Urban Animal is getting the word out about our Worker Cooperative! Thanks to for the Q & A with our Founder and CEO, Dr. Cherri Trusheim.

Leading with optimism, Dr. Trusheim has created a path for her company to one day be completely employee owned and governed. Her goal is to change the veterinary care industry for the benefit of its workers, clients, and pets.

The collaboration has been working together over the last three years to help provide access to veterinary care. With a tireless commitment to achieve this mission, Urban Animal wants to continue spreading the word about the significant need of helping pets get the care they need.

During WA Gives, a generous donor has provided a match to incentivize other donors to support Doney Coe’s mission. Can you help get Doney Coe over the finish line? PLEASE SCAN THE QR CODE and donate. There are 5️⃣ days left in the campaign and any support you’re able to give is great appreciated!

Meet Taylor and her Chihuahua, Tasha, who have helped behind the scenes at our White Center practice for almost six years. With no prior veterinary experience and after years of hard work and grit, Taylor is now a Lead Veterinary Technician after earning her LVT in 2023. “I wouldn’t have been able to make it through vet tech school without the support of Urban – they worked with my schedule, supported me and cheered me on. I think Urban is a really amazing place for people who want to grow and learn a lot. If you tell them what your goal is, they are going to help you get there. I truly would not be where I am today if I had started at a different clinic.”

Taylor is also a member of the Urban Animal’s Early Adopters Committee (EAC). As a group, the EAC is learning the fundamentals of the inner workings of the worker cooperative including finance and governance to help educate other employees on the co-op model. “I’m really looking forward to being a part of the worker cooperative, and optimistic about the impact it will have on not only our team but the industry as a whole,” said Taylor.

Thanks for all you do, Taylor!

The Seattle Times highlighted Doney Coe Pet Clinic and the amazing work they’ve done over the past 38 years helping pets from under resourced families. Urban Animal is the only veterinary practice in the city supporting Doney Coe’s mission. By supporting their purpose, Urban Animal offers an innovative way for our employees to help all dogs and cats in our community, by giving their time and energy to those who might not otherwise receive care.

There’s no other way to describe it - All Staff meetings at Urban Animal are awesome!

On the heels of this week’s press in April issue regarding our worker cooperative, Urban’s team got together for our semi-annual All Staff meeting earlier this month. The Early Adopters Committee (EAC) headlined the gathering to share what they’ve been learning about building a worker cooperative. Sharing this knowledge is crucial to inform and develop training so other employees learn what it means to join the worker co-op. The EAC talked about governance, bylaws, financial insights, and next steps.

Urban Animal is proud to be building the largest worker cooperative in the nation and equally proud of all the hard work the EAC has put in since October. Stay tuned for more updates on how it’s going!

Thank you for covering the development of Urban Animal’s veterinary worker cooperative! As founder Dr. Cherri Trusheim says so perfectly in the article, “I think veterinary medicine is a great place in our country’s economy to take a step in shrinking that wealth gap and sharing the resources with the people that do the work.”

Urban Animal recognizes it’s not common for a general practice to have a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist on staff. We are super fortunate to have Polly Peterson, DVM, DACVIM helping Urban Animal patients and others around the city with cases who require additional expertise.

Polly’s knowledge is a huge value add and bonus to everyone at Urban Animal – fellow veterinary professionals, clients and our patients! When asked what she loves about working at Urban she said, “I like how our teams collaborate to support the patients above all else, and provide options that fit the whole package, including the patient’s needs, budget, and client preference. I’m also excited that Urban is doing something about the philosophical concerns that many of us have had for a long time about the direction of veterinary medicine. I’m hopeful the worker cooperative inspires others, and just being able to try it out means so much to me.”

Thank you, Polly, for all that you do!

04/12/2024

You may have heard about the recent Parvovirus outbreak in Renton. Urban Animal wanted to share our recommendations for the Parvo vaccination (commonly referred to as DAPP, DAPPv, DAPP2).

All puppies should receive DAPP starting at 8 weeks, then receive a DAPP booster every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age to ensure immunity. The vaccine should then be repeated at 1 year, and then every 3 years thereafter. There is no scientific evidence that vaccinating annually after 1 year has any further benefit to immunity.

If you are not sure if your dog is up to date on DAPP, you can access your pet’s records on Urban Animal’s website under Services -> Existing Clients. If your dog’s vaccines need updating, we can help you at any of our three locations (walk-in at Capitol Hill and White Center and by appointment only at Downtown)!

We’re passionate about offering affordable and accessible care to all in our community. It’s been almost a year since we launched the Affordable Care Together (ACT) initiative, an opportunity for clients to join us in our pursuit of keeping veterinary care affordable. Not just for you, but for everyone within our community.

The ACT initiative adds an additional 15% to all services and products and although it is optional, we hope those who can, will keep it on their invoices. And if 15% is too much at the time of your visit, but you still want to give something, ask one of our team members to help designate that amount. Urban is confident even with the ACT initiative, our care is comparably priced or less than other area practices.

Thank you for helping us support the amazing Seattle community!

Amazing, thank you AAHA for covering Urban Animal’s development of the largest veterinary worker cooperative in the nation! We love this part, “Trusheim believes avoiding corporatization and the influence of private equity can help keep the cost of care more affordable. There is a disconnect between vet med and the corporate consolidators and private equity, and it’s killing us,” says Trusheim. Read more at aaha.com.

Team member spotlight! Meet Brandon, Gigi, and Penelope, who have worked for Urban Animal for three years.

Brandon is our newest Assistant Manager at the White Center location. While no two days (or two hours!) ever look the same, Brandon thrives in our fast-paced environment. When asked why he works at Urban he said, “This has been a very kind, wonderful place to work, I just love it here. I’ve worked at a few other veterinary practices, but this has been the best as far as culture, growth opportunities, and the people are amazing. Everything Cherri (Urban’s founder) has talked about doing with a worker cooperative is coming true, and it’s exciting to be a part of. It feels like this is bigger than us, but it’s for all of us.”

Fun fact: Brandon has a pair of rat paw prints on his neck and has owned pet rats since he was 12. Thank you for all that you do, Brandon!
