URGENT: OUT OF DOG SPACE

As of this morning, August 15, BARCS has 13 more dogs in the shelter than we have kennel space to house them. And, dogs will continue to come into BARCS throughout the day.

BARCS is the open-admission shelter for Baltimore City. This means we cannot turn new animals away, even if our shelter is already full. We are understaffed, underfunded, and the number of dogs coming into our shelter has significantly increased in the last year. We have hundreds of healthy, happy adoptable dogs that need homes. If these animals are not moved—whether to a foster home, rescue organization or a loving home—then they are at risk for euthanasia.

Please help us not have to make any heartbreaking decisions by helping us spread the word about this mounting crisis. Below are BARCS’ immediate calls to action starting today, Thursday, August 15.

ADOPT: Adoption fees are waived for all animals in our shelter located at 2490 Giles Road, Baltimore, MD 21225. Fees are waived for the entire month of August, but please do not delay. Animals must start leaving immediately. https://www.barcs.org/adopt-dogs

FOSTER: We urgently need foster families for large adult dogs. Any open cage means two lives preserved: the dog you took home to foster and the next one inevitably coming in tomorrow. Even a weekend-long commitment to foster can make a major difference. Please walk into our shelter to pick out a dog to take home temporarily. https://www.barcs.org/foster

RESCUE: Rescue partners are needed to pull animals from the shelter. If you are an existing partner, please reach out to help. If you are a rescue but not an existing partner, please contact [email protected] to fill out an application.

LOST AND FOUND: If you find a lost pet, hold onto it–don’t bring it to the shelter–and help look for the owners. A majority of lost pets are found within a few blocks of their homes. Notify the shelter and follow these steps on our website: https://www.barcs.org/found-pets

In order to save the lives of the animals still coming in above our capacity, we need to call on you–our community–to foster, adopt and help us make room for the overflow of animals we continue to get. We do not have the funding, kennel space or resources to save lives under these current circumstances without our community's support.

PLEASE WE REALLY NEED YOUR SHARES....
15 pound Juliet has been waiting now for over 8 months for her family to find her-she is super sweet and loving, a cuddler to people, dogs and cats. We can't know what life was like for Juliet before she arrived to make her careful with trusting but she is likely to be timid for just a few days once adopted, for this reason, we are hoping for a fenced yard and another dog (she takes comfort in being around another dog). It doesn't take long and she becomes just the best girl. Housebroken, playful and an all around fun dog.

* UPDATE from Gus’ foster: Gus' adoption fell through today. If anyone else is interested, please submit an app for him! Hes been with me in foster for 5 months and he really needs a home to call his own! He loves car rides but hates having to go back to the rescue every few days. Today was not his fault, he was the best boy. The existing dog just was not a fan of having to share her humans with Gus.

Gus is still waiting for his forever home. He's a 2 yr old hound. Come visit him at the shelter you won't regret it.
