It was on a rainy night a little over a year ago when my mom and brother came home with this skinny small dog, Django, who stole my heart the first time I saw him, giving me a kiss and wagging his tail.

My mom almost ran him over when she was picking up my brother from practice, and the little dog was so afraid that he just stood there in the middle of the road. At home, we already had another rescue dog, Zida, and my dad had his mind set on not having any other dog, but my mother couldn't resist him and my dad fell in love with him as fast as all of us.

The morning after when we looked at him, we saw why he had run away...

I found Duke online at one of the local shelters. He’s an Akita, Chow, Husky mix that looks like a big black bear. We got to the shelter later than we expected for our appointment to see him.

When I did not see the dog in his enclosure, I asked the woman at the front desk if he had been adopted. “No,” she said, “there has been an incident.”

It seems that Duke (an intact male) was placed outside and somehow got into an altercation with an intact male pit bull. The pit did not hurt Duke when he attacked, but Duke managed to send the pit for stitches. So, Duke was now in isolation for 5 days. Worse yet, the director of the shelter scheduled Duke to be euthanized.

There was no reasoning with him and his decision was final but...

For 12 years, I was passed to 3 different parents on a small island in the Bahamas. When the last “Mom” moved in with her boyfriend and a d-o-g, I’d had enough. I decided I’d rather live under the old house and take my chances. I did this for 3 long years. I survived the heat, cold, torrential rain–even hurricanes. And I’d get lonely and go out to the street looking for attention.

Everyone on the island knew who I was. Many would pass by. Some would even pet me, and I relied on the local “cat ladies” to feed me. But I got bored living under that house. So, I became the island cat from hell, or “devil cat” as some of the locals called me!

Dogs provided a distraction. I could chase the big ones and bite them in the butt, or I could ride the smaller ones home. One day I decided to pick a fight with two Jack Russell’s and a Golden Retriever. Silly dogs. I won. When I stopped at the church, covered in blood, that’s when my life changed. I was taken to the vet. I only had a small bite on one leg–the blood was not mine!

You both did not want an ORANGE cat, and--after the two mini rescued tortoiseshell girl cats you'd had--probably didn't want a 25-pound giant male cat, either. But yet you agreed to take me, at least until the stitches healed. I think at first you were a bit intimidated by me, and I don't blame you. After all, I was a big cat with a bad reputation and attitude!

I pulled the screen door to your apartment open, flopped on the floor, and soon worked my way into your hearts. And the best part of MY life began. You and “Dad” showed me love and spoiled me rotten. I got brushed every day. I got fresh fish treats in the afternoon, and I found a warm, safe place to sleep at night--next to you, under your arms.

When you moved away from the Bahamas, you brought me with you. My first boat ride, airplane ride, and then the beginning of car rides across the USA! How many of my Bahamian kitty buddies can say they've been thru 22 states? I loved the car rides!

Wasn't I the best behaved? I knew to use the litter box before we started driving, I knew to eat and drink at rest stops, and I knew when to jump into my carry bag to go into the hotels. During the drives, I loved sitting on your lap the entire time. And I got to come back to the island twice more as a tourist!! How cool was that?

The condo in Washington state was nice. I loved the rare sunny days on the back balcony, but the cool, rainy weather fired up my arthritis and hip dysplasia. You had accepted me even though I was old, but then you discovered I had diabetes and had to give me expensive shots twice a day. Still, you were willing to do anything to try to make me well. You even slimmed me down to 17 pounds. If I was still a Bahamian cat, I know I probably wouldn't have survived very long.

When you took me to the desert (Palm Springs), I felt at home. Warm sunny days, dry air, I seemed almost healed. My favorite memories will always be sleeping on the sun lounge on the back deck, watching birds and lizards.

You understood when I howled to be lifted up because I could no longer jump. You bought me a ramp to get up to the bed. You gave me medicines and kept trying to find a cure for me. And kept giving me fresh fish and treats and love. And knowing how my life was made so much better because of the two of you, I became the most loving, sweetest, and the smartest cat you'd ever meet.

I would greet you at the door when you'd been away. I'd come out and meet your friends. I would follow you around to be next to you, touching you, and sleeping between you guys at night, as close to you both as I could get. I couldn't have been happier. You knew that, though. My purrs were so loud I'd wake you sometimes.

And when things got harder for me, you still loved me through my pain and accidents. But finally, you knew it was time. You had both done everything you could, and you cried a lot making the decision, but we all knew it was for the best. I went in peace, surrounded by love. I know I will always be in your hearts, and you will stay forever in mine.

Thank you for taking in an older stray. You made the last 6 years of my life the best ever, and I love you for it.

Love, Tommy (from Hope Town, Abaco; Vancouver, WA; and Rancho Mirage, CA.)

A boater named Junior Cook was cruising by the tiny Canadian isle, near Cross Keys, Manitoba, when he heard noises coming from the uninhabited land.

Deb Vandekerkhove, director of the rescue, told CBC, “He and his friend were out and it was getting dark already, and they heard some noises on the island. They took their binoculars and they couldn’t see anything but some dark shadows, and they heard a bunch of crying. They thought originally it was wolves.”

He returned the next day, as he was worried by the cries he heard. He could not believe his eyes...

Meet Tonka Butters (Tonka for short). The sweet one-year-old French bulldog mix arrived as a stray at an animal shelter in Norman, Oklahoma, in desperate need of medical care.

This poor boy had a severely pr*****ed re**um, as well as the condition known as “cherry eye” — swollen and protruding eyelid glands. The shelter put out a plea for help in the rescue network and Friends With Four Paws stepped up to help.

Without their help, he was at risk of euthanasia due to his medical needs...

How could a tiny kitten that only weighs a mere 1.3 pounds have such a salacious story about his battle for a healthy life? Well, it begins with him and his siblings being taken away from their mom too early so that they didn't get all that they needed from her.

When kittens lose or are removed from their mom, they not only lose their nutrition that she would have supplied, they lose their comfort practice of nursing, and they miss their mom's bite inhibition training. This litter deprived of mom's growth support ended up creating a serious health issue for Benjamin Buttons.

Tiny Benjamin Buttons has three siblings that in lieu of nursing on mom, began nursing on Benjamin Buttons' p***s. This can create a wince or a giggle when you hear the story, but what was created for Ben was a lot of pain and scar tissue. It is very dangerous for anybody to not be able to eliminate waste.

Suffering, tiny Benjamin Buttons had to be separated from his siblings and taken to the veterinarian, where he had to endure trying a catheter to help him urinate, get shots and take medications. Please remember this is a very wee lad and only just a bit over 1 pound.

Our dear Benjamin Buttons will have to continue to receive medical care, including laser treatments and treatments that no one would want to share about with others. We are very happy to report that he is a trooper and he is patient with his treatments and seems to know that everything being done to him is to help him.

He has had a reduction in his swelling, and he is continuing to put litter to good use. This is a slow recovery injury, especially for a little growing body, so he will need much more medical care. It will be thrilling to see Benjamin Buttons develop into the age of adoption, our hearts are shining brightly for him. We need more positive energy, light and support for this minikin champion.

Meet Novak. He has endured unimaginable cruelty but remains the sweetest boy.

The young chocolate lab was often seen in Colgate, Oklahoma, walking up to the front porch of homes looking for attention, food, and water. He would even approach people on the street for some pats.

A concerned citizen and former rescuer reached out to foster-based rescue, A Lab for Life, for help. The rescue was at max capacity at the time but said they would reach out as soon as there was an opening. They asked the person to keep an eye on the dog and they would be in touch.

Two weeks later, there was an opening so the CEO of A Lab for Life reached out the woman. She said the dog was shot and ran off into the woods. Several volunteers were searching for the dog and a few days later he reappeared in desperate need of medical attention.

The rescue picked up Novak and rushed him to the vet. They told us, "Upon initial examination, Novak was determined to have a fractured jaw and several broken teeth. He also had a rampant infection in his mouth. The vet noted a bullet wound in his side and his face."

The pup was started on IV fluids and went into emergency surgery to remove the bullet that was still lodged in his jaw. This is just the first of several surgeries he will need to repair the extensive damage caused by the bullet.

He remains on antibiotics to clear up the infection and reduce swelling as the rescue contacts specialists to schedule the surgery to remove 7 broken teeth and repair his fractured jaw.

They reached out to Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund for help with his medical bills. The fund helps save the lives of shelter animals in need of medical care and gives them the second chance they deserve.

Novak has a long road of recovery ahead and his foster family will be with him every step of the way. Even though he doesn't feel well enough to play with other dogs, he enjoys being around them and rolling in the grass. He loves belly rubs and carries soft toys around the house. Despite all he has been through, he still trusts humans and want to be around them.

"Novak is a loving, kind and resilient boy who has shown love and affection despite his physical pain and discomfort. At the moment, Novak is not able to eat "normal" dog food and requires "gruel". If this surgery does not take place, Novak will have persistent infections and malnourishment due to his inability to eat," shared the rescue.

UPDATE - Thanks to you support, Novak's medical treatments have been fully funded!
