On Thanksgiving, I needed to run to the store to pick up a few things. For some reason, I decided to go a completely different way down a back alley. From a distance, I saw what looked like a tiny stuffed animal. As I got closer, I realized it was actually a small kitten.

She was facedown, covered in ants, and smelled of urine. I picked her up and was surprised to see she was alive. I took her home, cleaned her, and tried to make a comfortable bed for her in our bathroom, as our two other cats were not happy about the new visitor.

I rushed to the pet store to get a bottle, some formula, and food for her. We thought she was a boy, so my sister named her Champ. Not more than a hour or so after I got her home, she began to have violent seizures. They continued throughout the night every few hours. I rushed her to the vet as soon as they opened the next day.

The vet was very discouraging and said we would most likely need to put her to sleep, as the seizures were not letting up. The vet let us know that Champ was actually a girl, but we decided to keep the name anyway.

I continued with antibiotics, and, to all of our surprise, the seizures slowly started to go away. When she was finally seizure-free, I realized her pupils in her eyes didn't move. Sure enough, the vet confirmed that she was blind from all the trauma. For the next couple of weeks, she continued to improve everyday and became the most playful, active kitten I've ever had. Amazingly, her vision started to come back, as well.

Today she is a typical 4-month-old kitten. She loves to play with strings, balls, and our two other cats. She is very good at playing fetch. She has brought so much love and joy to our lives, and I'm so glad we had the opportunity to rescue her. She is truly a Champ!

UPDATE: THIS CAT HAS BEEN ADOPTED 💜

There are many, many cats, more than we would hope, that we see throughout their lives because life can change in an instant. Starting out with The Cat House on the Kings as an adorable kitten who had no safe place to live, she was old enough and weighed enough to get spayed right away and then go up for adoption after spay surgery recovery.
Even though she was as cute as could be, she was available for adoption for the first time during the winter holiday season, which can be a hard time to get adopted. Love found its way for her first adopter the following February, just after Valentine's Day.

She spent seven years with this adoptive family, and in 2016, she got a fox tail in her right eye, requiring the eye to be removed. In 2021, her family had to move out of state and they could not take her with them. Becky was returned to us, as we are grateful to have the opportunity to provide care again for one of our extremely large cat family, versus them being surrendered somewhere that they may not have the best outcome.

Becky was not thrilled to lose her home and her humans, but she did adjust and she was thankfully adopted again after only a couple of months.

Life changed again for Becky when, three years after adopting her, her adopter had to move to a location that wouldn't allow Becky to go with her. We will always be Becky's extended family, just as it is with all of the lives that have passed through our doors. We want the adoptions to be forever, but life doesn't always work like that.

As she was again very un-thrilled to be back at our Adoption Center, our team of caretakers gave Becky extra patience, sweet talk, bribes, calmness, easy going lap time, and TLC to help bring her around. She did seem to really enjoy her purrsonal photo session to show off her gorgeousness and her striking beauty. We know she knows she is stunning! She even did a special wink for one of her "adopt me" photos, so if you like taking cat photos as well as having a cat companion, we have the star for you!

Too cute.

UPDATE: THESE CATS HAVE BEEN ADOPTED 💜

Do you remember Leo and Tabitha’s heartbreaking story? The feline siblings were mauled by stray dogs while living on the streets of Greece which resulted in several deep wounds and serious injuries.
Thankfully, kindhearted people who feed the community cats noticed Leo and Tabitha were missing and went looking for them. They were found in grave condition and rushed to a vet clinic.

Thanks to your generous donations, the sweet felines were able to get the care they needed and have fully recovered.

Their journey to recovery was long. They spent two months with constant care at the vet clinic before they returned to Let’s be S.M.A.R.T. cat sanctuary to continue healing.

Leo and Tabitha have an unbreakable bond and are now looking for a home together. They are adjusting to life as indoor cats and love playing with toys, especially ones with strings.

"We tend to stick together and cuddle with each other. We might come across as a bit shy at first but after 1 minute of sniffing we show our true personalities!! We are super friendly and social," shared by the sanctuary straight from Leo and Tabitha.

They go on to say, "We both loove cuddles and enjoy a good neck scratch! We purr like machines when we are being stroked and we will rub our faces against you to ask for more!"

Sanctuary staff and volunteers are showering the friendly felines with love and attention while they wait for a forever home.

Ontario, Canada is where a tiny kitten was found along the side of the road. It isn't an unusual occurrence, but this little cutie only weighed about 3 ounces.

After being found, she was brought to the Tiny but Mighty Kitten Rescue where they were surprised with how active she was.

Even though the kitten was abandoned along the side of the road at such a young age, she was full of life. Fortunately for her, she found her way to the perfect place.

Melissa, the founder of the rescue, gave her the name Janie. She began providing the care that was needed for this little kitten.

Janie was born with an unusual type of silvery coat that is known as a "fever coat." It typically occurs when the mother is ill when she is pregnant.

It isn't a dangerous situation, but as they grow older, they typically grow into their usual color.

Janie needed to be watched around the clock because she was so tiny. They fed her on a regular basis but they also had to regulate her heat because she couldn't do so on her own.

3 days after being cared for by Melissa, Janie was now gaining weight. She certainly is a fighter!

June is another one of the rescue cats who had come a few weeks before Janie. Melissa had rescued that pregnant cat as a stray.

Fortunately, June was a dedicated mother, and within a few weeks, she provided the needed assistance for Janie.

June kept a close eye on Janie and couldn't wait to give her the love and attention she needed. When Jane was 2 weeks old, she was healthy enough to get out of the incubator and visit her new mom.

“June immediately accepted Janie as her own as soon as I was able to safely introduce them,” Mellissa said in an interview with Love Meow.

June was cuddling and licking Janie and then brought her in with the other kittens. Janie continues to be a part of the family.

Although Janie doesn't nurse from June, she does cuddle with her and the other kittens while they are nursing. She seems particularly fond of Jasmine, who gives her lots of love.

They are little sisters, and although Janie is 2 weeks younger, she is doing her best to keep up with them.

Janie is now over 4 weeks old and is eating solid foods. She has also crossed the 1 pound mark and is becoming an amazing cat. We look forward to hearing more about this adorable kitten that refused to give up.

It was a very dark, hot July night. My son and I had been away most of the day visiting family. Suddenly, a kitten ran out in front of the car. I was certain I ran her over!

I pulled over to move the body out of the road, but there was no kitten! Then we heard the kitten mewing in the grass. She stepped out to see us, crying her heart out.

I picked her up and held her close to my chest. She was purring and crying!

"There there little one. You are safe now," I whispered to her.

I put her in my garage once we were home and gave her food and water. Poor little darling was so hungry and thirsty. I could not take her into the house, as I had a dog. My plan was to take her with me to work and try to find her a home. If not, I'd have to work it out with my dog.

Everyone was so loving to her, but they already had pets. So, while I worked, my coworkers got a box and put a blanket inside it for her. Then a coworker came to me and told me the maintenance guy wanted her. She assured me the kitten would have a good home.

As time went on, I'd ask him how she was doing. He would show me pictures and tell me she was the sweetest cat! He named her Moxie. I am so very grateful I could help this little baby!

It was the summer, and I had just graduated from undergrad and was waiting to start graduate school in August. For the first time in my life, I would be living alone, and I wasn't thrilled by the idea.

I knew which animal I wanted from a rescue group based out of a local pet store. I marched to the store determined to adopt her with my own money. She was gone... adopted an hour before I got there.

Feeling dejected, I sat down in front of the other cages to ponder my next move. I watched a group of kittens running around their cage. A black and tan tabby caught my eye. His name was Junior. I asked the volunteer if I could see him, and she yanked him out of the cage and practically chucked him at me.

He sunk his claws into my shoulder. In that moment, as he clung to me for dear life, I knew he was my cat. I took him home and started to think of a new name for him.

That night while I was asleep, he wrestled an old foam viking hat from my childhood off a shelf and demolished it. I knew his name had to be something Norse. Later that afternoon, he developed an eye infection, cold, and worms, so off to the vet we went. I decided his eye swelling shut was a sign to name him Odin after the Norse god of poetry and war. His nickname was "Old One Eye".

Odin has been my constant companion these five years. He's a giant 15-pounder who loves to chew on foam flip flops and play with dogs. He's more of a lover than a fighter, so I say he's the poetry side of the god.

Odin adores and is adored by my boyfriend and me. One of the things that brought us together was the fact that I had a cat named after the King of the Gods.

After moving in together, my boyfriend and I immediately started thinking about adopting a cat. I looked online at many shelters in the Boston area. One day, I finished work early and I just had this feeling: I needed to go look for a cat right meow! I went to the only shelter that was nearby, downtown.

When I walked in, I was overwhelmed by the energy of care and love. As I was walking among the cages, I noticed this tiny quiet cat. She looked very sad and hopeless. I asked a volunteer about her. Turned out, this baby had been in this shelter for 1.5 months, and she became chronically ill with an upper respiratory infection.

There were bubbles coming out of her nose. She was sneezing and coughing. And my goodness - she was sad and shy. The doctor in the shelter told me that the only cure for her at this point would be a loving home. When I came back later that week with my boyfriend, we looked at many cats; most of them were active, joyful. I said, "Honey, if we don't adopt this sad kitten, no one will. She is very shy and she needs love to bring hope back to her heart."

We adopted her and renamed her Bast - the Ancient Egyptian goddess of cats. No pressure.

After we brought her home, her cold was gone in one week. It took us several months of patience and love to make her trust us enough and to not be afraid of hanging out with people. She is still not a lap cat, but she sits near us and even sometimes sleeps on our bed.

We built many different cat shelves around the house for her to own and to explore. The house is full of cat toys, cat tunnels and unconditional love that we provide to our little goddess. We are doctoral students and we have a lot of books and articles - Bast loves sleeping on them. We believe that's how she absorbs the knowledge of the world.

stray cat with a horribly disfigured face had been living a miserable life, scrounging for food in garbage bins in Istanbul, Turkey. Everyone who saw her just kept walking. They quickly wrote her off because of her ugly appearance.

A seven-year-old girl discovered the sick animal and felt differently than the rest of the people who had ignored her. She saw beyond her disfigured face, and knew she had to do something to save her.

She brought the cat home to her father and begged him to help. The poor cat was extremely emaciated, had a missing ear, could barely open her right eye, and had mites.

The little girl and her father rushed the cat to the vet, where they were able to nurse her back to health. They treated her with proper medication and performed surgery to repair some of her facial deformities.

They named the cat Gulumser, which means “she who always smiles.” The cat is now doing well and has grown inseparable with the little girl who saved her life.

This story just goes to show that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover!

This 6-month-old kitty was taken in by my mother. “Kitty” was living with a lady who has a very short temper. She also has young children, and at the time, my mom was only somewhat acquainted with her. However, she could already tell that something was not right.

On multiple occasions, she had seen this lady’s children pick Kitty up by the tail or drag her around by it, with no one asking them to stop. She had seen the woman hit the cat on the face, and finally, to her shock, she even saw her pick Kitty up and throw her down a flight of stairs...

These violent reactions were provoked by nothing more than simple things any young cat would do, like jumping on a counter, or accidentally knocking something over.

One day, my mom heard that this woman was furious at Kitty for knocking a keepsake off a shelf and breaking it. Knowing the types of punishments Kitty would suffer for this, she did what any compassionate person would want to do: she offered to adopt Kitty. Hours later, Kitty was out of that house an on to a better life.

This weekend, I am babysitting my mom's animals, and I love spending time with Kitty. She has only been out of that house for a few weeks now, but she is already coming out of her shell. I move carefully around her because sudden movements cause her to flinch back as if expecting a slap to the face. Yet, she has started purring around us and no longer hides.

She gets on our laps and plays with her new toys. Kitty is so full of charm, playfulness, and love, I can't imagine how anyone would want to hurt her, let alone any animal. Nevertheless, it makes me so happy knowing that she will never, ever be hit again. Only loved.

Despite the pain she has suffered at the hands of people, she is still willing to give others a chance. If that isn't inspiring, I don't know what is!

Meet Lena.

The 5-month-old kitten was found barely surviving by a volunteer for the Tampa Bay rescue, Rescue Pets of Florida. She arrived with a fractured jaw and was unable to open her mouth to eat.

Lena weighed just 1.8 pounds and the rescue rushed her to the emergency clinic to be examined.

Even though she was in pain and clearly starving, she purred the entire time like she knew she was finally going to get the help she needed.

The rescue shared, “Lena is full of energy and a purr machine! She eats 4 packs of TikiCat mousse a day to survive. She is a really messy eater. But she loves her food.”

Without treatment, her jaw will fuse shut and she will be unable to eat. Lena needs reconstructive oral surgery which will cost over $5,000.

The rescue reached out to Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund to help cover Lena's medical expenses. The fund is able to help shelter pets like Lena thanks to your continued support.

Her prognosis for a full recovery is good. After she recovers from the surgery she will be put up for adoption. "Given how friendly she is, we have no doubt she will be adopted and be an inside only cat once she has recovered."

I catch and release and feed the strays and feral cats in my neighborhood.

One evening as I was getting ready to feed them, I noticed Scar. He was a big fluffy kitty whose eyes were dilated and looked to be larger than normal. As I watched him he seemed okay but I could feel in my belly that something was wrong.

I had to do something about it. My feeling was correct as I noticed the next day at feeding time, Scar was searching for his food that was right in front of him. After that, I talked to my roomie/best friend she agreed that we had to help!

The next day we made our spare bedroom a room for Scar. After we got him in and settled, I took him to my vet, Dr. Barnard. Doc B had confirmed what I thought, glaucoma!! We tried the drops but knew that we would have to make the decision to have his eyes removed.

The time came to have the left eye removed and we knew the right eye would be next. I made the decision to have both done at the same time so that it would be less traumatic for Scar. After the surgery, a year of payments, and 4 years later, we have a happy, healthy, frisky blind kitty who runs the house!

Feels good not to turn a “blind” eye to an animal in need.

This malnourished kitten was dumped along with her siblings outside an overcrowded shelter. Watonga Community Cat Foundation answered the plea for help put out by the shelter.

The frail kittens were not expected to make it through the night – but they did.

The rescue shared with us, "Three months later, we are excited to report that Mary Katherine and her four siblings are happy, healthy kittens."

The good news continued as we were informed that Mary Katherine has found her forever home. She had a rough start to life but is now in a loving home that she shares with another feline. The two are inseparable and both love to play and cuddle.

One day, my daughter went to the local shelter with a friend just to look at the kitties. A woman came in with a scrawny, half-grown kitten in a box and wanted to surrender him because there was “something wrong with this cat.”

The counter person at the shelter lifted him out of the box and placed him on the counter. He was shaking, his head was bobbing, and he had trouble standing. His legs kept sliding out from under him like a newborn calf’s does.

The shelter worker told the woman he was “unadoptable” and would be put down. She gave the woman a paper to fill out. My daughter asked the woman to give the kitten to her instead. “Please, give him to me. My mom will be really mad at me for 10 minutes or so, but that’s all.”

So that is how Ludicrous came to live with us. He has cerebellar hypoplasia, and as he aged, he began to walk better and better. He still has his moments where he has a spasm or falls, and it often sounds like we have a young c**t running through the house with our other cats.

He is a sweet boy who likes to be held and purrs sweet nothings into my ear. He loves sunbeams, tuna fish, and treats. He is now 12 years old.

While on the internet one day, I found an ad for a girl giving away kittens for free. I went to investigate.

This little kitten had two siblings, both fluffy and adorable and spoken for. She, on the other hand, walked and wobbled funny and was matted and pathetic-looking. And, of course, when I sat down and held my hand out, she came right to me, mewled, curled up in my hand, and tried to purr. I was told if I wanted her I could just take her. The mother cat had stopped feeding them and she couldn't afford food. So I tucked her into the pocket of my hoodie and brought the poor thing home.

It didn't take me long to get her cleaned up and to discover that she had ear mites, fleas and worms. But a bath and a vet appointment helped get that in order, and also let me know she was too young to be eating wet food and should still be bottle fed. Because of her funky colours and personality, I named her Shimiko, which roughly translates to "painted girl/child" in Japanese.

I hand fed her a week or so after that, before transitioning her to wet food and litter training her myself. (Not without enduring accidents. Oops!) But because of this, she was my baby and my best friend... and perpetual gaming buddy! Whenever I was at my computer, which was a lot, she was in my lap purring away or watching. She loved belly rubs and was a piggy with food, her favourites being pizza and chicken. (Watch your food!)

I had her for six long and wonderful years, until one day she just laid down on the bath mat and couldn't get back up. She wouldn't eat and only drank bits at a time. I rushed her to the vet and was told it was liver failure and there was nothing they could do. I pet her and cried as I said goodbye to the best friend I ever had. RIP my lovely Shimiko.

Spot, an 11-year-old cat, was dropped off at the Lichfield and Tamworth Branch of Cats Protection in England. The battered senior was extremely skinny, with dirty fur, rotting teeth, and ears so infected they’d swollen twice their normal size. Rescuers could tell this poor senior cat had spent most of his life on the streets.

But this rescue organization — despite being fully run by volunteers — wasn’t about to let this old cat suffer in silence. After sharing Spot’s story around the community, rescuers had raised more than $2,300 to give the cat a full-feline makeover featuring dental work, neutering, vaccinations, a microchip — even plastic surgery.

When the makeover was complete, everybody was amazed by Spot’s sudden transformation from battered stray to beautiful cat. The cat's teeth were fixed, and his battered ears were neatly reconstructed. It was the feline version of a Cinderella story.

"We would like to once again thank all those generous people...[they] really made all the difference," said rescuer Sue Hocknell, recalling Spot as “aesthetically challenged” kitty before this makeover changed his life.

But sadly, rescuers couldn't erase all of the scars from Spot's former life. The severity of the animal's injuries meant doctors could keep the cat from going deaf while operating on his ears. Even so, Spot is happier and healthier than ever before. Now he spends his days showering everyone around him gratitude and love while he patiently waits for somebody to adopt him.

“Spot loves people and company and is happy to be with you all the time,” rescuers wrote. “He is very affectionate and will be on your knee for cuddles the minute you sit down. Spot would love to be the only pet in the household so he gets all of the fuss and attention.”
