🌟 1: Control & consent! Give your cat control & consent over their own bodies. Research shows that the more space we give our cats the more likely they are to approach us for interactions. Further, research states that when we allow cats to start a physical interaction with us, that interaction lasts much longer versus if we start the interaction. Cats desperately want us to be predictable with our movements. If we don’t give them predictability they are on high alert as they don’t know what to expect. Don’t pick them up, don’t force hold them, or force interactions.
🌟 2: Play with your cat every day! You have welcomed a fierce predator into your home & if you don’t provide an outlet for your cats to hunt, then they will likely attack & bite, you, other cats, & other animals. A cat who is not being played with daily is a sad, frustrated, & unfulfilled cat. Their playtime is their self-care. A cat’s entire life is hunt, kill, eat, groom, sleep. We have stolen hunting from them, we need to replace it. Providing play is a confidence booster, stress reducer, & a way to bond with your cat! Play first, then a meal or snack.
🌟 3: High value treats & wet food! Positive reinforcement using high value treats or wet food is vital, whether you are teaching your cat a new skill or simply reinforcing behaviors you want to see more of, using this high value reward makes positive associations with you & your cat.
🌟 4: Elevated surfaces! Cats need to be up high because they see their world vertically. We want cats to be up high because a cat on an elevated surface is going to be more confident & a cat that is more confident is going to be a cat that is going to be more likely to trust you.
🌟 5: Routine & schedule! Cats thrive in consistency & they desperately need to be able to predict their day. If a cat is not able to predict their day they feel a lot of uncertainty, stress, anxiety, & frustration. You should be feeding them (at least 5x a day), playing with them, cleaning their litter boxes, & offering enrichment around the same times every day. Remember, you are the one who controls their environment & they rely on you to be consistent.
