Welcome to Tobie Urban Farm!
My name is Jordan Smith. I am a classically trained Chef and a farmer (or Market Gardener, to be exact). Having studied and worked in food service for over six years, I kept revisiting the title phrase I heard repeatedly over the course of my career, by an esteemed culinarian Chef Jose Andres, who coined the phrase, “Grow Food, Not Lawns.”
In the spring of 2017, I began to look into the concepts of Urban Market Gardening, seeing as I lived within the city limits of Senatobia, Mississippi; a town only 35 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. I had always envisioned living sustainably, a life where I could directly provide for myself without the daily grind required to live in today’s society. Having had a small garden every year or so, from a window planter, barrel to a square yard backyard garden, I’ve had an ongoing fascination with growing food.
During this time, I discovered a man named Curtis Stone, an urban farmer in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. He, among others, have pioneered the concept of small, profitable farming from the perspective of a business, rather than a way of life - and that really spoke to me. Feeling inspired, I became a sponge - soaking up all the information regarding urban agriculture, permaculture & market gardening. Feeling emboldened by his success and the successes of those around the world who ascribe to the principles and mentorship by Mr. Stone, I felt the stirrings of the idea to replicate that very thing in my own life and community.
