Something my mom told me years ago, and I've found it to be true. Raising dogs and kids is the same. They both need patience, routine, dont set them up for failure, and teach them. Not just train, but teach. Your dog will learn faster then a human toddler, but only if you teach them. The more teaching and work you put into your puppy, the better the adult dog. Dont fail your puppy. Show them the world, teach them it's ok, they will be afraid of everything if you don't teach and show them it's ok. You wanted them, it's your responsibility to do right by them. I start the day they come home. Our first learning besides the word no, is to look at me. Everytime we make eye contact puppy gets a treat. And I mean everytime. I keep a pocket of kibble as treats, we go thru a lot to get the desired result of my dog always watching me. When puppy starts to wander on a leash and makes eye contact, i give treat and call name but i have them square in front of me to get that treat. When off leash puppy only gets treat when they come to me and get in front of me with that eye contact. I dont turn to look at them, I call their name until they get in front of me. This will help start the foundation of trust and recall later. Don't get frustrated with them, be patient, teach them.its not going to happen in one day, but keep at it.
