Comfort Edition | Defining Comfort

Urban Animal has been teasing the arrival of our newest ancillary service and the wait is nearly over. Say hello to Comfort Animal, Urban Animal’s support system for clients who are navigating their pet’s chronic conditions and/or end of life journey.

Through the last years of her beloved heart-dog, Izzy’s, life, Mollyrose Dumm began feeling Anticipatory Grief — a type of grief experienced prior to an actual loss — and decided to learn all she could about end-of-life support for pet owners and caregivers. A passion project for Mollyrose, Comfort Animal is the ultimate culmination of her professional experience in veterinary ER/ICU client support, as a liaison between medical staff and clients, and as a lifelong animal lover. As a certified Animal Hospice & Palliative Care Practitioner and Companion Animal End of Life Doula, Mollyrose is excited about bringing Comfort Animal to others.

A pet’s end-of-life journey can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be unmanageable. You may wonder: How will I know when it’s time to say goodbye? How can I be sure s/he’ll have a good death? Have I been a good caregiver? It’s imperative for your veterinary team to be involved in end-of-life decision making, but having a dedicated person to explore the emotionality behind these decisions can offer additional comfort during this transition. Mollyrose, through Comfort Animal services, wants to be this person for you.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for the official launch of Comfort Animal and how to schedule time with Mollyrose.

With just a few hours before 2025 arrives and as we prepare to embrace the opportunities before us, we want to remember the dearly beloved dogs and cats you said goodbye to in 2024. We know that the cherished memories you shared with your pets will live forever but recognize with new beginnings means a feeling of leaving the past behind. While there is a lot from 2024 we might be happy to say “see you never again”, when there is a death to process, the New Year can be hard.

Comfort Edition | New Year Resolutions

With a new year in sight no doubt your social media is bursting with holiday recipes, places to visit with (and without) snow, and those good ol’ New Year tropes – New Year’s Resolutions. Urban Animal wants to spin on this concept and encourage considering a different kind of list – the Canine/Feline End of Life Bucket List.

If you are facing saying goodbye to your beloved companion, their quality of life is likely on your mind often. Have you thought about the things your pet loves to do (or eat!) and the people and animals they love to be around?  In place of the tired resolution list recommended by the “influencer of the moment,” this can be a great time to start planning for your best friend’s next phase in their journey.

In her last few years of life, Izzy, pictured above, enjoyed her life to the fullest within the confines of her medical diagnoses and dog-mom’s finances. She basked in the sunshine, played in the water, and even ate a whole birthday cake (discuss any food related bucket list items with your vet first)!

Need help navigating end of life matters for your pet? Stay tuned as Urban Animal prepares to launch Comfort Animal in the New Year. We can even help you plan a “Best Day Ever” – working around limitations of you and your pet to savor the true wonders of being alive together.

Comfort Edition | Seasons Change

In a recent post, Urban Animal shared some insight around grieving through the holidays. Thanksgiving and the fall/winter holidays come with many expectations and the passage of time. You might be able to ignore the dates on the calendar, but the physical manifestations – the changing leaves, snow falling, and travel plans – are not as easy avoid.

Why does that matter? A loved one isn’t there. Life and time continue while their absence is ever present. This can lead to feelings such as isolation, sadness and injustice or plainly put, it’s downright sh*tty. When it seems everyone around is filled with holiday cheer, the loss you feel may magnify or intensify.

Finding ways to include your lost loved one (including your beloved pets) during the season, can help normalize your grief and lighten the load. Make their favorite holiday treat! Donate in their honor! Wish them a happy holiday outloud and let them know you’re thinking about them. We promise, you’re not alone and keeping those bonds alive is thought to help make grief feel a little lighter.

Finding resources that help support your grief can be key to navigating it. In case you missed it last time, here is a list we love from What’s Your Grief, a website dedicated to supporting grievers, other grief supporters and educators: 64 Reminders if You’re Filled with Holiday Dread (https://whatsyourgrief.com/holiday-dread/).

Oh, the holidays. Feeling agitated or anxious about the pending onslaught of merriment? The holidays are not a straightforward time of year for many people, most of all those who may be grieving the loss of a beloved animal. You’re not alone.

Grief is difficult any time of year, but the holidays can intensify the feeling – especially when the holiday is focused on being grateful. “What could I possibly be grateful for when my furry friend is gone?”

What can I do? If your family or friend group decides to do a “what am I thankful for” prior to eating dinner this year you could propose instead to share “what am I thankful for that I learned from my pet?” This is an easy way to incorporate your missed companion into the holidays after they’re gone, as well as invite a way to share your grief with your loved ones.

Finding resources that help support your grief can also be a key to navigating it. Here is a list we love from What’s Your Grief, a website dedicated to supporting grievers, other grief supporters and educators: 64 Reminders if You’re Filled with Holiday Dread (https://whatsyourgrief.com/holiday-dread/)

Urban Animal had the privilege of sitting down to speak with Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal last week.

Cherri Trusheim, DVM, Founder/CEO and Joseph Coury, CFO had the amazing opportunity to meet with Congresswoman Jayapal to discuss the negative impacts of private equity in Veterinary Medicine.

Urban Animal is building the nation’s largest Worker Cooperative in the veterinary industry and shared the important groundwork being done at the company and why this movement is vital for the betterment of the industry.

Thank you Congresswoman Jayapal for your time!

Another great Pacific Northwest Veterinary Conference in the books! Thanks to all who helped out and showed up. We love any excuse for an Urban Animal get together, and hosted a fun meet-n-greet social hour for our crew and prospective new employees.

We have a lot of work to do still to push the Worker Cooperative message to make a better working environment for veterinary professionals. COME JOIN OUR WORKER COOPERATIVE!

As the Summer Games of the Olympics come to a close, it seems apropos we show off the handsome Nesta, who Urban’s fab Travel Animal team helped make their way (and their owner) to France earlier this year. Neither one of them may have won the 100m hurdles, completed a series of back handsprings or half twists, or broke any Olympic records, but they sure worked hard to earn as many “souvenirs fantastiques” a trip to the City of Light and beyond can create! Life’s medals - 🥇 🥈 🥉
