As the war continues in Ukraine, animals continue to be caught in the crossfire. Thankfully, there are brave and kindhearted people on the ground who go out of their way to care for abandoned and injured animals.

Meet Zubik.

He was found chained outside in a private yard in Kharkiv near the frontlines. When the State Emergency Service (SES) of Ukraine found him, he had a severe injury to his front leg from a missile strike.

They freed him and then fed and cared for him until rescuers from Home of Rescued Animals, also known as the Domivka Shelter, arrived. They took the sweet boy back to Lviv to be examined by a veterinarian.

Zubik's leg was too damaged to save, and the only option was to amputate. He will now need to learn how to be a tripod dog and has a long road of recovery ahead.

The shelter is doing their best to care for all animals in need but can't do it alone. With your support, Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund is providing grants to help cover the medical costs and ongoing care for Zubik and other animals like him.

Help us raise funds to cover his medical bills and rehabilitation costs. He has been through so much already and deserves a second chance at happiness.

The shelter faces another issue as they head into winter - keeping the animals warm. They are in desperate need of heaters to keep the animals safe as frigid weather moves in. They are also in need of veterinary equipment to care for the current animal resident and the new ones that arrive in need of medical attention.

It takes a village...

Join us in lending a helping hand to the innocent animals and the dedicated people working to save their lives.

Liberated areas of Ukraine are being combed over for survivors, including animals. Many of the survivors have endured unimaginable pain and suffering but refuse to give up.

Meet Bonnie.

This resilient dog suffered for months after being hit by a car and was finally rescued by Home of Rescued Animals who sent a team with humanitarian aid and to search for animal survivors in liberated Kherson. They discovered the sweet dog alive but in dire need of medical care.

He was found alongside a road and unable to move. The team rescued him and were determined to do everything in their power to help him recover.

Bonnie was transported back to the shelter in Lviv where the veterinarian discovered his pelvis was crushed and his lumbar vertebrae were severely displaced. It was going to be a long and expensive road to recovery, but rescuers refused to give up.

He will need multiple surgeries to repair the damage and give him the best chance at walking again on his own. The first surgery will fuse together his pelvic bones. The next surgery will involve adding metal pins to alleviate pressure from a hernia that has compressed his spinal cord and gently separating the vertebrae.

With your continued support, Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund will provide grants to cover his medical bills and ongoing care. There are so many animals like Bonnie that need medical care and deserve a second chance.

Help us raise funds and show him that people haven't forgotten about him.

The sweet fella is finally safe and with his fighting spirit will walk on his own again. Both surgeries were a success, but he has a long road of recovery ahead. Help us cover his medical expenses and give him the second chance he deserves.

The shelter is also in need of additional supplies to care for the animals. With winter approaching, they need heaters to keep the animals safe and warm and veterinary supplies to continue to care for all the animals in need.

It could have had a very different outcome. If it were not for the kindness of strangers and a vet who said ‘no’ to euthanasia, this brave stoic little girl named Lucy would not now be embarking on what promises to be the very best years of her life.

February 2023: A frantic message from an animal shelter in Brisbane, Queensland, to me in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. "Can you help us? We have a six-year-old female Airedale, surrendered by an owner who wanted her euthanised."

The reason for surrender? Lucy had taken fright, leapt a fence, and got caught by the hind leg, which twisted and broke at the ankle. She hung upside down until rescued, and then she was taken to the local vet in a very serious condition.

Enter the animal shelter and an immediate transfer to Queensland Veterinary Specialists. Surgery estimate: $3000-plus just to stabilise the joint and assess prognosis, along with a possible amputation. The shelter said, "Go ahead, stabilise the leg. We’ll find the money somehow."

Enter AireNet Australia the following morning, Friday, and a flurry of phone calls and messages, first to agree we would take full responsibility for her, and second to find a Brisbane foster home immediately, to liaise with the hospital and AireNet for the journey ahead. The leg was saved, the foot and ankle joint pinned internally and externally with a metal superstructure that looked like something from outer space, and Lucy was assessed as ready for discharge late on that Friday night.

As always, AireNet people never say no. In a matter of hours, at the end of a very busy Friday, our two foster dads, Nathan and Heath, stepped up. Late that night, they took home brave Lucy. Dressed in a large Elizabethan collar, with colourful vet wrap supporting the extraordinary frame on her foot, she responded with surprising sweetness. Instructions were to keep her quiet, reassured, and as calm as possible.

Thus, from February to October 2023, with the devoted care from her foster dads and backed by funding from AireNet Australia, Lucy embarked on an incredible journey of recovery: Numerous visits to the vet hospital to x-ray and monitor the repair of the joints, ligaments and bones; metal implants both internal and external that amazingly Lucy did not try to detach, uncomfortable though they were; internal infection around the joint that caused considerable concern; and all the while, her happy disposition and love of cuddles sustained her entire team of carers. Every cent of the more than $10,000 that was needed for Lucy could not have been better spent.

Her final visit to her favourite vet, Dr Tim, was in early October. Pronounced healed and good to go, against all odds, Lucy now walks steadily, if a little lopsidedly, adores her foster family and now her very own Mum Judy and Dad Kevin, and has the brightest of futures ahead. While it was a heart-wrenching decision by her foster dads to let her go, they knew it was the right thing to do... and opens the door for another "Lucy" to receive the same love and care sometime soon.

Lucy the Wonder Airedale is very much the poster girl for AireNet Australia. We could not be more proud of her strength and her determination to live and to love every day for the rest of her life. A tale of transformation that makes our hearts sing.

In a heartwarming display of community effort and animal welfare commitment, Sebastian, a husky with striking blue eyes and a distinct black and white coat, was rescued from a sewer drain in Lexington, Kentucky.

This tale of determination and kindness shows the importance of animal care and the unbreakable bond between pets and their owners.

Sebastian's Unexpected Plight
The saga began when Sebastian found himself in a predicament, trapped in a sewer drain. His vocal attempts to escape did not go unnoticed, as concerned residents alerted the authorities.

As the Courier Journal reports, Jai Hamilton from Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control (LFACC) played a pivotal role in the rescue. He and his team worked tirelessly to gain Sebastian's trust, an essential step for a successful rescue.

Hamilton's admiration for Sebastian's beauty was evident as he described the rescue operation.

Sebastian was trapped in a sewer drain in Lexington, Kentucky.

This incident swiftly garnered attention on social media, with LFACC documenting the entire episode. The community's reaction was a mixture of amusement and concern, as many joked about Sebastian's adventurous nature, a common trait in huskies.

At the end of the day, the support from the community was overwhelming.

LFACC workers coaxed him gently from the sewer.

A Glimpse into the Rescue
LFACC's efforts were captured in a touching video. The footage showed Sebastian in the drain, with LFACC workers encouraging him gently to come out. As Storyful. reports, Their patient coaxing, accompanied by kissy noises and soft words, were crucial in ensuring Sebastian's safety and comfort.

This video, shared widely, provided a firsthand look at the dedication and compassion of the LFACC team in their mission to save animals in distress.

Sebastian's owner identified him from the LFACC's video.

Reunion and Reflection
The highlight of this saga was the emotional reunion between Sebastian and his owner.

The LFACC received a call from a man desperately searching for his missing husky. Upon seeing the video, he immediately recognized Sebastian — a joyful end to a tense ordeal.

Hamilton shared the owner's relief and joy.

"He was missing his husky and described Sebastian to a T," Hamilton said. "I sent him the video, and he said, ‘That is 100 percent my dog, Sebastian.'"

Lessons Learned from Sebastian's Adventure
Sebastian's adventure serves as a crucial reminder of the unpredictability of pet ownership and the essential role of animal rescue organizations. It underscores the importance of community involvement in animal welfare and the unyielding spirit of pets.

A blend of suspense and warmth, this rescue story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the compassion of those dedicated to their care. As Sebastian settles back into his life, his story remains an inspiring example of the impact of collective efforts in animal rescue and the enduring bond between pets and their owners.

There are many animal rescues around the world that help abandoned dogs and cats find forever homes. There are also many people who are not organized as animal rescues, but they still save many animals out of love.

Stoyan and Dessy are a young couple in Bulgaria that have a dream of providing homes for many stray cats. They also have a big heart for dogs, and it worked out well for the stray in this story.

In Bulgaria, there are many dogs and cats that are abandoned on the streets. It is common, but those animals suffer every day.

A Puppy Appears
One of those little puppies came up to Stoyan and Dessy when they were waiting outside of the grocery store. It was obvious that he was recently abandoned, and he was very friendly and social.

They wanted to make sure he had a meal, so they left him with a few sausages, but the little puppy had other ideas. He ended up following them across town to their home.

All the way home, he kept looking at them with such a sad look in his eyes. When they arrived at their front door, however, the little puppy was hesitant to enter.

Up until this time in his life, every door had been closed. Little did he know that he was about to get a happy beginning to a forever life.

The Puppy Gets Some Attention
Dessy started preparing food, as the little puppy was very hungry. He was also dirty and needed a bath.

They were surprised by how much water the puppy drank from the shower pan. He must have been very thirsty living on the street.

After giving him a shower, he was wrapped up in a towel and put by the heater to dry. He looked very comfortable in his little bundle.

This little puppy may not be a designer breed, but he has a big heart and deserves to have a happy home. I'm sure that this couple will provide him with everything he needs.

Meet Chewy, one of the most miraculous rehabilitations ever!

When Chewy, a beautiful Saint Bernard, was rescued by The Last Resort Rescue over two years ago, he was totally paralyzed. Upon his arrival at TLR, he had no bladder control from his paralysis, his fur was matted, his hind end was saturated with urine, and his skin was burning red and angry.

Hours were spent getting Chewy cleaned, shaved, and dried, after which he was looking and feeling more comfortable. Once he was fed and relaxed, Chewy’s physical therapy was started... with full support of his caboose to get him up and moving, to get his blood and spinal fluids circulating because at this time, Chewy couldn’t stand and walk on his own.

Let’s now advance two years for Chewy, the paralyzed Saint Bernard who would never walk again!

The good news is that with all his dedicated physical therapy, Chewy is not only walking today, he is running and living his best life. Thanks to those who never gave up him, and his adoptive family and their love of their big handsome boy, Chewy now does have a wonderful life!

When we see dogs that are abandoned or abused, our hearts really go out to them. We want to do what we can to help, but sometimes we are limited in what we are able to do.

Every once in a while, however, we get an opportunity to do something profound, and that was the case with the people in this video. They were driving down the road when they saw something unthinkable, but rather than just standing by, they took action.

A little puppy was thrown from a moving car, and the entire event was caught on a dashcam. The little puppy, not realizing that she was being abandoned, chased after the car and continued to run for a couple of miles.

Drivers that were following the little puppy managed to form a shield so that the dog wouldn't come to harm. After running for a while, the puppy stopped by the roadside, and a crowd of people gathered.

That is when a kindhearted individual saw the puppy and decided to rescue her. He put her in the car, giving her a safe place to rest, and he named her Pelusa.

It wasn't long before the little dog was feeling better. She showed with her incessant joy that life is good, and even though Pelusa had a tragic past, her joy was enough to melt any heart.

It wasn't long before Pelusa was sleeping peacefully. The kind stranger that saved her that day decided to save her again, and she became a member of their family.

This is more than just a reminder that dogs need our help, it's a reminder that we can all do our part to help them.

These are some of the saddest and most shocking stories. We're talking about those poor neglected and abused animals that haven't been brushed or groomed in years to the point of being buried alive by their matted coats. Every few years or so, we'll read about them and pray it's the last time we have to see it happen. It never is.

This time it's a story out of New York's Putnam County, where Chief Ken Ross received a call from a woman to report her neighbor's dog was being neglected. Ross — who's also the founder of the local SPCA — and other officers visited the residence identified in the call and asked the owner if they could see his dog.

Since founding Putnam County's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 2010, Ross is no stranger to mistreated animals. In fact, he's sadly seen hundreds of them during his tenure there. But even he was blown away after seeing the animal which looked nothing like a dog at first glance. If anything, it looked like a Halloween costume for canines resembling something straight out of a sci-fi movie like The Spider that Ate Manhattan.

It turned out there really was a pup under there after all, in the form of a miniature poodle who was buried under more than eight pounds of thickly matted fur! It was so dense it concealed his eyes and most of his face, sprouting from his body at awkward angles like furry tentacles. We've seen roadkill that looked healthier.

"This is probably the worst case that we've ever seen," Ross admitted to The Washington Post.

It didn't take but a moment to recognize this was a case of severe animal cruelty, and officers charged the canine's owner accordingly. They then took the senior dog known as Pierre to Guardian Veterinary Specialists in Brewster, N.Y., where it took three vets more than two hours to remove the urine-and-feces-covered fur from his 13.8-pound frame.

In doing so, they discovered a red collar around the 9-year-old's neck that had been completely overgrown by fur. Afterward, Pierre understandably looked like an entirely different pup.

Is That a Dog?
Jason Berg, founder of the GVS animal hospital, stated that he sees dogs in Pierre's wretched condition only about once every five years. "The pain that these guys are in when your hair is that knotted and matted," Berg said, "it's heartbreaking."

He also noted that Pierre's fur had likely been growing for at least 18 months. In fact, Pierre was experiencing pain when doctors touched his fur, so they decided to sedate him before using clippers and razors to remove the mounds of smelly hair. "Nobody would think it's the same dog," Berg acknowledged.

In addition to the removal of eight pounds of fur, Pierre reportedly had a bladder infection and a cut from the buried collar, according to Berg.

Animal Rescue
Pierre remained in pain for a couple of days and wouldn't eat, but since then he's been inhaling chicken and ambulating normally around the clinic, where he's continued to receive treatment. "You can tell he feels a lot better," said Berg. "I mean, he's still a very cautious dog, so we have to go slow with him because, you know, who knows what he went through?"

The dog's owner is scheduled for an arraignment on August 30 at the Patterson Justice Court. His neighbors claimed they hadn't seen Pierre outside in seven years. Fortunately, the SPCA was put in touch with Poodle Rescue Connecticut, Inc., where Pierre will live until he's adopted.

Meet Mavis, an adorable Cairn Terrier mix who is currently in the care of Cherished Tails Senior Sanctuary in Marana, Arizona. Mavis came to them by way of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. She reportedly had a tough time in the shelter but has settled well into her foster home.

Described as affectionate, gentle, quiet, dignified, a couch potato, and friendly, she is very sweet and loving and likes to cuddle and sleep with her humans. Cherished Tails noted she learned how to use the doggy door very quickly, so it's likely she had used one before.

Mavis, who has been spayed, was provided with extensive dental work at the shelter that was much needed, so she will need wet food for life, as she only has a few teeth left. She is in great spirits, however, and doesn't seem bothered by it.

This sweet little pooch walks well on a leash, but she is also a perfect "carry size" pet, and she also does just fine in a crate, although she has excellent house manners and is completely reliable in the home when left by her lonesome.

Rescue Pets Rule
Mavis is estimated to be around 10 years old and weighs about 9 pounds. She does have some cataracts, as most older dogs do, but she is very peppy/spry for her age and doesn't let it slow her down. One of her best traits, besides being house-trained, is that she is not an excessive barker, which is always a plus. She also gets along with other dogs.

Changing the Life of a Shelter Pet
The shelter has shared with us that Mavis has found her forever home!

Please consider adopting a senior like Mavis. Adopting and fostering saves lives.

Mange can be a serious condition in dogs, especially if left untreated. For those pups with mange who get help, it can take months to recover.

When rescuers with Animal Aid Unlimited in India saw Petey on the streets, they knew they couldn't leave him to suffer any longer.

The rescue shared on YouTube that Petey was an elderly street dog who was covered in scabs and wounds from his mange. Beyond that, he was suffering from a wound on his leg and a severely infected eye.

They wrote, "This poor gentle boy had almost reached the end of his life. With a deep maggot-filled wound on his leg, he could hardly walk. His vision too was blurred by a wound near his eye that was probably caused by scratching. He was starving and even his toes were swollen and tender."

It seemed that Petey knew they were there to help. He let the rescuers with Animal Aid Unlimited take him to their rescue, and from there, he was able to be treated for maggots and infection. They offered him creams and medicated baths, in addition to plenty of nutritious meals.

It took a bit of time, but Petey went from being on the verge of death to settling into his new life with newfound health. The rescue said, "He's not rambunctious or bouncy. Gentle Petey is one of those shining souls who just wants to be a good boy."

A stray puppy in India is finally out of pain thanks to rescuers with Animal Aid Unlimited.

The rescue group shared on YouTube that the tiny puppy, Alvin, was suffering on the streets with an open fracture wound. He would've died without help, so they carefully scooped him up and took him to their center for help.

After examining Alvin's wound, the rescue discovered it was badly infected. They got to work cleaning his fracture wound, along with other minor wounds. They applied a cream to help keep the maggots and flies away, and they bandaged him up.

Alvin wasn't really sure what to think at first. His body was healing, but he was still in some pain. But slowly, he started to regain his strength.

Within a week of being rescued, Alvin was feeling much better and was ready for some play! He was still in recovery, but his spirits were high, and he was ready to run and play and be a puppy!

Eventually, the rescuers were able to allow Alvin the freedom to do just that. His wounds healed, and he was able to run around and play like a puppy should.

An adorable rescue puppy named Bin has defied the odds and lived to adulthood. And he seems to be thriving!

Bin has been living at the Saved Souls Foundation in Kok Ngam, Thailand, since he was born.

The foundation introduced Bin on Instagram, saying:

"Meet Bin. An extraordinary puppy born with a unique disability. We like to think that he has a superpower, like Daredevil or Spiderman. People even like to joke that he stole Naruto running moves! He is an happy and resilient little boy. When a dog is this happy, we should also be happy for him and try to match his witty sense of humor!"

They added that Bin isn't the only disabled dog living at the foundation. They said, "He is one of 60 disabled dogs that our staff and volunteers help every day."

The foundation describes Bin's disability as a birth defect in which his "front legs are reversed a little bit like a penguin."

They wrote, "None of us at the foundation had ever seen a dog like him before. He has been with us since birth. He is loved by everyone!"

They shared on Facebook that he had to undergo surgery to remove two of his legs due to his birth defects. But he's not letting that slow him down!

While the foundation is taking good care of sweet Bin, his life doesn't come without challenges. Because he scoots around on his stomach, he's prone to abrasions and sores.

To help combat this, the foundation offers Bin a sandy floor to move around on so it's softer for him.

Bin is a prime example of what persistence and good spirits can lead to! He may be disabled, but he's living his best life thanks to rescuers at the foundation and his positive outlook on life.

A sweet little dog discovered in a Texas cornfield has been rescued from a life of pain and misery after who knows how long when the South Plains Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) stepped in and came to his aid.

"When I first got the call, these people had found this dog behind their house in a cornfield, and I got a call by my president [Kim Moyers] to go pick this dog up," Tori Houston, a foster mom and volunteer with the South Plains SPCA, told PEOPLE.

"And when I arrived, the condition of this dog was probably the worst I had ever seen in any dog, ever. He had so much hair you didn't know which was the front, which was the back. He was covered in goat heads (stickers). He stunk so bad," she noted. "You couldn't see any part of his body. He looked like a pile of sheep wool."

Referring to him as Matt now (for obvious reasons), Moyers went on to say that his hair growth was about five years of matting!

According to the South Plains SPCA, "Matt went to Ark Hospital for Pets around 7:15 Monday morning with his foster, Tori Houston. Kayla Thurmon, with Kayla's Grooming Service, came to the vet office, and after Matt was sedated, Kayla performed her grooming magic! Matt's total hair shaved off weighed in around 3 lbs. There were thousands of goat head stickers, sticks, grass, and even beetles matted in his fur.

"He has severe bruises on his body from his fur being tight on his skin. Blood work has been done, and he is anemic and on medication. He is heartworm negative and tick-disease-negative. There is NO way ticks and fleas could have crawled through his matted fur. Matt will need a dental once his blood work indicates it's safe. He is also on eye drops several times a day, as his eyes are extremely irritated. After his groom and him waking up, he is such a sweet boy. His age is estimated 6 years old. His care will be lengthy, but he will be up for adoption once he has healed and all vetting done."

Prior to his grooming, one of their Facebook posts also noted that "there was a leash embedded throughout the hair and that led to a collar embedded to the neck. We were able to cut the collar/leash out in segments. If you can, please donate towards the care of this dog." They also added "You can call Ark Hospital for Pets between 7:00 am - 1 pm to donate (806-745-2955), donate via Venmo, or donations can be brought by our facility."

Meet Novak.

He has endured unimaginable cruelty but remains the sweetest boy.

The young chocolate lab was often seen in Colgate, Oklahoma, walking up to the front porch of homes looking for attention, food, and water. He would even approach people on the street for some pats.

A concerned citizen and former rescuer reached out to foster-based rescue, A Lab for Life, for help. The rescue was at max capacity at the time but said they would reach out as soon as there was an opening. They asked the person to keep an eye on the dog and they would be in touch.

Two weeks later, there was an opening so the CEO of A Lab for Life reached out the woman. She said the dog was shot and ran off into the woods. Several volunteers were searching for the dog and a few days later he reappeared in desperate need of medical attention.

The rescue picked up Novak and rushed him to the vet. They told us, "Upon initial examination, Novak was determined to have a fractured jaw and several broken teeth. He also had a rampant infection in his mouth. The vet noted a bullet wound in his side and his face."

The pup was started on IV fluids and went into emergency surgery to remove the bullet that was still lodged in his jaw. This is just the first of several surgeries he will need to repair the extensive damage caused by the bullet.

He remains on antibiotics to clear up the infection and reduce swelling as the rescue contacts specialists to schedule the surgery to remove 7 broken teeth and repair his fractured jaw.

They reached out to Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund for help with his medical bills. The fund helps save the lives of shelter animals in need of medical care and gives them the second chance they deserve.

Novak has a long road of recovery ahead and his foster family will be with him every step of the way. Even though he doesn't feel well enough to play with other dogs, he enjoys being around them and rolling in the grass. He loves belly rubs and carries soft toys around the house. Despite all he has been through, he still trusts humans and want to be around them.

"Novak is a loving, kind and resilient boy who has shown love and affection despite his physical pain and discomfort. At the moment, Novak is not able to eat "normal" dog food and requires "gruel". If this surgery does not take place, Novak will have persistent infections and malnourishment due to his inability to eat," shared the rescue.

Pets receiving critical care facilitated by an Emergency Animal Medical grant may not be eligible for adoption until they have completed their course of treatment. If you would like to inquire about adoption of a specific animal, we strongly encourage you to visit the shelter’s specific website first as that is often the most up to date place to learn about available pets and review the adoption policies and process. Meet Polly.

The eight-month-old Labrador retriever mix should be running and playing like other puppies, but this sweet pup has endured severe neglect which has resulted in a swollen head.

The puppy arrived at Bayou Buddies in Louisiana with an enlarged head due to a deeply embedded collar. She was rushed to the veterinary clinic where the collar was removed, and the deep laceration was cleaned and treated.

She was sent to a foster home to recover and at first her swelling started to subside, and she was on the road to recovery.

Sadly, a month later her head started to swell again. She was rushed back to the vet who told the shelter, "her swelling is due to strangulation from the scar tissue from the embedded collar."

Her best chance at living a normal life is to have multiple surgeries to release the tension on her neck. The surgeries do pose a risk and are costly, but Polly deserves a chance to live a full and happy life.

The shelter reached out to Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund for help. The fund provides grants to animal shelters and rescues to cover medical costs and ongoing care. This fund saves the lives of countless animals, but we couldn't do it without your support.

Despite all the pain, Polly remains a sweet pup who enjoys being around other dogs and cats. Her foster family shared, "Polly loves to cuddle on the couch and gives the gentlest kisses. Once she has healed, she would make anyone the most amazing pet."

Check out Bayou Buddies on Facebook to see all adoptable pets.

Bayou Buddies focuses on rescuing animals in need of medical care or those very young mostly from Iberville Parish Animal Shelter and helps them get the care they need. They are then transported to a partner shelter or fostered until they find a forever home.
