Congratulations to our August 2024 Dog of the Month, Sir! Here is his acceptance speech:

I’m Sir Marshal, the Rhodesian Ridgeback. I was born in Canada with the name “Marshal” because I have a star marking on my chest like a fire marshal’s badge. “Sir” became my first name and we kept my original name as my middle name. I’m called “Marsh-Mellow” because I love to sleep 95% of the day like most Ridgebacks. The other 5% however, I’m rewarded the nickname “Sir-Marshal-Mayhem” and you’d understand if you’ve seen or heard me sprint and pronk about the yard or park. I have been known to bark at my own reflection in admiration for myself. I gain more confidence when I have mastered a new trick especially when I’m in a Zoom Room obedience class with my mom. Whether it’s a short walk to the mailbox or an adventurous hike in the forest, I love being with my family.

We at Zoom Room Seattle are strong believers in the power of positive reinforcement dog training. Why?

1. Desirable behaviors that are rewarded are repeated.
2. Undesirable behaviors that are ignored fade away through a process called extinction, while desirable replacement behaviors are taught.
3. It is never necessary to use force, punishment, or intimidation to teach a living being to learn a new behavior or change an old behavior.
4. Balanced training methods and the use of aversive training tools temporarily suppresses rather than fixes behavior and often inhibits learning and causes long-term training consequences that we must work to undo.

If you are curious about positive reinforcement dog training and how to teach and effect behavioral change, we’d love to welcome you to our gym!

Congratulations to our June 2024 Dog of the Month, Lincoln! Here is his acceptance speech:

I am an energetic 7 year old flat-coated retriever born in Olympia, WA. I did puppy classes at the Seattle Zoom Room when I was little and am now enjoying agility classes. I love running around on all the equipment, going as fast as I can through the tunnel and making as much noise as possible going over the teeter totter. The only problem is that they let my handler come along and he is pretty slow and always wants me to do things in a different way than I do. I know that it’s okay to skip a jump to do the dog walk and that you waste valuable time if you go through all of the weave poles but my handler has treats so I humor him and do it his way, sometimes.

In my spare time, I work with King County Search Dogs and my favorite thing is racing through forests and mountains using my nose to locate people. I then go find my slow handler and bring him to the person to get my reward toy. I have regional and national certifications in airscent (working off lead to find lost people) and human remains detection so I sometimes help police at crime scenes. I am on call 24/7 365 days a year and have responded to almost 100 search missions all over Western Washington. In 2022, the AKC gave me a national award for finding lost people with dementia. I received a nice medallion but they won’t let me chew it, hehe. 🐾

Congratulations to our May 2024 Dog of the Month, Rowena! Here is her acceptance speech:

Well hello, my name is Rowena Ravenclaw MacLeod. That’s right, my humans named me after two very intelligent fictional witches, and I do my very best to live up to their expectations. I cannot promise I am always the bestest girl on the block but I am fully chaotic good.

I am an almost 3 year old mystery black mix, my humans like to play guess the breed when people ask but in truth, I’m just a happy black kinda long, kinda short, kinda blocky doggo. They scooped me up from the Camano Island Shelter back in Jan 2022. No one really knows how I got there or how long I was in the shelter system but I’m glad they found me! I have some baggage so people call me dog reactive, I have some dog friends I just don’t think I need more.

Zoom Room has given me a safe place to practice my agility skills without being worried about what other doggos might think about me. Agility lets me burn off some energy, learn new skills, and show how brave I can be. My human tries her best to keep up, I am much faster than her, lucky for her I’m very considerate and slow down so she doesn’t get left behind.

As the weather warms up, I’m excited to start swimming again and getting to go on quiet hikes and camping trips! If you see me around I love people and will give you lots of kisses, just give me some space if you have your pup with you… it’s not them, it’s me 😊

Congratulations to our April 2024 Dog of the Month, Dash! Here’s his acceptance speech:

Hi Friends! What an honor to be nominated as I always try my best to be a good boy. I am a white Boxer and almost 2 years old. I was born in Shelton WA and came to live with my family at 9 weeks old. I’ve been coming to Zoom Room since July 2022. I started in Puppy Obedience and now my favorite class is Agility. I love Agility because if I complete the course correctly, I get cheese!

I am happy go lucky, love to play, have boundless energy and will never miss an opportunity to say hi to every person and every dog. I enjoy long walks and look forward to them daily especially when we go someplace new. I also get to run with my people for extra exercise and am even named after a local race, The Dawg Dash. The farthest I’ve run so far is 8 miles and I wasn’t even tired afterwards! I am looking forward to summer where I like to play frisbee in the backyard and sunbathe on my bed. This is one of my favorite pastimes, especially when my people are outside with me.
