of coyotes in Nevada has been rescued and is now on his way to his new forever home.

While coyotes are a common sight in Nevada, a domesticated dog living amongst them is not.

This past summer, people living in the city of Henderson kept seeing an all-white dog traveling with a local coyote pack.

While he seemed happy and was always wagging his tail, the dog was not in the best of shape and needed human intervention. He was seen limping around, but would constantly evade humans, which is how he got his name: Ghost.

Rescuers believe that he was dumped as a puppy, and some think he may have even been the leader of the coyote pack.

Since no one was ever able to catch him, professional trappers were brought in to help. Since Ghost had been limping and looked weak, trappers feared that the coyotes would eventually turn on Ghost, which is why they made it a priority to catch him.

Finally, after two weeks, trappers were finally able to catch him using a trap baited with food.

Sadly, his condition was much worse than they suspected. In addition to his limp, he also had infected bites all over his body, a broken toe that needed to be amputated, injured genitalia, and a bad skin rash.

His stomach was also filled with rocks, which means he must've been starving and was unable to find real food to eat in the wild.

He was brought for immediate medical treatment at the Amor Peludo rescue in Las Vegas and is now doing much better.

Although Ghost was thought to be living with the coyotes for at least six months, his past as a domesticated pup became apparent once they took him in.

Rescuers said he is very sweet and loving, and loves to be pet and held.

He is currently under the care of The Animal Foundation shelter in Las Vegas and already has potential adopters.

Weirdly enough, I found my rescue cat on Facebook. A friend posted a picture of Bernie, who was about to become homeless after the death of his person.

He had already been on his own for about two months, with a couple of kind people coming around to leave food and water for him in the garage of his person’s home, but now the house was on the market and he had to find a new home or just become a homeless cat or get taken to a shelter.

His caretakers didn’t think this was a good option for him as he was an older guy at about 8-years-old and not at all sociable.

I had lost my beloved 15-year-old cat to lymphoma last summer and was ready to share my home with a new cat. I thought a mature cat would be preferable to a kitten, since I’m out most of the day and have plenty of stuff for a kitten to destroy. Cats have always found me, rather than the reverse, and it seemed like fate placed his picture where I could see it.

Little did I realize how feral and difficult Bernie was...

Is this a trend or what? Recently, we've seen a number of stories where a dog or a cat has leapt into a vehicle looking for help or flat-out rescue from their situation. Well, it's happened again, and this time it's a dog in Wisconsin.

A lost, or more likely abandoned, dog found herself alone in a park where she was apparently spotted and reported to local police. When an officer from the Platteville Police Department arrived at Moundview Park and opened the door to exit the vehicle, the female dog came bounding up and hopped right in.

Detailed on the department's page, they noted, "This sweet girl came right over to the officer and jumped in the squad."

The responding officer carefully inspected the cute canine after she sprang inside the cruiser and saw that the animal was wearing a pink dog collar with a handwritten note attached stating, "Please help, take me to a shelter." Almost as an aside, it included the words "My name is Lola."

One could assume it's a case of abandonment, which is illegal in Platteville. In a post, the department asked for the public's assistance in finding Lola's original owners, adding that, "We would like to speak with them."

In the meantime, the authorities have taken Lola in as they further investigate her background and the circumstances surrounding her appearance. If anyone recognizes Lola or her name, it could go a long way toward helping them in their attempts to unravel the mystery of how Lola came to be in Moundview Park with a note attached to her collar.

No one should jump to conclusions regarding how she got to where she is today. As one commenter posted, "This really struck me as a call for help for the dog and possibly the owner. My prayers you can find them."

Another noted, "At first this looks pretty bad, but what if there is an abusive household member and someone is trying to get the dog away from them without consequences to themselves?" Several others were worried about the welfare of the owner(s) as well.

Regardless of how this spunky and proactive girl got to be where she is now, we hope that she ultimately ends up safe and protected with the people who will love her the most in life.

When you see R***r today, you would never know how close this sweet puppy came to a horrible death as a result of neglect and starvation. He must have had angels watching over him from above that sent angels here on Earth to save him. This is a story of an amazing transformation.

On a cold March day, police officers discovered an emaciated dog that had been left outside in a crate that was too small for the dog’s size - they immediately contacted animal control. If not for the quick actions of the police officers and the animal control officer, R***r surely would have died. When the animal control officer saved him, she noted that he was covered in urine and f***s, but she was so moved by this little guy, she didn’t hesitate to pick him up in her arms to carry him to safety.

Subsequently, American Belgian Malinois Rescue (ABMR) received an urgent email asking if they could take a 4-month-old puppy that was just brought in as a part of a neglect situation. The photos they sent were heart wrenching - R***r was skin and bones, and his eyes were so imploring. ABMR immediately reached out to one of their best foster homes, and after one look at his photos, Kim was ready to drop everything to pick him up from the shelter.

Kim was brought to tears when she met R***r. She drove him home and made him comfortable while she started the prescriptive diet recommended by the vets at the shelter and then gently bathed him to remove all of the urine and f***s. Kim got him to the vet the next day.

When the vet examined R***r, they found that in addition to being severely emaciated and having significant muscle loss, R***r's blood values were out of normal ranges, and he had gastric ulceration, orthopedic abnormalities, severe plaque on his teeth (vet was worried that he would lose his teeth) and burns on his body from laying in his urine and f***s.

The vet did x-rays and reported that based on his growth plates, he was not 4-months-old but closer to 7- to 8-months-old. He only outwardly appeared to be so young due to the severe neglect. The vet told Kim that she was amazed that R***r was still alive.

There was much worry that his bloodwork would indicate that he had permanent organ damage, but although his levels were out of whack, thankfully, the vet said it didn’t appear that he would have permanent organ damage. However, the orthopedic vet that examined him said that he would have life-long orthopedic issues.

After he'd been with Kim a few days, she noticed he was having respiratory distress, and she rushed him to the emergency vet. When examined, they diagnosed him with pneumonia, canine infectious respiratory disease complex and infectious tracheobronchitis. They felt he was so unstable that they wanted to keep him a few days to provide supportive care.

The pneumonia was especially concerning because R***r was in such poor condition and his immune system was compromised, so his little body did not have the ability to adequately battle the pneumonia. It seems that there was a highly contagious respiratory bug running through the shelter, and poor R***r picked it up while he was there.

As you can imagine, this kind of emergency vet care is expensive. Rescue setup a fundraiser for R***r, and the wonderful ABMR family donated the funds to pay for R***r’s intensive care. The amazing ABMR family also sent lots of love and prayers - it is hard to put a value on this, but it unmistakably made a positive difference.

Kim brought R***r home after his stay at the emergency hospital and nursed him through the pneumonia with the help of her wonderful vet, but poor Kim also found that all of her personal dogs also came down with this respiratory bug, and she had to nurse them back to health, as well. Luckily, all of her personal dogs have recovered. And due to Kim’s amazing care, R***r not only recovered from the pneumonia, but he has also put on much needed weight.

R***r is now flourishing thanks to R***r’s Angels. A very heartfelt thank you to all of R***r’s Angels: the police officers and animal control officer that saved him, the shelter staff that gave him immediate medical attention and contacted ABMR to pull R***r, the vets at the emergency hospital and Kim’s personal vet, and the ABMR family that donated to his medical expenses and sent lots of prayers and positive energy to him.

A special ‘thank you’ to one of our ABMR family that was so touched by R***r’s story. She has been his greatest supporter and friend through R***r’s journey. And last but certainly not least, a huge thank you to Kim, his foster mom, who has been his most amazing angel of all. Rescue can be so difficult as we come across so many inhumane and uncaring humans that it casts a dark shadow on humankind. But rescue is also where we find the most exceptional humans - like R***r’s Angels.

Losing a beloved human is hard on any dog, but especially senior dogs. Oftentimes, the dogs are surrendered to a shelter and must grieve alone in an unfamiliar place.

This is sadly what Cooper, a 22-year-old poodle mix, is going through.

The sweet boy’s mom passed away unexpectedly, and he hopes someone will come along and give him a loving home for the rest of his life.

A few days before Easter one year, my mom called to tell me that a small kitten had wandered into her yard. I already had two cats, yet I felt as if I needed to give this little kitty a home.

Mom was going to try to catch the kitten and feed it until I could get home for Easter. Unfortunately, she was unable to catch the kitten and had not seen it since, and thus assumed it had found another home. I was quite disappointed and was unable to stop thinking about this little kitty. I shrugged it off and figured it was not meant to be.

On Easter weekend, my parents and I were going to meet at my grandmother's to have dinner. My parents live about 60 miles from my grandmother. They had a few errands to run, including a trip to the grocery store, a cellular provider, and Walmart.

When my parents arrived at my grandmother's house, I ran out to help them with the groceries. I heard this faint meow, and out from under their truck came this dusty little kitten, who promptly ran right up to me.

My mom said, "Oh my! That is the kitten that was in the yard the other day!" The kitten had ridden over 60 miles on the spare tire under the truck. My parents were shocked, as they were at some stores for almost an hour, yet the kitten never left her hiding place.

The kitten was all tail and legs with an adorable heart-shaped nose. Her tail was ringed like a lemur, which didn't feel right to name her. Instead, I named her Monkey.

When I was leaving to go back home, I opened my car door, and Monkey ran and jumped in. (Something you do not usually see with a cat!) She slept in my lap the whole two hours home, and has been part of my family ever since.

Randy was left behind by his owners.

On his own to fight the elements as well as predators, Randy spent one full winter outside with no shelter. He had to find food where he could. The following summer the neighbors noticed him and realized he was hurt.

Randy had been attacked by another animal that had left him with a face that was unrecognizable. His wounds were oozing with infection and his eye was swollen shut.

It took several months for Randy’s injuries to heal...

As I was driving to work one morning on a very busy road, I noticed an animal on the shoulder of the road that had been hit. However, as I passed it, it popped it's little head up.

I immediately stopped, turned around, and drove back to this little creature. I grabbed a blanket from my trunk and cradled the pup and put him in the car next to me.

By now, I was petting my new friend Buddy and telling him all would be okay. I pulled over and called every vet I could Google but I was told they were not allowed to treat wild animals...

In August 2019, I went to the vet with my other dog for a routine visit. In the waiting room, there was a person with a Belgian Malinois puppy that was all over the place. The person asked if we could do training together since we had the same breed of dog. I said, "Sure."

Two days later, we met at the park. The person handed me the leash, and without saying a word, just walked away. At that moment, I realized I just gained another puppy. Neither she nor the previous owner looked back at each other.

I was so impressed, surprised, and appalled by the trust the previous owner had in me, since we had met in the waiting room at the vet only two days prior.

Once renamed Ziti, I realized she was 3-months-old, had all her vet records at the same vet we had and she was extremely shy from living outside only. Fast forward four years later, Ziti has complete trust in our family.

She lives inside, except for when she is performing her ranch duties - looking out over the pasture. She is in training to be a family member's service dog, loves to watch over her ranch with horses, and has boundless amounts of energy.

Ziti and her previous owner really taught me that blind trust is the way things have to go sometimes to do what is best for each other. I personally do not agree with how the situation came to be, but I am so grateful that she literally was just given to me. I did not know how much I needed her in my life until a few months after I was handed that leash, in a park, and in complete silence.

As the war continues in Ukraine, animals continue to be caught in the crossfire. Thankfully, there are brave and kindhearted people on the ground who go out of their way to care for abandoned and injured animals.

Meet Zubik.

He was found chained outside in a private yard in Kharkiv near the frontlines. When the State Emergency Service (SES) of Ukraine found him, he had a severe injury to his front leg from a missile strike.

They freed him and then fed and cared for him until rescuers from Home of Rescued Animals, also known as the Domivka Shelter, arrived. They took the sweet boy back to Lviv to be examined by a veterinarian.

Zubik's leg was too damaged to save, and the only option was to amputate. He will now need to learn how to be a tripod dog and has a long road of recovery ahead.

The shelter is doing their best to care for all animals in need but can't do it alone. With your support, Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund is providing grants to help cover the medical costs and ongoing care for Zubik and other animals like him.

Help us raise funds to cover his medical bills and rehabilitation costs. He has been through so much already and deserves a second chance at happiness.

The shelter faces another issue as they head into winter - keeping the animals warm. They are in desperate need of heaters to keep the animals safe as frigid weather moves in. They are also in need of veterinary equipment to care for the current animal resident and the new ones that arrive in need of medical attention.

It takes a village...

Liberated areas of Ukraine are being combed over for survivors, including animals. Many of the survivors have endured unimaginable pain and suffering but refuse to give up.

Meet Bonnie.

This resilient dog suffered for months after being hit by a car and was finally rescued by Home of Rescued Animals who sent a team with humanitarian aid and to search for animal survivors in liberated Kherson. They discovered the sweet dog alive but in dire need of medical care.

He was found alongside a road and unable to move. The team rescued him and were determined to do everything in their power to help him recover.

Bonnie was transported back to the shelter in Lviv where the veterinarian discovered his pelvis was crushed and his lumbar vertebrae were severely displaced. It was going to be a long and expensive road to recovery, but rescuers refused to give up.

He will need multiple surgeries to repair the damage and give him the best chance at walking again on his own. The first surgery will fuse together his pelvic bones. The next surgery will involve adding metal pins to alleviate pressure from a hernia that has compressed his spinal cord and gently separating the vertebrae.

With your continued support, Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund will provide grants to cover his medical bills and ongoing care. There are so many animals like Bonnie that need medical care and deserve a second chance.

Help us raise funds and show him that people haven't forgotten about him.

The sweet fella is finally safe and with his fighting spirit will walk on his own again. Both surgeries were a success, but he has a long road of recovery ahead. Help us cover his medical expenses and give him the second chance he deserves.

The shelter is also in need of additional supplies to care for the animals. With winter approaching, they need heaters to keep the animals safe and warm and veterinary supplies to continue to care for all the animals in need.

It could have had a very different outcome. If it were not for the kindness of strangers and a vet who said ‘no’ to euthanasia, this brave stoic little girl named Lucy would not now be embarking on what promises to be the very best years of her life.

February 2023: A frantic message from an animal shelter in Brisbane, Queensland, to me in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. "Can you help us? We have a six-year-old female Airedale, surrendered by an owner who wanted her euthanised."

The reason for surrender? Lucy had taken fright, leapt a fence, and got caught by the hind leg, which twisted and broke at the ankle. She hung upside down until rescued, and then she was taken to the local vet in a very serious condition.

Enter the animal shelter and an immediate transfer to Queensland Veterinary Specialists. Surgery estimate: $3000-plus just to stabilise the joint and assess prognosis, along with a possible amputation. The shelter said, "Go ahead, stabilise the leg. We’ll find the money somehow."

Enter AireNet Australia the following morning, Friday, and a flurry of phone calls and messages, first to agree we would take full responsibility for her, and second to find a Brisbane foster home immediately, to liaise with the hospital and AireNet for the journey ahead. The leg was saved, the foot and ankle joint pinned internally and externally with a metal superstructure that looked like something from outer space, and Lucy was assessed as ready for discharge late on that Friday night.

As always, AireNet people never say no. In a matter of hours, at the end of a very busy Friday, our two foster dads, Nathan and Heath, stepped up. Late that night, they took home brave Lucy. Dressed in a large Elizabethan collar, with colourful vet wrap supporting the extraordinary frame on her foot, she responded with surprising sweetness. Instructions were to keep her quiet, reassured, and as calm as possible.

Thus, from February to October 2023, with the devoted care from her foster dads and backed by funding from AireNet Australia, Lucy embarked on an incredible journey of recovery: Numerous visits to the vet hospital to x-ray and monitor the repair of the joints, ligaments and bones; metal implants both internal and external that amazingly Lucy did not try to detach, uncomfortable though they were; internal infection around the joint that caused considerable concern; and all the while, her happy disposition and love of cuddles sustained her entire team of carers. Every cent of the more than $10,000 that was needed for Lucy could not have been better spent.

Her final visit to her favourite vet, Dr Tim, was in early October. Pronounced healed and good to go, against all odds, Lucy now walks steadily, if a little lopsidedly, adores her foster family and now her very own Mum Judy and Dad Kevin, and has the brightest of futures ahead. While it was a heart-wrenching decision by her foster dads to let her go, they knew it was the right thing to do... and opens the door for another "Lucy" to receive the same love and care sometime soon.

Lucy the Wonder Airedale is very much the poster girl for AireNet Australia. We could not be more proud of her strength and her determination to live and to love every day for the rest of her life. A tale of transformation that makes our hearts sing.
