Please please be aware of scammers! If it sounds to good like you just won the lottery it’s most likely a scam. I’m working on something to share and it is my opinion, just an opinion.

Why should I pay top dollar for a Maine C**n?

Not all breeders charge the same prices for their Maine c***s. The price can be determined by location and all the expenses they put into
their litter. Some breeders will only feed their cats top-quality foods and ensure they get the best medical care. Therefore, they will factor those extra efforts into their cost. If you are paying top dollar for a Maine C**n hopefully you have been doing your research and connected with a reputable breeder. The first thing that you
should be asking about is if the lines have been tested and can you see proof of the testing. Maine C**ns can be prone to:

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Polycystic Kidney Disease

Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Erythrocyte Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency

These are genetic issues that a reputable breeder is checking for and making sure they do not exist in their lines. These issues shorten the life of the cat and cost a lot of money in veterinary bills to have diagnosed and treated, if treatable. As a result of good breeding these diseases can be avoided but the breeder must test the lines.

High-Quality Food

Maine C**n Cats eat a lot! High quality food is recommended Maine C**ns will not flourish on low quality food with tons of fillers. They need a very high protein diet. There are brands of food that make special Maine C**n mixes. Cats are prone to dehydration so it is always good to give them extra hydration wherever you can sneak it in, they should be on wet food not just kibble. A lot of Maine C**n enthusiast feed a source of raw to their cats. When you are breeding the Queens need to be on an all you can eat diet. They basically can and will eat up to 3 times their normal capacity during pregnancy and through nursing. YOU want this for the best quality kittens, so the breeder has that budgeted in.

Beauty

Color and pattern can play a massive price-determining role. For example, your more common colors and patterns may cost less than some of the rarer colors like silver or smokes. First and foremost, a Maine C**ns conformation should be addressed. To ensure top quality Maine C**ns have a breed standard they should be being bred too. A reputable breeder knows their cats are meeting these standards because they are showing and certifying that their cats are meeting these standards. In the Maine C**n standard, it is stated that a Maine C**n
should be well balanced. That means that they are not being bred to an extreme to enhance a certain feature. Often when certain features are super enhanced it is due to inbreeding which can enhance genetic deficiencies such as the ones listed above. Showing the cat to ensure that they are meeting the standards and to see how it cat is holding up in it’s breed is an entire other level of expenses but should be done and it will be reflected in the price of a quality kitten.

Medical and Veterinarian

Besides the special diseases mentioned previously every Maine C**n must have all the regular check ups any cat would have, in a breeding program there are even more vet bills and precautions to think of. As a breeder not only do the cats need annual visits to the vet but they should be being health checked before and after each breeding. When I bring a new cat into my cattery, I run a panel with the vet detailing any respiratory issues, f***l issues, and blood pathogens. This panel runs about $250.00 per panel (in my area). Believe it or not it is cheaper to run this panel and still quarantine any new additions to the cattery than have your cattery get sick because of negligence. Of course, nobody would purposely infect your cattery they just might not know there is something wrong with the cat, so I strongly recommend testing before exposing preexisting animals to new animals. There are common plasmas that cats can carry and it’s not a big deal if you’ve done the test, medicate the cat, and protect all the other cats.

This is not a comprehensive list of Maine C**n expenses this is only stating why a person would pay top dollar for a Maine C**n. There are obviously a lot of other expenses that involve owning a pet and that should be taken into consideration before the purchase of any pet. I would always suggest a budget be planned out. No 2 owners care for their pets the exact same way so create a plane that works for you.
