Every 2nd and 4th Saturday you can find us at Inca's Secret in Kent 11-4pm. Why keep up on the maintenance on the nails and beak?

Our feathered friends would naturally groom their own beak and nails in the wild; however, once we bring them in the house it lessens their ability and then the responsibility falls upon us. The typical small parrot should be groomed every 1-2 months, whereas a larger parrot can go about 2-3 months before taken once again. A parrot's nails are used as extra grip when perching and eating so if it b

ecomes overgrown the chances of snagging, self-harm, scratches on the family and, in the worst cases, broken or missing appendages become an imminent danger. Same goes with a beak, if it is allowed to be overgrown then the parrot can experience a difficulty eating, be prone to bacterial infections, misalignment of the mandibles, and/or self harm or harm to loved ones. Sir W***y's Avian Grooming is here to help you keep your little ones safe, happy and healthy! With years of experience in small-large hook bill and soft bill care, maintenance, nutrition, and grooming; we strive to keep a safe, clean, and educational environment at all times. Each grooming appointment comes with the option of a beak trim, nail trim, and wing clip (to the discretion of the owner), as well as a basic checkup and feedback on any observations made. Consultation times may also be scheduled for any questions you may have in addition to, or replacement of a grooming appointment. Both groomers, Jess and Daniel, have been trained via a well-known exotic bird shop in Southern California and know how to handle mis-aligned mandibles (scissor beak), assess certain illnesses through a physical check, and give aid to small injuries. IN-STORE PRICES:
Prices vary depending on the size of the bird,
"The works" - all three (wings, beak, and nails)
"a-La Carte"- any 1 or 2 of the three options will be priced out individually
**The a la carte prices are only available at Inca's Secret on Saturday during grooming hours. **

Some birds love to flirt after a little TLC, I just never thought Cheyanne would be one of them 😍.

This beautiful girl has a drastic scissor beak and unfortunately had traumatic experiences in the past that ended in a broken wing and extreme fear response when it came to grooming. When we first met her we knew we needed to take a different approach to make her as comfortable as possible considering how much maintenance her specific beak condition will require for the rest of her life. We worked with her momma on how to incorporate towel time into their daily routine, eliminating a HUGE source of stress in the grooming process thus giving us more time in the towel to work on the beak. Over the last two years we have gotten Cheyanne’s grooming experience to be one that ends in her coming back for flirts and kisses with the groomer! She leaves the towel with out a single pant or sign of anxiety (although she is still very vocal during grooming, the pitch isn’t fearful and her vitals show she’s not experiencing anything near to the amount of fear and stress she used to). I don’t think she will ever LIKE grooming, but I am so happy to see her in a more comfortable place than ever before. It’s all thanks for the hard work and dedication her mom has put in with her.

Check out these smiles 😍 These two haven’t been together for too long but boy has their bond grown!

Ft ✨Sam✨ the Moluccan Cockatoo who has unfortunately sustained a few injuries to the beak and right foot somewhere along life’s journey. Luckily none of this gets in Sam’s way, especially when it comes to stealing snuggles from Dad🖤

(Sam’s injury resulted in unrestricted growth of the bottom mandible. Although the injury was years ago, this growth can cause friction and grinding to the old injury site resulting in reopening of the wound and potential for further damage/infection. What does this mean?

Sam requires constant management in order to maintain the proper length that allows Sam the ability to eat while allowing that wound to heal long term. Luckily that means we get to see these two quite often 🖤!)

Before and After Beak Grooming
on this handsome Blue and Gold Macaw! The tip of his beak tends to grow a bit too long leaving him open to possible injury if he were to fall on the tip. After a little TLC ( nail and beak trim) he was feeling handsome as ever and ready to shred some wood toys 🖤

✨Grey Grip✨

Not many see this but as a groomer it’s definitely a thing! Not all, but many African Grey Parrots know this trick: they ball up their toes and never let go with an almost unbelievable strength. Because they are so smart and why would they want to help the groomer?! 😂 I have a super secret trick to getting past this and I bet you can’t guess what it is!

Some of you may remember ET, the Blue Fronted Amazon, from some of our previous posts. Unfortunately her person passed away last year leaving her in foster care while we looked for her new forever home. Although she had solely bonded with women previously, she found her place with Matt and his family almost immediately! ~7 months later and now she’s stepping up to everyone, chatting along with the whole family and thriving in her new home! 😍

We couldn’t have asked for a better placement for ET!

Here is the rest of the last preening session! When his beak gets too long he doesn’t preen as much because it’s more difficult. At grooming time, we freshen up his beak and help him with a little bit of the back work 🖤 This is the best view of what a blood feather looks like, it’s not too pink but the tackiness gives it away! They can be tender so be gentle when working in areas where there are blood feathers 🖤 listen to your birds communication style and you’ll have a happy preening session! When dad’s nails are too short to get these tiny pin feathers the groomers will happily step in and help 😍 Because let’s be real, those TINY nare pins are hard to get to! But there are tiny blood feathers in the area that can be a bit tender so when you are preening your bird, watch out for the pink ones and only preen the crunchy white ones! Amazon parrot tail feather preening! This cutie used to have a flockmate that would preen these feathers but unfortunately they are no longer together so pin feathers go unpreened. I removed the dried keratin sheath but left the base of the feather to continue forming ( it’s still in a tender blood feather phase and should not be shed[tacky feeling or pink hue to it]). Worst part of my job: the groomers can sometimes be seen as the bad guy but at Sir Willy’s, we try really hard not to be. Some birds are simply not interested and that’s okay! But we make sure to spend a little extra on the ones that are open to forming a relationship and being a little derpy before and after grooming by doing something that they enjoy (singing, dancing, cuddling, talking, etc). That extra time matters to them and keeps the stress much lower for both the parrot and parront (not to mention the grooming process itself goes so much smoother). Look at this boy, he knows why we are at his house. He knows grooming is coming yet he is totally relaxed and happy. Parrots are smart, treating them like an individual goes a long way when working with these Dinos. Ft ✨Kaiser the Hybrid Macaw✨ (If you peep his leg at the end you will see that it is malformed. He’s a disabled boy who needs a little extra care, but has the sweetest heart and can be just as spicy as any other parrot!
